Fifty years ago today, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was lost on Lake Superior with all hands (29 souls) lost. I remember being just a young man in middle school and riding on the bus hearing them talk about on the radio.

Like Gordon Lightfoot said - "The lake it is said never gives up it's dead when the Gales of November come early!!"

Every year at the Mariner Hall, they ring the bell from the Fitzgerald (the only item ever removed from the wreck) 29 time. Since the death of Gordon Lightfoot, in honor of his song and the awareness it made of the wreck, they now come the bell 30 times - one for each of the souls lost and now once for Gordon Lightfoot!!
