Bell Siphon Explained When I was starting out building an Aquaponics system, I really don't have an idea how the bell siphon works hence I am not sure how to build it.
Indoor Aquaponics Setup – Small Scale Here is an indoor setup that I wanted for my self. I bet it's hard to grow fruits indoor since you don't have a pollinator and you would have to do it manually.
5 Week Lettuce
It has been 6 weeks since we embedded the cauliflower seeds in our grow bed. Unfortunately after a week of waiting we’re not seeing any seedlings sprouting, then we decided to plant lettuce instead.
So it was ween 5 weeks since we planted the lettuce. Below are images of them.
The color of the lettuce is not that healthy, we think that it is due to the pump not functioning to its potential.…

U Siphon Found this video on YouTube regarding an alternative to a Bell Siphon. It seems very simple, you just need to add a media filter in the opening of the siphon and that's it!
Since we had a new media and the growbed is empty, time to sprinkle some seeds!
Found this seeds in our cabinet and we wanted to see how it goes with an aquaponics system.
When we inspected the system we noticed that the pressure of the water is low even though we set the water pump to its max setting. Base on our observation, the nozzle is lose so we did a band-aid fix to that.
That’s the update for now, let’s see if we have cauliflower seedlings next week!
Cauliflower, Day One Since we had a new media and the growbed is empty, time to sprinkle some seeds!
Week Twelve! New Media
Week Twelve! New Media
So we replaced the gravel media with expanded clay imported from Australia! Thank you to my dearest sister who carried the 50L sack all the way to a courier service!
We have also replaced the hose as the old one is semi-clear and algae keeps on building and we keep on cleaning.
We have harvested all the lettuces and leave the mint and tomato to grow. Below are some pictures that we took. Happy…

How A Bell Siphon Works! We found this video on youtube showing the Bell Siphon in action. You can see the water draining through a clear PVC. Nice!
Week 11, Red Bell Pepper
Week 11, Red Bell Pepper
It’s week eleven and the first thing we notice was the red bell pepper.
Not much to report for the past two weeks, except that the color of the basil turned yellowish, could be lack of iron and other nutrients. We have not tried to supplement the system with organic fertilizers yet.
We are planning to replace the media from rock pebbles to expanded clay! More images soon to come! :)

Here is our week 9 Aquaponics with almost all the lettuce harvested.
We cleaned the hose since sunlight can get through as it is a little bit transparent. Water runs well ever since.
The tomato is not growing as expected. We suspect lack of sunlight.
But the basil grows tall and the mint grows bushy.
The bell pepper is turning red, a little bit more then we can harvest it.
Week 9, Towering Basil Here is our week 9 Aquaponics with almost all the lettuce harvested. We cleaned the hose since sunlight can get through as it is a little bit transparent.
It is week 8! We were not able to post on week 7 since we were on vacation. When we got back, here is what we saw.
Forest of Greens!
The grow bed could not possibly contain the over flowing of greens, it looked like a forest.
Check out the Basil, Mint and Bell Pepper.
We took the time in taking photos of the tilapia as well! Below are barely 8 month old tilapia. The black one is the biggest of them all (palm size), the others are just like the size of the red tilapia.
Harvested some lettuce to trim the grow bed. The size of the lettuce is not that big since the grow bed is very crowded.

Week Six, Struggling Pump
Week Six, Struggling Pump
Here is our week 6 Aquaponics set-up. The mint is still doing great, but we think that the lettuce has reached their growing limit due to sun exposure and became quite leggy but over-all still good. We may have transfer the set-up at the center for maximum sun exposure.
There was a problem with the water pump when we got there, it is not pumping water at all.
We needed to clean the pump of…

Week Five, Growing Your Greens
Week Five, Growing Your Greens
The ants did their job, we now have a bell pepper! Five weeks since we transplanted the bell pepper from the pot, we saw this little guy.
The grow bed now looks like a mini forest.
Still the mint is growing at an awesome pace! The bock choys are growing fast as well, but not to leggy we hope.
Here is now the basil.
Maybe we can eat the lettuce next week? :)
We thought that the tomato…

Week Four, Growing Crazy
Week Four, Growing Crazy
Took this photos this morning, the growth is crazy, we propagated the mint since it was branching out of control. My friend, the owner of the place, sprinkled lots of bok choy seeds in the grow bed last Wednesday and now we can see them sprouting, lots of them.

Week Three for the Roof Deck Aquaponics
Week Three for the Roof Deck Aquaponics
The following images were taken on June 14, and it has been 3 weeks since we sprinkled lettuce seeds and transplanted mint and bell pepper. So far so good, the plants are happy and green but I have not seen any pollinators yet since the roof deck is too windy.

Aquaponics Week Two
Two weeks since we sprinkled lettuce seeds in the growbed and so far the seedlings are not leggy. When we visited the setup today, we can immediately see the difference between the current setup and our home setup, our home setup lacks sunlight which resulted to leggy lettuce seedlings, but on this current setup the leaves are wider and they love the sunlight!
