godddd yeah now that you pointed it out i can't stop watching it. full disclosure i went to a training today abt emotional development and now i'm in such a whumpy mood and i'm gonna just ramble. so. bob is running and then alexei grabs him and he freezes. not because alexei is holding him still but because it completely jolts him. i say that because you can see when alexei lets go and turns, bob's hand remains in the same place and it's still there when he screams. he doesn't just stop because alexei is restraining him, he goes into full fight or flight mode and freezes. his face stops. his hands stop. he completely shuts down. even when the chicken runs at him, he shields himself but stays put. and the way he tenses??? like obviously he's already scared shitless but when alexei grabs him he tenses so bad his shoulders are at his ears.

i'm actually so grateful to have an excuse to stare at the scene in slow motion because it reinforces my headcanon that bob's fight or flight response is freeze (and if you want extra angst, he really, really hates that that is his instinct). in my mind this is because he learned at a young age (probably under 4 years old) that the "best" thing to do was stop fighting and take the abuse from his dad. probably because it was over sooner or "not as bad" if he just let it happen. rather than try to keep running or even fight alexei's grasp, bob completely gives in because that's what he's been conditioned to do since childhood. i'd go so far as to say there's an element of dissociation here because of how aggressively bob freezes and the fact that he doesn't respond to alexei at all until the chicken hits alexei with the sign. but what's really killing me is his hands!! his hands barely move at all after alexei grabs him!!

his left hand does some floating but his right hand really doesn't move. and what's really interesting is that he kind of looks like he wants to help alexei after he gets hit but he can't bring himself to unclench his fists so he doesn't. now going back to my point about bob's fight or flight response, i think his natural or born instinct leans toward flight. he tries to run in the vault. he tries to put distance between himself and valentina. he runs from the incinerator. but when alexei grabs him it puts him into this state of overwhelming fear that just completely shuts his body down. and it's hard to tell because of the way the scene is cut but can i add also that HE DOES THE SAME THING WITH HIS DAD.

in the first shot bob is steps in front of the wall. then it cuts to his dad for a few seconds and when we see bob again, he's fully tensed in on himself and backing up behind the wall. from this extreme over-analysis into what probably means nothing, i conclude that as a child bob would try to run and hide from his dad but ultimately froze and covered his face the best he could while he took whatever abuse his dad forced him to endure that day. thank you for coming to my bob ted talk.

now before you go i must also add that bob doesn't remember alexei doing that in the void but do you think alexei remembers? he doesn't look like he cares about bob's reaction so i think this is an issue that the whole team would have to learn about later. bob is not okay with being touched unexpectedly. bob is not okay with being restrained in any capacity. i like to think he's okay with touch when he can see it (for example yelena grabbing his arm at the end of the movie when she's in full view of him) but if someone touches him when he's not looking it can be a huge trigger. and because we love the whump here imagine they only found that out upon triggering a panic attack. yeah. good hurt 💔

Can we take a moment to appreciate how well-written Thunderbolts* was?

First of all, having the characters all meet in the burn-bag facility with the old classic "Locked Room" scenario?? Genius. It's the only way a messy group of people like this would work together, but it also provides the opportunity for them all to talk, which shows us who they all are- their character synopsis if you're unfamiliar (like I was with Ghost for example), their personalities, and their initial relationships to each other. I feel like no other Marvel movie that I can remember has the characters openly acknowledge being aware of each other prior to meeting (except maybe Black Panther to Cap in Civil War, I think?). But it makes perfect sense that they all (except Bob, who was a normie, drug addict not invested in news, and a secluded lab rat for who knows how long) would have heard of each other. Which also means they're coming in with pre-conceived notions about each other and their line of work. Except. Bob. Which means he only picks up on what other people do, and they say about each other. This sets him to get a particularly bad picture of Walker and a particularly positive one of Yelena. The first sin or poor personality trait of hers he's introduced to is her shame room, but obviously he can see her pain and guilt (maybe even feel it) which only makes their bond stronger because he relates.

When I first saw the movie, I thought the start was a bit slow and maybe it should have just begun with the burn-bag infiltration, but after thinking about it I realized why that whole Yelena mission is in there. Not just to show her reckless depression (they could have done that countless ways, if less grandiose than jumping off the world's tallest building) or give her that opening monologue. Not even to blow up the lab. It was all to foreshadow Bob. The lab, the locked back room full of secrets, and of course the guinea pig- I didn't really get this at first since we never see it again. But then I realized the whole reason it's there is god-tier foreshadowing of what Yelena's purpose in this entire film is- to rescue Bob. They had to show the lab at the beginning of the movie because it's not only the location of the final showdown, which only would have made sense to Bob otherwise, but to foreshadow the true villain of the whole affair. Not Bob, trauma.

And the parallels?? I'm just now catching up seeing all the incredible posts people are putting together of the callbacks and parallels to the original avengers and character backstories. Like Bucky showing up to join/save the group by rocking up and shooting the bomb gun which was exactly how he was first introduced as the Winter Soldier. Walker saying "On your left" like he's still trying and failing to be Cap after everything. People have made very convincing arguments about hundreds of tiny allusions tying each Thunderbolt to an original Avenger, as if specifically taking up the mantle of their position in the group.

Obviously I don't have to get into the messaging. Fucking heart-wrenching, beautifully done, and they let the metaphors speak for themselves instead of screaming the answer at the audience like we're a bunch of drooling morons, which damn-near impossible to find in non-indie media these days. The mental illness and general trauma representation in this movie were so damn good. I loved that everyone's sort of got their own brand or archetype of it- just like everyone in the real world reacts differently to trauma. Recklessness, depression, rage, self-isolation and emotional detachment, burying yourself in the glory days, control issues (I'm looking at you Valentina) self-destruction. The gang's all here.

