I get why Itsuki Koizumi is so sycophantic towards Haruhi, considering he has a built in end-of-the-world thermometer guided by her shifts in mood. But man, it’s never not been hard to watch for me. I wish that they could be normal friends.

Watching Haruhi converse with Koizumi is like watching a friend try to strike up a conversation with Chat GPT. Koizumi is constantly trying to keep Haruhi complacent and man it really slows down their progression, for both characters, individually and together. A lot of people say they hate Haruhi, but I think what they really hate is the situation and circumstances she’s in that would naturally bring out the worst that any person has to offer. Koizumi struggles to be a normal person with friends because his job is all-encompassing and constantly life-threatening. Haruhi is given endless green lights to treat people in ways no one should be able to because the alternative presents disastrous consequences for the universe, and she’s not even allowed to know as much. The fact that these two manage to develop at all in these circumstances is honestly quite the feat so I really try to be patient with them, but damn.

One of these days I really want Haruhi to just be visibly over Koizumi’s placating tactics. As she starts to value true friendships I hope she pushes him further (although Koizumi might see this coming, he has a card up every sleeve) see i have a headache again.
