@redcanyon
They were pretty far out now and it was getting darker out but Mac hadn’t noticed as he drove, not that it bother him too much. He was used to be venturing in these canyons for as long as he could remember. The dark couldn’t make him afraid of doing so, not when it was him everyone else should be afraid of this late.
“I know my way in and out of these things. After been doing it since a child, I like to think of it as a second home.” And it was, more of a place he could hide out with whatever business he was getting himself into. No one wanted to bother him out here, alone, but that wasn’t something he wanted to get into with Kiele. There was no point in it, really. “You won’t get lost out here.”
And of course, with all the warnings given to her, Mac was certain she would be on edge around him. Could he even describe what was told to her and let her know if it was true or not? There was no reason to scare her off yet.
She sat in the silence and couldn’t help thinking that all she’d been told was true. Mac wasn’t bothering to tell her none of it could hold water, so what was she to believe? She appreciated the fact he bothered at all to reassure her when it came to getting lost out there but she couldn’t help the sudden uneasiness that bubbled in her stomach. It was a feeling that told her she might not be making it back from those canyons after all…
Soon enough the truck slowed and pulled to the side of a dark spot in the rock face. It could have been a cave but she just couldn’t tell through the inky blackness. Mac’s headlights on the truck were illuminating the scrub brush just in front of them and perpendicular to the dark shadows, casting more of their own. “This it?” Her voice was tentative.
"There's not much of a view of the canyons with it being dark and all but if you go beyond this way, you can find the entrance of the caves..." He was sure she wouldn't be comfortable going out farther than they were now. "It's not too bad and if you want, I think I have a flashlight or two sitting in the back of the truck somewhere..."
The closet thing to loss he had experience was his mother walking out on them all those years ago but when he thought about it, it was no great loss. He never really saw her around when she was in his life; it was like he barely knew her. It didn’t matter, though, because he thought he turned out alright, according to his father.
“That must’ve been something. He was so young…” He drove them deeper into the canyon, watching her relaxed reaction from time to time and wondered if she was always this way. But she didn’t know that much about him, whether or not his reputation around town was awful and could spread like wildfire. Maybe that was a good thing to count on in this case.
She nodded, looking at him periodically. “It was…somethin’. Nobody took it well, least o’ all me.” She hadn’t been paying any real attention to where they’d been going. She looked out the windows and had a fleeting second thought about this. It was so dark out there…
“Ya do know where we’re goin’ right? ‘Course ya do, ya probably know everythin’ ‘bout these canyons.” Thoughts came back to her about all the men warning her about Mac, warning her about what a monster he was, how he got women alone and ravaged them. Harley has said they’d all wished for death when Mac was through, that it would have been better to be dead and gone than have to have him inside of them, violating them. She spoke before her brain could catch up with her mouth. “Mac, I’ve heard a lot of people say some really…horrible…things about ya. That’s why I wanna know ‘bout ya, from your own words; I don’t wanna believe anythin’ o’ what they tell me as gospel ‘til ya can tell me your side o’ things…”

She pursed her lips and looked out the windshield. She wished if he was what they all said he was that he’d just be honest with her; Kiele wasn’t easily frightened. “Anythin’ ya wanna tell me is alright.” She watched him out of the corner of her eyes, hoping he’d open up or even reveal a morsel of anything about himself to her.
As the seconds dragged on and he didn’t say anything else she sighed mentally and broke the silence herself. “I lived in Oklahoma for a long time; was born there in a small town. Like I said earlier, everybody knew me and I just had to get out. I wanted to make my own way and my own life without everybody judgin’ me.” She blinked and noticed her hands were in her lap and her fingers were picking at each other. “Mama and Daddy were always on me to be somethin’ grand and special, somethin’ more’n I turned out. I had a little brother but he died when he turned three…freak accident.”
They were getting deeper and deeper into the canyon and it was getting so much darker than she had anticipated. Oddly enough, she felt safer in this truck with this man who’d been accused of so much than she had in a long time.
The closet thing to loss he had experience was his mother walking out on them all those years ago but when he thought about it, it was no great loss. He never really saw her around when she was in his life; it was like he barely knew her. It didn't matter, though, because he thought he turned out alright, according to his father.