I just wanted to get that out. Respect for the artistry. Respect for them letting us have artistry again for once.

I haven't seen anyone say this so I will. Bucky and Bob's story's parallel each other the same way two chapters follow each other

They both had pasts rooted in violence: Bucky grew up at the end of the first world war and ended up fighting in the second world war. Bob grew up in a house that was constantly filled with domestic violence and abuse

They both became human weapons, they differ here with Bucky's being involuntary and Bob's being semi-voluntary if ill informed: They were both experimented on with alternative versions of the super soldier serum that for better or worse turned them into super-powered beings

They both were taken advantage of: Bucky was abused and used as a weapon with his humanity completely discarded and Bob was used for press for Valentina's attempt to make it big in a world that was slowly loosing it's superhero's

They both have severe mental illness: Bob and Bucky both have PTSD from events in their pasts that still affect their everyday. Bob potentially has Bipolar and Bucky has anxiety and depression. (Bob probably has those too)

They were both saved by people they hurt: Bucky beat the ever loving shit out of Steve, Sam, T'Challa and Natasha yet all four of them still stuck around to help them. Bob hurt the entire time (I would say John and Yelena got the worst of it) and they still did what they could to save him and pull him back from the brink

They both have a "dark alternative self": Both Bob and Bucky have a versions of themselves that is a dark reflection of them. Bob has the void which is all his insecurities and past trauma personified and Bucky has the Winter Soldier who is a reflection of his past self

They both feel unworthy of the love from the people around them: At first Bucky was reluctant for Steve and Sam's help because he "wasn't worth all of this" and Bob seems to think that no matter what he does he will make a mistake and people will push him away

They both had to accept that their dark parts are not who they truely are: Bucky was constantly worried that in some way or another the Winter Soldier would always be there and would always come out and Bob knows that his darkness lives inside of him and if were to ever lose control of his powers the Void would come back

There are probably more things, but this is all I could think of at the moment

I just think those two are closer than a lot of people realise which is why a lot of Bucky fans are drawn to Bob

I volunteer at the library and I was shelving books today. While doing so I was reminded of Thunderbolts and I have since determined that Lewis Pullman is the type of guy to write kids picture books with a mixed media art style of watercolor and colored pencils.

If he ever puts out a kids book I will 100% not be surprised because that guy was gonna be a social worker. That man has a level of empathy and respect that works so perfectly for a kids book author.

Also just his name sounds like the name of a kids book author. “Pullman” shelved with to Putts and Potter.

Sorry to jump on the post, but it got me thinking 😂😂 Like, are we talking about actual, proper, famous setting?

Because my first thought was to make it a school of rock/breakfast club kind of thing with last year of high school students that meet in detention and decide to form a band (and then go on to become famous and adored, much like in the movie, in which they go from secondary roles in the shadow to get the avengers title).

I'm thinking about Bucky being some young music teacher who was actually a famous musician, to keep with his mentor/tired nanny thing. Maybe some decently famous guitarist? Until he got into an Accident and broke his arm and couldn't/wouldn't play as well, so he switched careers. He needed some wires in the hospital to keep the bones in place, very nasty stuff, and now all the kids joke that he's got a metal arm.

I'm not sure about any of the rest though, what do you think? To keep Yelena as the protagonist/leader/frontgirl she'd have to be the singer, and it fits very well that Bob would be at the drums (poor guy probably has a panic attack or two before going to the stage. Also idek who you ship him with, but whoever it is is definitely pleasently surprised to see him play-- because he's good, yeah, but because drummers tend to have very nice arms, that Bob would hide under his big sweater)

me n my pal were yapping, def bob on drums, florence i know plays guitar and used to have a singing youtube, so we’re thinking lead singer/guitarist for yelena! oh also i love the idea of music teacher bucky that’s so yummy. i don’t really ship bob with anyone, i like the family dynamic of the thunderbolts a lot but yes i agree that man has really nice arms…

john i feel like would be on guitar and ava on keyboard, and we think alexei would be band manager!

With the announcement of Taylor Swift being engaged, I propose to you..

Drummer of a Well Known Rock Band Bob Reynolds and Star Hockey Player John Walker!! All the annoying male fans get pissed because whenever Bob shows up at the games, the camera stays on him instead of “focusing on the game”. John, of course, is the first to defend his boyfriend and makes a point to blow him kisses or skate up to where he’s standing on the sidelines. It’s so obvious that they’re in love that eventually everyone just accepts it.

It helps that Bob is close with the WAGs who have taken him in as one of their own!! Back off their boy, John! He’s teaching them how to make homemade poptarts this week so John better get cozy with a beer anytime the team is hanging out.

And of course, every fan of Bob’s band freaks out when they see John in the crowd (which is every chance he gets). It’s definitely not what you’d expect John’s scene to be but he’s jamming out to every song. Plus John loses his mind every time he watches his boyfriend up there playing drums all hot and sweaty.

Fans went crazy the first time Bob said he loved John on stage. It was everywhere so of course, when they got engaged, Bob announced it by referring to John as his fiancé and watching the chaos as fans went crazy putting the pieces together. The screams and cheers around them were wonderful, but Bob was staring at John in the crowd, blushing and grinning like a little kid.

Bob finds a new hobby....drums. John is threatening to move out of the tower now.

this is where the rest of the team convinces val to foot the bill for soundproofing one of the rooms, so that bob can bang his drums without john threatening to move and ava getting headaches, lol. bob gets to set up the room however he pleases. there’s posters and decor dedicated to his favorite music artists, antique instruments and music themed things, so on and so forth. it comes his own little safe haven. whenever he’s in a not so good headspace, he drums for hours and it helps him process things 💞 i could also see him writing his own music. perhaps songwriter bob reynolds needs to be a thing now…hmmm
