This was part of Awesome Ladies III, and it really is awesome, and powerful. There is a wonderful resonant quality to elaineofshallot's voice that draws you in and makes you want to listen. This performance has a brilliant rhythm to it and the whole package is suitably theatrical. The ending with the descent into Lady Macbeth's madness is particularly compelling, and I remember sitting in a little shellshocked silence for a few seconds the first time I listened to it.

Like FJ earlier in the week, I wanted to remix this but I ended up not having enough time to do something as interesting as I wanted. But here is my repod, and perhaps a remix will come later.

The REC: Over the last little bit, I've been working my way through reena_jenkins's Three Times A Week, For A Year. It's a marvelous anthology filled with great wee podfics that fill the gaps in my day to perfection. And there is one podfic in particular that I just loved to pieces. It's of paperclipbitch's Trade Negotiations, a Frozen/Brave crossover Elsa/Merida drabble.

I love listening to Reena read Disney femslash. There is something about the way Reena reads that is just so full of the charm and lightness and enthusiasm that adds this marvelous element of glee to the Disney ladies. Trade Negotiations is no different. It's a stolen moment filled with all Elsa's reserve and Merida's frustrated "now-now-now" enthusiasm and I finished it just wishing there were about 3 more hours of it. Delightfully voiced, it's a complete gem.

Recs in Merlin, MCU, OUaT, Hockey RPF, Disney Princesses, and Agent Carter

Girls & Horses read by cantarina Fandom: Merlin Characters/Pairing: Elena/Mithian Rating: General Audiences Length: 00:03:40 Author: sophinisba Summary: Elena's fourteen and she's never met a girl who loves horses as much as she does.

My Feelings of Love: I love this podfic so much.  I often reach for Cantarina's podfics when I need something quick (which is most of the time), because she is a master of making me have ALL the feelings in something short and sweet.  

This is podfic of my faves because there is something in this slightly breathless way she reads it that so perfectly captures the the joy and wonder of having a first crush and being on the verge of adulthood and breaking away from expectations.  The story itself, is charming and sweet, but to hear Cantarina read it adds this level of racing through all those emotions I remember having when I was not really a child and not really an adult.  It's beauty and nostaliga and wonder and joy, all wrapped up in 3 minutes and 40 seconds.  If you need a boost between meetings at work, or a little something to pick you up before heading to bed, listen to this!

a perception of sweethearts passing through read by analise010 and exmanhater Fandom: MCU (Avengers) Characters/Pairing: Maria Hill/Natasha Romanov Rating: Explicit Length: 00:20:32 Author: thingswithwings Summary: Maria touches her forehead to the cool rough sheets, spreads her legs, and closes her eyes tight.

My Feelings of Love: I so enjoy both analise010's and exmanhater's podfics, so one that has both of their voices in my ear made me dance with joy.  And on a purely technical side, it's very well edited, so that the back and forth between the two are well-paced and the same volume, which can be tricky business.  I also really liked the way they split up the text, swapping the narration at roughly the halfway point, while maintaining the same voicing for the characters.  

On a non-technical level.  I just love this podfic.  I love the story, which has two strong female characters who know what they want and get it from each other with clear and open communication.  It's kinky and smoking hot and I love the way both analise010 and exmanhater performed their roles -- with exmanhater's cool Natasha and analise010's Maria, who is letting go of her control.  They are both rock steady in their reading in a way that really lets the prose build in intensity at its own pace.  Just marvelous!

Lasagna read by Tarae Fandom: Once Upon a Time Characters/Pairing: Regina Mills/Emma Swan Rating: General Audiences Length: 00:07:20 Author: museless22 Summary: When she discovered lasagna, it felt like a stroke of luck and genius. It was simple enough she was hard put to screw it up and there was so much that could be done with it; Make it with meat, make it without, make it with different types of cheeses, add different spices. It became a game to see how many different combinations she could make and if Henry ever noticed how limited their diet was he was kind enough not to say.

My Feelings of Love: Tarae was actually my introduction to Once Upon a Time fandom, and I couldn't have asked for a better tour guide.  Her voice is so warm and flexible and easy to listen to.  It's one of those voices that I just want to wrap myself up in it and bask.  

This podfic is just so...delightful!  It's a little window into the world of Regina, shortly after her arrival in this strange new world, learning to cook.  It's the juxtaposition of magic and technology and how technology is kind of magical, in and of itself.  I cannot help but smile when I listen to it, especially during the little throw-away mention of Regina mowing down every mailbox in town when she tried driving for the first time.  

Tarae reads it with such warmth and affection.  And I love the way Regina's determination to DO THE THING (whatever that thing might be) comes through loud and clear.  And I love the way Tarae's voice lifts with excitement and enthusiasm with the discovery of lasagna.  Each section is bracketed by the perfect music that rounds out the whole experience.  It makes me feel warm and smile.  Every. Single. Time.

Icing the Cake read by knight_tracer Fandom: Hockey RPF Characters/Pairing: Amanda Kessel/Hilary Knight Rating: Teen and Up Audiences Length: 00:12:56 Author: thenorthface Summary: Amanda Kessel is standing in the tiny waiting area of her store, perfect blonde hair cascading past her shoulders and a loose fitting Gophers Hockey shirt on.