But she didn't know that much about him, whether or not his reputation around town was awful and could spread like wildfire. Maybe that was a good thing to count on in this case.
Kiele swallowed silently, looking over at him; her decision was made up for her when Mac glanced at her from the corner of his eyes. She moved across the seat and pressed against him, slipping the arm over the back of the seat around her shoulders. “You’re awful brave, bringin’ me out here at this time o’ night…” She smiled a bit and offered him the benefit of the doubt.
She was hoping as they drove further and further into the desert that he would prove all of those people wrong, who’d said he was dangerous, scum, and what-not. Mac wasn’t giving her those vibes yet but one could only surmise at this early date in their…what were they exactly? Were they friends? What? “Tell me ‘bout yourself…while we’re drivin’…?” She surprised herself as much as she surprised him by asking that. He wasn’t the kind of man to talk about himself was he?
Mac paused for a moment, keeping his eyes on the road, before speaking up. "There's nothing to tell, really." He worked most of the day up in a cave cooking meth and half of the other time, he spent with a bottle whisky or holding obsessions...He was always looking for something. And he wasn't so sure any of this would appeal to Kiele. He was positive it would only prove Harley right which was something he didn't want to do. "I don't do much other than make my own hours." What could he say that was remotely interesting?
Kiele hadn’t said anything about his move on her and she wasn’t going to. She’d said she made her own decisions about people and she would do that with Mac. He didn’t seem all that bad from the things she’d seen so far…
She was facing him now and her eyes, hazel with a golden tint, were looking at him with expectancy. She wasn’t begging for trouble or anything like that but she could see where…maybe people were wrong about him. “Where ya wanna go? My place? Yours? S’pose we could hit the trails and explore the canyons a bit…ain’t never been out there yet…”
Mac was certain taking Kiele to his place wasn’t the smartest idea, seeing as it was practically a dump and the idea of going to hers seemed interesting, but the suggestion of the canyons sparked his interest almost instantly. “Well, I suppose you’ll need someone who can lead you around the canyons. Wouldn’t want you getting lost when it’s getting dark out.” Between them, everything seemed calm but he wasn’t sure he could let his guard down.
She nodded and smiled. “That’d be nice. Thanks.” She felt at ease in his presence but she wasn’t sure if it would last that long. The moment they were alone in the middle of nowhere in the desert things could change…
She waited for him to make it to his truck and followed. “I would need a guide, you’re right. I don’t wanna get lost either…” She climbed up in his truck and sat on the bench seat, waiting as he climbed in and rolled the engine over. She sat awkwardly, not sure if she should scoot close to him or keep her distance.
The truck roared to life and in no time, they were driving off to their destination. "Especially, this late out..." Being out in the middle of nowhere alone wasn't safe and when it got dark out, it was even worse. Of course, anyone in Caineville would say you're better off venturing out alone than with Mac but that was a different story.
He couldn't help but see how awkward she looked sitting there. He wouldn't be uncomfortable if she wanted to stay a good amount of space away from him, that was to be expected some way or the other.
Kiele hadn’t said anything about his move on her and she wasn’t going to. She’d said she made her own decisions about people and she would do that with Mac. He didn’t seem all that bad from the things she’d seen so far…

Kiele nodded and took another pull off of her beer. “Good. So what are ya up to?” She was getting bored now, just sitting there in the bar as the people stared at them out of the corners of their eyes. “Did ya wanna go somewhere? Ya know, if ya ain’t doin’ anythin’?” She cocked her head to the side and grabbed his hand, lacing her fingers with his.
She felt his rough palms against her soft ones and a thrill was sent through her belly. She hadn’t felt this feeling, these emotions, since a lifetime ago; at least it seemed like it. Her stomach flipped when he started to move with her.
Mac found himself caught off guard by her sudden movement but quickly adjusted, her hand brushing against his as she laced their fingers. Her skin felt soft and nice and smooth. Normally, he wasn’t one for this kind of thing but wouldn’t object to the action. When was the last time he had been near a woman like this? Months ago? It felt like forever to him.
“There’s nowhere I need to be.” And he meant it. He was liking where everything was heading, and hadn’t expected to have gotten her attention so easily.
