Sci-fi musical, TOOMORROW (1970), starring a young Olivia Newton-John. A throwaway 1970s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, but with real people. The sets are nice though, as are the primitive special effects.

I watched this film last night (it's on Amazon Prime in the UK) and it was a slice of cheesy silliness. Despite the alluringly tacky sci-fi scenes above, most of the film is a sub-Carry On-style comedy set at a fictional London college of the arts that's full of groovy gals and chauvinist chaps, but Olivia gives good chirpy Aussie chick and there's a hilarious bit at the end when the roof comes off the Roundhouse in Camden and everyone inside rises up into space via the magic of shoddy special effects.

A few favourites from the small-but-cool show Barbara Hepworth In Colour, currently at the Courtauld Gallery, London (until 6 September 2026). Most of the sculptures are in glass boxes, so not easy to photograph well, but they're nonetheless very pleasing.

It has come to my attention that some of you have never seen what I firmly believe to be the greatest music video of all time: Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. It is the perfect marriage of a galactically bombastic power ballad and a writhing mass of 1980s video clichés, thrown into the path of a wind machine and blasted down a moodily lit corridor into the realm of legend.

In case you’re wondering what the heck they were thinking of when they made it, I remember Bonnie once explaining on TV that it’s about the dreams of a headmaster’s daughter, hence all the boys in (and out of) uniform. In retrospect, the whole shebang is quite fascinatingly female gaze-y, and I’m pretty sure it was a major formative influence on my pubescent imagination.

And yes, there is also a very amusing literal version, but for my money, the original is definitely the most hilarious…

The underside of a water lily leaf is one of the most unexpectedly pretty things out there. I saw this one at Kew Gardens in August 2021 – it genuinely was that shade of purple, no filters have been applied.
