On a positive note, today I woke up feeling like writing and I have done so. For the first time in a month, I have written a little for a fic and actually finished a chapter that was almost done π
This is more of a comment than a question, so feel free to ignore it. Iβm honestly angry at how your stories donβt get half the kudos/interactions they deserve. The time and work you devote to them is insane. And look, maybe this my hater side coming out, but some of these other works that get all the interactions haver super sloppy writing and ideas. I also honestly think people are becoming more lazy and lack the ability to interact with longer works. No one wants to read. Letβs be honest. I just want you to know how much I love your writing. Hello, I'm gonna be honest, I doubted whether to post this or not π but in the end, I decided to and buckle up, because this is long.
First of all, thank you so much for your kind words and the feelings behind the message, like seriously. Thank you so much.
It's true that the lack of engagement kills us. Even if I write for myself, the truth is, I edit it for others. If I was happy with just writing, I wouldn't post.
I hate editing. I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it over, and over: I HATE EDITING. I currently have 5 finished fics and I haven't posted them because I need to edit them. Some have been written for months, waiting in the limbo to get me to edit them, but I just hate it so much, I can't do it.
I loved writing them, but if I edit them, then it'll be for others so they can read and tell me if they like it or not. For me, editing takes way more time than writing. When I told Luna how many hours I spent editing per chapter, she called me crazy. Wanna know how long I take? 5 to 7 hours. I overanalyze every paragraph, write, rewrite it, and most times, I go back to the first version, but I still do it. I'm also constantly googling whether something is correct or not, and I've so many ENG forums open to see if the preposition is correct, if the fucking comma goes there or not, if it's a wheter or and if, or it's a like or an as.
It's pretty simple. Years ago, I left writing and posting because someone left me a really hurtful comment about grammatical mistakes in a fic, so now I obsess because the last thing I want is a repeat of that. English is not my mother tongue. Heck, it's not even my second language, but my third.
So yeah, the lack of interaction kills me because I've poured a lot of time, effort, and hope into something, and I see it receives no attention.
Now, the part of your ask that made me doubt posting: the sloppy writing getting more popular... I've also thought so, but such is life. I also want to add another layer to your comment: the AI debacle.
Look, I don't live under a rock, and I might be gone from twt, but I know about it. Seeing fics that got so many kudos, hits, and comments, and discovering it was AI slop, fucking wrecked me. The feeling of betrayal was massive...
I'm multifandom. I have read some of the fics that got mentioned on the fucking document, and I lowk admired and liked one of the authors. I saw her getting lots of praise for her writing, and I read her works with a critical eye, trying to see what made her writing so cool and beloved to improve mine. Discovering I have poured so much and gotten so little, while others were smashing ENTER after a prompt on a fucking webpage and getting praised for it, hurt.
BUT, and this is the thing that always keeps me floating: I've my own readers. Yeah, I wish I had more. I wish my inbox got flooded with comments like I see other writers get. I see some fics posting, and in a minute, they have like +5 comments, and they don't even interact with their readers, and they still get them, like (!!!!) But I'm not. And that's what it is. I'm myself, and I've bad moments where I think of quitting because my doubts weigh too much, but the thing is, I have readers. Whenever I post, I always get 1 or 2 comments asap and 2 or 3 more during the night.
I have tons of silent readers. I wish they weren't. I wish they'd drop a word or two in, but I know that most of my readers are silent. I know because I've been posting since 2021, and I recognise the names. Some names are still here, fic after fic, and they are usually the first ones to smash the kudos button. Some are newer, but still the first to show up. I also know I've many readers who only dip their toes into my fics once they're finished, drop a kudos and leave the scene to wait for the next one.
I know all this, and sometimes, that makes it easier. But it's true: the lack of engagement on WIPs sometimes gets me.
I like to remind myself that some of my most popular fics I considered them to be flops because no one engaged with them while I was posting.
One example would be Be Kind To my Demons. I bet you don't know this, but I actually cried when I posted a chapter of that fic and got less than usual. If you go to that fic, you'll see 'bigger' numbers, but if you look at the dates, you'll see the OG comments were like 4-6, more or less. For that chapter, I only got 2 comments and I couldn't help it: I cried my heart out, wondering if I had messed up, if people hated the fic now.