She moved with him, leading him effortlessly to the door, seeing that Rick and Harley and pretty much everyone else was watching them leave together. She smiled a bit, waiting for Mac to come even with her and pressing her side close to his, his arm brushing her breast. Kiele was sure he’d noticed that because it sure as Hell hadn’t escaped her notice, but she didn’t make note of it aloud. She continued walking with him until they’d made it outside into the parking lot and looked over at him. “Now what?”
If people were staring at him leaving with her, he didn't care about it at all. There was no point in wasting his time caring what others thought about him or the things he did and as for Rick, he hoped it would make him boil with jealousy. The only thing that he did care about was the thought of having her alone out here...without all those noisy townspeople. He was surprised she hadn't said anything about his move on her.
Kiele nodded and took another pull off of her beer. “Good. So what are ya up to?” She was getting bored now, just sitting there in the bar as the people stared at them out of the corners of their eyes. “Did ya wanna go somewhere? "There's nowhere I need to be." And he meant it. He was liking where everything was heading, and hadn't expected to have gotten her attention so easily.
She caught what he did there, with his inflection, the stress he put on the word “bad.” She knew she should have been more scared, more hesitant about this strange man, but she just couldn’t bring herself to be. She was in a public bar with a bunch of other people around, wasn’t she? He couldn’t get rough with her or do anything with all these other people around…could he? “Yeah…I hear ya. I lived in a small town ‘fore this, all my life really.”
She supposed with that admonition she had to tell him why she’d choose to come to another small town when she’d just gotten out of one. “Yeah, I’m new here. I’m far from home, yeah…had to get somewhere that nobody knew me, couldn’t judge me…” She paused and looked behind Mac. She had been giving him most of her attention until she caught a movement behind him. A man with long flowing red hair and piercings and tattoos everywhere was standing behind him.
“Who’s the tart with the nice tits, Mac?” the strange man asked before learing at her over Mac’s shoulder.
Mac’s jaw clenched as he set his glass down on the counter before throwing it at someone and whirled around to face the man who was interrupting his good time. “No one you know.” He wasn’t in the mood to start an argument or even a fight for that matter. His mind was set on Kiele and Kiele only tonight.
“I don’t see why it matters to you, Rick.” He said this with bitter and annoyance. Harley he could tolerate but Rick was a completely different story. He couldn’t stand Rick, really. The greasy hick knew the other man had his eyes set on his obsession and in his eyes, there would be no need for a competition.
Kiele smiled a bit, a sheepish smirk that would have told Mac, if he’d been looking at her, that she thought his gruff reply was appreciated. “Rick, is it?” She spoke, her voice firm. “I don’t know ya in the slightest but ya can see I’m talkin’ to Mac here. Any friend o’ Mac’s is a friend o’ mine but all I want right now is to talk to him…thanks.” She added the latter part when Rick’s mouth shut and he grunted in disapproval, turning around and leaving them alone.
It took a couple seconds for Mac to turn back around and face her but when he did, finally, she smiled and leaned into him; she spoke quietly so only he could hear her. “Hope that wasn’t too forward, to tell him off…” She took a pull on her beer and rolled her eyes a bit. “He looks like a real creep to me.” In an essence she was emphasizing the fact that she found Mac to be more normal than Rick, more attractive and certainly less creepy.
Mac watched in amusement as Rick backed off, hiding a smile of victory and smirked when he watched Kiele lean into him. "I don't think it'll hurt his feelings, if he has any, that is..." To be honest, he couldn't care less about him...at least as long as he was barging in where he wasn't supposed to be at. "But he can deal with it. He's a big man, after all."
She caught what he did there, with his inflection, the stress he put on the word “bad.” She knew she should have been more scared, more hesitant about this strange man, but she just couldn’t bring herself to be. Kiele noticed he looked almost amused, in a wry way, that she was holding his gaze, smiling at him; he must be the man Harley spoke of because if he wasn’t he wouldn’t, most likely, be expecting her fear. She finished her steak, the only time she broke eyes contact from him, and pushed her plate away from her. Walter brought her another beer to replace the one she’d downed with her meal; slipping from her stool, she closed the distance between herself and the stranger and clinked her drink with his. “Cheers. Name’s Kiele…I’m new ‘round here. Who might ya be?”
