A serial killer dubbed “A.B.C.” is picking their victims in alphabetical order; an Ascher in Andover, a Barnard in Bexhill, etc. An ABC Railway Guide is left at each crime scene. The killer is taunting Poirot with disturbing letters, announcing where the next murder will be.

Poirot knows the key to solving the mystery lies in Bob who witnessed the murderer at work.
