when you have to decide whether to force your food down or carry it around with you all day bc your meds take away your appetite
"Today I'm going to bed on time" and other lies I tell myself, such as "I'll do that when I get home" or, "I don't have to set a reminder, I won't forget."
What is a thing you keep telling yourself you'll do but then don't do?
ok this is the last episode/videogame mission/page or article I will read before going to bed (stays up an extra 3 hours)
genuinely terrifying how adhd will have you be fully aware of the responsibilities you’re neglecting and yet its like you’re being piloted by a super chill hedonistic demon who can’t hear you/doesnt care
The ADHD auditory processing difficulties mood
I don’t have ADHD and can’t speak for people who do, but this is a common enough experience that there is a psychological model of memory that attempts to explain it. The tl/dr is that part of your brain repeats speech that you’ve just heard in a loop. So by the time you’ve said “huh?” your brain has already ‘heard’ the words again and processed them, so you are able to answer the question without needing it repeated.
Nope! Lots of people tend to experience this, yes, but it’s not a daily struggle in the same way it is for people with ADHD.
The working memory is actually something that people with ADHD struggle with, which is why we experience this so often! Because our brains don’t store that information, like everyone else’s does (there are two parts to the phonological store - one that’s for storing the info, and one that loops it to help you process) and the loop takes longer to complete!
Everyone can relate to this occasionally, like they can with some adhd symptoms, but this is something that people with adhd struggle with daily, and it’s an actual struggle. If Neurotypical people could stop invalidating us in the notes of this post (and many others) by saying that the things we talk about are completely normal and aren’t actually struggles, that would be great.
it's not normal if it happens all the time and makes it harder to just live your life. everyone forgets stuff, but do they forget to take their midterm bc they were busy studying for it and when they remembered it was already over? do they forget they have hw due often enough to fail a class when they otherwise get As on every exam? do they get stuck for days at home bc they can't figure out when to leave the house to do an optional thing?
tell me you have a disability without telling me you have a disability
adhd is like [watches movie] [gets distracted by phone] [misses one of the best parts] [rewinds] [gets distracted by phone] [misses one of the best parts] [rewinds] [gets distracted by texts making this post and forgets it for ten minutes] [clicks back into app to finish post] [gets distracted by making post about getting distracted] [misses one of the best p
and listens to the same damn sentence a million times bc you keep missing the exact same scene
list of things i’ve done to make my home more ADHD friendly
1. waterproof clock in the shower
2. laundry baskets in the bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room
3. trash can with automatic motion sensing lid (same price as one of same size with footpedal!!!!)
4. organizer hanging on bedroom door for odds and ends that have no “belonging place”
5. wall hook for hoodies/jackets worn frequently so they don’t end up on the ground or bed or thrown over the back of a chair
6. clear bins so that things can be stored but aren’t invisible (the old can’t-see-it-so-it-doesn’t-exist problem)
7. all tupperware is the same!!! no mismatched/lost lids
8. all socks are the same!!!! no wasting time looking for matching socks
9. shoeboxes in drawers to split sections for different types of things
9. something i plan to do soon: label the cupboards by what’s in them (see #6)
- buy only dark clothes so you dont have to separate your laundry
- have drawers for clothes that don't wrinkle so you have less things to fold (underwear, sports bras,) synthetic stuff in general like workout clothes
- keep things in small zipper pouches when traveling (phone chargers, headphones, other things that tangle)
-put things to sort later in garbage bags in the garage (so it doesn't give me anxiety everyday)
-keep things you need often in the car so you don't forget(I have a bicycle pump, helmet, and chest hr monitor. didn't prevent me from forgetting My bike when going mountain biking last week tho 🙃)
I know these aren't pretty solutions, but they work. And something messy that works, is better than something pretty that causes dysfunction
some people were asking for a actual and i can never pass up an opportunity to procrastinate so here’s just a couple of things i always need to remind myself of…now back to my paper :(
can confirm, playing videos is not a break
I find socialising stressful... I realised recently that it’s because I hear all sounds without filter and my brain can’t *quite* keep up with them or focus where it should 😊😊