She was friendly, that much he could tell, but was unsure if she really meant it or the young woman was trying to see what he was all about but regardless, he was glad for the approach. If things hadn’t turned out this way, Mac would have took the liberty and stalked over to her first. ‘Isn’t this interesting?’ He thought to himself before taking a sip of the drink in his hand and looked her over once without being detected. “The name’s Mac…”
“Mac…nice to meet ya, Mac.” She offered him her petite hand, delicate and fragile looking as dainty as any woman. She didn’t expect him to take her hand but was surprised when he did. According to Harley, this man loved control, that’s all it was about for him; this didn’t seem to be the case right now. Perhaps he was just going with the flow, seeing what could come of this new girl in town as she spent time around him against her better judgment.
His eyes were dark blue, mischief and danger making them darker, deeper; Kiele didn’t know this man but she was starting to see where Harley might have a point about him. He didn’t smile very much, at least to where he could show his teeth, which made Kiele believe he might have something to hide. Whatever that was, the tight-lipped smiles were creepy and eerie and gave the impression he was being sardonic about any amusement he felt…
She shook his hand, noticing his grip tightened ever so slightly on her hand. She pulled back and their hands slipped apart; her smile faultered ever so slightly. “Everyone seems to know everybody else ‘round here…” She said by way of acknowledging she’d heard about him already; she’d heard what he was capable of. “Ya havin’ a good night so far? You’re my first acquaintance besides Walter…least that I made an effort to say hey to.” She looked him over once, from face to feet and then back up. “Want some company?”
He shoved the thought of Harley warning Kiele about him to the back of his mind, focusing all of his attention on her. "I guess you could say that. Sometimes it can be a good thing...or bad." He meant to emphasize on the word 'bad' but thought it might be in bad taste if he scared her right away.
"So...you're new in town, huh?" He asked, rocking the glass in his hand back and forth. "We don't get many new people around here that much...better places to see, I guess. You must be far from home." There was hardly anything good at this place but he supposed locating to somewhere else was pointless. Caineville was his home.
If things hadn't turned out this way, Mac would have took the liberty and stalked over to her first. 'Isn't this interesting?' He thought to himself before taking a sip of the drink in his hand and looked her over once without being detected. "The name's Mac..."
Her mouth watered at she stared at the steak she’d just ordered; Kiele could practically hear the thing moo softly as it sat on the plate before her. She cut into it and it melted like butter when she got it in her mouth. “Fuck…” She swore softly. It was so good.
It took her while to notice some of the men in the place were staring at her, but when she did notice she didn’t play it off. “What? Ya got somethin’ ya wanna tell me? What do I got some left in my teeth or…?” None of the men responded, instead turning back to the bar or wherever they’d been facing before looking her way. It irritated her and she sat back in her seat, looking around, almost daring anyone else to look at her.
A few minutes later a young deputy with the Sheriff’s department came down from the bar and tipped his hat to her. “Good eve-evenin’ ma’am.” He stuttered when he spoke. “M-my name is Harley and I-I was just goin’ t-to tell ya that there’s a man in these parts…w-well he frequents this h-here establishment and I just wan-want ya to be safe.”
Kiele smiled at the young man and blinked before answering. “Is that what none o’ them yellow bellies could dare to tell me?” Harley nodded and Kiele smiled wider. “Well thank ya, honey. I’ll definitely watch out for him. What’s he look like?”
Just then, the doors of the Luna Mesa opened and boots scuffed along the flooring…
The cigarette crunched under his boot as he turned to enter the Luna Mesa, pushing the doors open with force. Most of the guys in the place didn’t bother to acknowledge him and Mac smirked at this. In a way, he didn’t want their attention except for one person and he was sure it would happen soon.
His boots dragged across the hardwood flooring as he made his way inside, eyes searching around, hopefully he would be able to spot the pretty woman he saw outside just to have a better look at her. And he’d be able to have a drink while it went on. Oh, wouldn’t that be great?
Kiele looked around as all the talking died down. She noticed the man from outside had just walked in; she smiled a bit. This was no doubt the man everyone was concerned about, what the deputy named Harley was about to describe to her. “That him?” She jerked her head over at the surly looking hick with greasy hair and dirty beat up overalls on. When Harley nodded she stuck another piece of steak in her mouth and chewed. “I’m sorry if I seem less’n surprised by your warnin’…bein’ he looks like trouble, but I like to make up my own mind ‘bout people. Thanks.”