"Hi," Hilary breathes out, heart skipping a beat. Amanda Kessel is in her store. Very belatedly she remembers to add, "Welcome to Icing the Cake. What can I get for you today?"

My Feelings of Love: This podfic is practically effervescent.  It's true that I have an open affection for podfics that revolve around food, and specifically, the preparation of food for the people we love.  I come back to it again and again and again (see rec for Lasagna above).  I am drawn to these stories like nothing else, because for me, the preparation of food for a loved one is fundamental.  

So, yeah, I was predisposed to love this podfic from the get-go.  And then I started listening and, seriously, I absolutely enchanted.  From the moment Knight_Tracer made the sound of Amanda Kessel walking into the bakery, I was transported. The way Knight_Tracer reads Amanda in this podfic never fails to blow me away -- that longing of an athlete who is deep in training and sees a red velvet cake and knows that it's verboten, but RED VELVET CAKE.  Add to that, the marvelous way Hillary's crush comes out and the first blush of a budding relationship, and what you get is this fabulous concoction that's not unlike the baked goods knight_tracer is reading about -- light, fluffy, sweet, and indulgent.

Four Things that Weren't Adequately Covered in Mulan's R.A. Training read by analise010 Fandom: Disney Princesses Characters/Pairing: Fa Mulan, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Tiana (Princess and the Frog), Rapunzel (Tangled), Belle (Beauty and the Beast 1991), Merida (Brave), Cinderella (Cinderella 1950), Jasmine (Aladdin) Rating: General Audiences Length: 00:29:37 Author: NaomiK Summary: Mulan is a Resident Assistant on a dormitory floor at a college. Gosh, some of the students on her floor come from really screwed-up families.

My Feelings of Love: Happiness is the Disney Ladies being Awesome and Competent in a Univeristy AU.  #thatisall (except not, because I am wordy).  I think one of the reasons I love this podfic so much is that Analise010 just embodies the voice of the female college student, while still creating subtle differences between the characters.  She just gets all the drama and.. bigness... of college, and dealing with parents, and choosing a major.  Also, her world-weary why-do-I-have-to-deal-with-this-sh!t Mulan is pitch perfect.  

This is a story of friendship and women having each others' backs and growing up and is just plain awesome.  The Disney Princesses and their stories are slyly updated for a College AU (Aurora has narcolepsy, Tiana works a 40 hour week on top of classes, Mulan is in college after enlisting, and Belle is the queen of Googling things).  The dialog is sparkly and (as always) analise010 excels at delivering it.  It's a sparkly gem of a feel-good podfic that always makes me happy.

frontlines, heartlines read by rhea314 Fandom: Agent Carter Characters/Pairing: Peggy Carter/Angie Martinelli Rating: General Audiences Length: 00:16:37 Author: toboldlywrite Summary: Peggy Carter is a bundle of knives shaped like a woman, and that's what Angie likes best about her

My Feelings of Love: This is pretty much everything I want from a Peggy/Angie podfic.  Part of it is the story.  It is exactly as I would see a relationship between Peggy and Angie developing.  The characterization is awesome and it feels very... true... to characters and the time period.  I have a special fondness for friends-turned-lovers and the kind of stories that really show that increasing warmth and affection.  

Rhea314 takes this and runs with it.  Her performance is so graceful and steady and easy-to-listen to -- clear and crisp and clean and beautifully paced.  Her performance of Angie, in particular, has just the right amount of sass and flirtation and gets at the sense of fun matter-of-factness that underlies that character. The whole comes together in such a satisfying, warm, affectionate way.  Listening to this podfic made me want to watch all the Agent Carter episodes all over again, because surely this story was in there, and I just missed it the first time.

A fest celebrating podfics about under-represented genders

ABOUT

Things will happen in this fest! And they will be awesome. On April 18, sign-up announcements will go up simultaneously on Dreamwidth and on Tumblr.  Announcements will also be given a signal boost on Twitter.

(re) is a two-pronged challenge celebrating existing podfics about characters who have under-represented genders or sexes (or for characters with no gender at all - but more on how we define the idea later). Participants can sign up for Week One or for Week Two, or if they’re really ambitious, both.

Week One (May 18-22), is all about the straight rec: think podfic-love, think rec sets, think amplirecathon. Week Two (25-29) is the same, but with a twist. You’ll only rec one podfic at a time but you’ll also be repodding or remixing it. We’re not setting a lot of rules on what we mean by “remix” but it has to have a both a storytelling element and an audio element (but not necessarily words). You can check out fire_juggler’s post for some ideas about how a podfic might be remixed, but don’t feel limited to it. Leave a comment, send an ask, or email us with any questions!

Because remixing podfic is a new thing, we understand that permissions are tricky.  We ask all of you to hold to your fandoms’ etiquette about permissions.

WHAT ARE “UNDER-REPRESENTED GENDERS AND SEXES?” We mean any character of any gender that tends not to get a lot of play in fandom. The list includes, but is not limited to characters who are: trans women, agender, genderqueer, demigender, genderfluid, trans men, cis women, bigender, trigender, pangender, two-spirit, intersex. (Hat tip to the rarelywritten community for coining “underrepresented genders and sexes”. We couldn’t top it.)

Please know that we don’t require that the character identify as one of these genders or sexes in canon, just that they do so in the story. Check out  exmanhater’s meta on “Rule 63 and femslash within fandom” for more on why we’re allowing Rule 63.
