I can’t believe I let animation snobs on youtube put me off to Pickle and Peanut.

I think it’s one of the best examples of a kids’ cartoon. Visually it’s a lot of fun, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it’s cynical enough to be funny without being mean spirited, and it doesn’t rely on toilet humor or the writer’s deep seeded traumas pertaining to their daddy issues and their weird relationship with their sexuality.

imo the best way to interpret those “real people don’t do x” writing advice posts is “most people don’t do x, so if a character does x, it should be a distinguishing trait.” human behavior is infinitely varied; for any x, there are real people who do x. we can’t make absolute statements. we can, however, make probabilistic ones.

for example, most people don’t address each other by name in the middle of a casual conversation. if all your characters do that, your dialogue will sound stilted and unnatural. but if just one character does that, then it tells us something about that character.

Honestly, I don’t think the marriage between Shawn and Katy would last unless Katy learns to stop being afraid Maya’s feelings. She doesn’t communicate with, supervise, or discipline her child and Maya consistently has had to rely on the Matthews for what Katy should have been doing from the beginning.

I really don’t think that Shawn would put up with that unless Katy really turned herself around in that regard. He would always want to be in Maya’s life, but the marriage would not survive if he were the only one having to be the ‘bad guy’ when needed. He and Cory are the poster children for gentle parenting- which I absolutely love for them, truly, but Shawn especially doesn’t strike me as someone who can easily bring himself to Lay Down The Law like Topanga can when needed.

Shawn, with all the crap he experienced growing up, is like the opposite of the kind of person who struggles with aggression after a shitty childhood. He’s such a sensitive, good hearted character and I think it would wear him down being the only one to pull Maya back from the ledge when she does what all kids do, especially kids with her disposition, which is doing something Really Stupid. The minute he finds out that little girl is wandering around New York at night without a curfew? And that Katy knew about it? Yeah, that’s a serious discussion.