Harley left her side with a nod of his head, touching the brim of his hat and soon she was alone, looking over at this man. She didn’t know him and she knew she should be afraid but she couldn’t shake the understanding that settled within her. He looked like life had done a real number on him and she knew how that felt. It wasn’t long before he noticed her; this time, instead of looking away, she smiled, her eyes locked with his.
He leaned against the bar counter, waiting for his drink to be made, when something caught his eye and soon found himself no longer interested in that drink he ordered. There she was, sitting there with her food, and right where he had seen Harley trying to talk to her about something. Harley could mean well but he was always getting in his way. It was annoying.
When he saw the deputy walking away and felt her alone, he grew happy but didn't smile back when she turned to smile back at him. He wondered what it was that didn't make her dart her glaze down at the table, away from him? Was she afraid of him like most people were? Soon, his drink came and he grabbed it without breaking eye contact.
Her mouth watered at she stared at the steak she’d just ordered; Kiele could practically hear the thing moo softly as it sat on the plate before her. She cut into it and it melted like butter when she got it in her mouth. “Fuck…” She swore softly. It was so good.

Kiele arrived in town a few days ago, making short work of moving her things into the small cabin out of the way in the middle of nowhere, just on the outskirts of town. Today was the first day she’d gotten a chance to assess things outside of the home.
She shoved her keys in the pocket of her short shorts, having just arrived at the Luna Mesa, a little bar and grill that also had lodging in a building across the street. The owner, Walter, had helped her get the little cabin home she now laid her head at night and at first glance, he was an okay guy. Of course, she couldn’t know that for sure…
She looked across the parking lot and noticed a beat up red truck, the owner standing leaning against it, surveying the rest of the people and cars in the lot. She caught his eye briefly, not necessarily meaning to but it happened when a person was aware of their surroundings sometimes. She smiled a little bit and nodded, looking away because the exchange was forced and awkward, making her way into the building.
It pretty packed outside in the parking lot but Kiele guessed the majority of the people parked were staying in the lodge across the way. There was only a maximum of fifteen to twenty people inside the Luna Mesa right at that moment. She noticed a small table to the right of the bar and sat down, spotting Walter at the bar and waving at him with a smile. He nodded to her, a gesture that said he’d be right with her, and disappeared into the back. She looked down at the scarred wood table and breathed in a sigh. The past few days were good but this day was going to be better. She was finally done with all her work and she could finally relax.
He reached in his pocket for the last cigarette he'd been saving before catching a glimpse of a woman as she stared over at him. She was pretty, alright, in every way possible and Mac was certain she was the new girl, thinking back to when Walter brought up the subject of new comers in town which was to expected during this time of the year. The hick would know if she wasn't; Caineville wasn't that big of a populated town.
She smiled and eventually strayed away from him which caused Mac to smirk to himself. He was used to people doing that to him, though he didn't really mind. Sometimes, it was best to be feared in a sense. He wondered what she was doing in a town like this...why bother coming all the way down to the middle of nowhere, the only attraction being the canyons?
Lighting his cigarette, enjoying what would be the last of his nicotine until the end of the week, his mind wandered back to the new girl as she entered the Luna Mesa but it wasn't necessarily about why she would move out here.
Mac wiped the sweat from his forehead as the sun blared down on him in the late afternoon, though he just shrugged it off and stuffed the rag he used into his pocket. He was used to it; practically living in a desert all your life did that to you. He was leaning against his beat up truck which was parked outside The Luna Mesa, the one place he ventured to after work or in between breaks whenever the time came for him to itch for a drink. Of course, most people strayed away from him whenever he walked in but they were right to in a way...he was bad news and if anyone started with him, he'd come out on top.
That's just the way things were. Sometimes he started fights and other times he didn't but given he was constantly seen with a whisky bottle, chances are the former was more often and when that happened, things got bloody really quickly. He also had a habit of not knowing what the word 'no' meant and formed obsessions/targets with people whom got his eye. If new comers arrived to town, they'd be told straight out that he was nothing but bad news.
He stared out past the rest of the cars that were parked for the bar as if he were waiting for something or someone before running a hand over his face and sighing. He could use a drink right about now.
