while I'm thinking about sandy I think, for one, she was his grandmas cat. bear doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would do a photoshoot with his cat and then frame the pictures. but he does strike me as the guy who would guiltily take his dead grandmas cat when he takes her house even though he doesn't really care.

and two why do I keep seeing people say when he made his wish nikki got possessed by sandy? why are we saying bears cat wanted to fuck him? stop saying that.

keep seeing people say bear was sympathetic until [blah blah blah arbitrary moment where they feel he went too far] but honestly he never was.

he didn't start out completely evil, but he was always a self centered loser. he made that waitress sit down and pretend to be nikki for him. his cat died because he was careless with his pills. and then he stuffs his dead, supposedly beloved, cat into a trash bag and tosses her before scrolling nikki's social media. when nikki talks about quitting the music shop, he's upset that she's "leaving him". he doesn't support her ambition, not if it means he doesn't get the access to her that he wants.

the first night she stays over, when the real nikki snaps back and freaks out he says "what the fuck, that really scared me, it made me think I did something you didn't like". guilt tripping her without even considering if she was okay or not. when he talks to Ian the next day he says "she really freaked me out, acting total psycho". not exactly the way you'd talk about someone you love going through a hard time.

a few times he lists off what he likes about her, and every time he starts with "youre beautiful". I struggle to think of a time he lists off a specific personality trait he ever liked about her. he doesn't even know what crystal she'd like. I bet she would've fucking loved that citrine. but he didn't get it because he didn't know her. he bought the willow "for her" but was too self absorbed to ever even say what it was.

even the wish. it's not that the willow is a cursed object. it isn't a monkey paw. if bear had wished anything else, anything that didn't force something on someone else, it would have been fine. he could have wished to change himself for her. he could have wished to be happy without her love. he could have wished to make her life better whether she loves him back or not. but he didn't want any of that. he wanted nikki to be his idea of the perfect girlfriend: a beautiful girl who's head over heels for him, and nothing else.

of course he didn't know the wish would actually work, why would it? but that assumption is what lets him be so selfish. because it obviously won't work, this is just a man doing some emotional venting, he says exactly what's on his mind. and what's on his mind is "Nikki is the problem here". and the one thing he wants more than anything is for her to change.

from the very beginning everything has been about him. he doesn't care about nikki, he cares about what she can do for him. he never deserved any sympathy, and was never a good guy. he just didn't deserve to die right when we met him.

on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)

Just saw the interview where Curry Barker explained that it's totally possible to get a normal wish from the One Wish Willow, and I love the way they did that so much. The reason Obsession happened isn't because it's trying to twist Bear's desires into something evil. It's not even because he phrased his want wrong. Obsession happened because Bear got his hands on a magic item that could do anything in existence, and chose to force someone to fall in love with him, which is an inherently evil thing to do.

nobody fucking talk to me im just thinking about how, when light is caught in the warehouse, he doesn't lose his cool even when he's absolutely proven to be kira. he bursts into maniacal laughter but then immediately turns back to Scheming and Manipulation, coming up with lies that visibly make the task force doubt themselves. thinking about he doesn't lose it until matsuda shoots him, taking away his power and control over self with those bullets. thinking about how light and L were both totally in control of themselves until the very end of their game. but light and matsuda unravel each other as matsuda destroys light's power and light destroys matsuda's trust.

ok im not done actually. thinking about how, through all of death note, light progressively and intentionally divorces the kira identity from the reality of his body — how the two being linked means death, as the exposure of the kira identity as him would result in execution. thinking about how subjecting his physical body to imprisonment is done in conjunction with completely giving up the kira identity, and its a physical imposition that he himself chooses. thinking about how the violation of light's autonomy through the chain in the yotsuba arc is done to a light that is not kira — how light with his memories is never actually physically threatened.

and then matsuda shoots him. it is literally the first time that the sanctity and integrity of light's physical body is violated while light is acting as kira, and that causes him to fucking shatter. thinking about how matsuda forcefully reminds light of his own existence as a human, imposing physicality on his kira persona, essentially dragging him down to earth, shoving him into a coffin that ryuk nails shut.

thinking about how ryuk's betrayal reminded light that he wasn't a god, but first matsuda's betrayal proved kira was human. how, till the end, matsuda was the one member of the task force willing to see the humanity in kira, and how he shows sympathy for light as he's begging ryuk not to kill him.

thinking about how, as kira's enemies see him as a monster and his followers see him as a god, it is matsuda who always sees him as a human — who affirms that humanity even by shooting him. who doesn't engage with light's ideological justifications, only with the very human sins he committed of betraying his family. how matsuda is the reason that the kira identity can never truly be divorced from humanity within the text.

thinking about how light thought matsuda understood him. light rejected ryuk's assessment of him as a shinigami — all he did, he did for humanity, or so he told himself. a human acting for humans. but no one thought of Kira as a human by the end — maybe not even light. except matsuda, whose assessments of kira light affirms throughout the manga even when no one else does.

how matsuda was "fond" of light until the very end, despite him being kira. one can no more be fond of an angel than a devil.