I kept posting, with my heart in my mouth and stomachache, wondering if someone was going to read or if they were all going to dip... now it's my 2nd most viewed fic, and the one that people always praise and tell me how much they loved and how much it matters to them. But I wish more people had told me so while I was posting.
It's always like this. I always try for the 2-3 people who ALWAYS comment, because hey, at least I have 2/3 who always show up, but it's hard. It's gutting to see the numbers dwindle as the fic goes on. There's always a point where I ask myself: for whom am I posting? For the void?
But then I see that at least there's someone interested, and that, that makes it worth it.
So please, keep commenting. Even if it's only one or two people showing up, YOU make it worth it.
Please, if you're a silent reader, stop doing so. I don't bite, and you've no idea how much it means to me and to any writer out there to receive a line or something in our inboxes.
I write for myself, but I edit and post for others. I have tons of fun writing, not caring whether it's sloppy, repetitive, or grammatically awful. I edit, and I bang my head against a wall trying to make it cohesive and presentable for hours for others... I only ask for a little line that can easily say: I liked this.
But you do you, I guess. Just don't wonder where them writers are at?, when tomorrow your ship gets no new content. Oh, I wonder why that might be π and no, this isn't just me. This is a shared feeling. I've talked with many writers behind the scenes, and we all share the same thoughts. People lose steam and motivation as the engagement drops.
I almost forgot the last point of your ask: I also honestly think people are becoming more lazy and lack the ability to interact with longer works. No one wants to read.
Funny, because I always see it the other way around. People are always asking for longer fics, but I have no idea if that's the norm or just what I see because it's what I engage with. TBH, I don't engage with short things, so I've no idea if the majority prefer short things. If that's the case... oh well, I'm screwed (>w<)
I can't write short, like for real, but I also can't read short, so... But that said, it's true that I've seen huge numbers in short things and I know TikTok has made people's span of attention decrease, so Β―\_(γ)_/Β― what can one do against that? I'm not gonna write something sloppy just because it's short and post it, that's just. No.
Well, thank you so much for your note. I wish I got more too, and some days, it crushes me, but I always try to be grateful for what I have. I also think SM perception is fucked up because even if something gets 200 kudos, that's 200 people. I don't even know 200 people?! But, yeah, when one compares, that's when the fun gets drained and doubts arise. I think getting some 'popular' fics has screwed me. I remember when I posted, got 100 kudos and thought I had hit gold. Fun times. Now I compare everything with my 'big hits', and yeah :/ How can you compare 3,5k vs 200?

Carry It On: Shouto is in coma, Bakugou is a reaper who accidentally gets Shouto as his apprentice... all while the clock is ticking on Shouto π This one is kind of fluffy... but if you read the comments, you'll see multiple people saying that they cried π
feel the blue: Touya abandons Shouto to his 'luck' in an abusive house. Shouto turns alcoholic and depressed as heck, all while he develops abandonment issues. Luckily, there's someone always looking after him in the shadows. This one is also waaay fluffier than the ones you mentioned, but it does deal with a lot of Shouto issues.
carmine: Shouto and Katsuki are going through a rough patch in their relationship. Shouto finds wine is decent company... Katsuki doesn't like that.
what truly matters: Bakugou wants to be the #1 hero, and that means he has no time to go to a xmas party... until he gets visited by three 'ghosts' that show him how his obsession is fucking up his relationship with Shouto and how it's not 'only a xmas party'. Based on A Christmas Carol. Comments also say I made them cry π€
I started writing a fic, a heavy angst one based on grief. Both Shouto and Katsuki go through grief and bond. The idea was suuuuuuper slow burn, with 'enemies' to friends to lovers. I wrote 54k, but for now that's on standby.
TBH, I think I'm gonna take another break. The lack of engagement is super disheartening and it always makes me question my writing and stories.

Hello! Yep, I no longer post WIPs. I think I've only posted like 5 WIPs, and out of those, 3 are STILL WIPs, so... π
For bunny, I've drafted on ao3 up to chapter 16, so I guess that I'll update two or three times a week.
I like to post on workdays, minus Fridays, so expect me to drop a chapter usually on Monday and Thursday to close the 'week', and if I'm posting a third one, then idk, whenever I feel like it or remember to.
