The very first time Hannibal sees Will laughing after leaving their old lives behind is when they are on the run and looking for food.

Will finds some old fishing rods in the shed of an abandoned house. And as he is fishing in a river nearby, Hannibal is watching him intrigued, from the river bank, scrabbling something in a notebook. Entertained.

And when the fish is pulling, Will feels its weight bending the tip of the rod down. His eyes are sparkling. He leaves his body weight on his right foot and reels in as the fish fights for its dear life. Will slowly makes his way towards the river bank where the water is shallow, guiding the fish towards his direction.

When he pulls the fish out of the water, he laughs. Loudly. Hannibal looks at him mesmerized. He doesn't care too much about the fish, he is not even intrigued enough to look at it for a few seconds. His eyes are on Will. His excitement is contagious, the light in his eyes is filling his world with vivid colors.

I think a lot of people don’t understand that the reason Hannibal did a lot of things that “ruined Will’s life” wasn’t always for shits and giggles. It was partly because he was getting way too close to the truth or rather truths. Mads even confirmed in multiple interviews that what he did to Will like put him in prison was done not because it had been initially planned out, but because he would’ve been caught otherwise if he didn’t.

That means Will is that smart. If Will was “uneducated” and “dumb”, that wouldn’t have happened. It’s just that he’s smart, but also extremely unpredictable because he moves by a lot of different instincts.

Even Hannibal orchestrating what happened to Margot was because Will was so touch starved that he impulsively had unprotected sex with and impregnated a literal lesbian (WHICH HE KNEW ABOUT). That was never supposed to happen. That had the potential to derail Will from his focus on Abigail which would’ve been a major problem in Hannibal’s ongoing plans. That and the Mason Verger case was a social experiment in which all parties actually ended up benefiting from the results.

Although Mads did admit that Will having a child that wasn’t Abigail would have made Hannibal grumpy, if he truly wanted him to have nothing in his life that wasn’t him (which he doesn’t at all deny), he honestly would have killed his dogs or made them all disappear like Ingram did with Peter’s beloved barn animals. He isn’t so cruel and unreasonable that he doesn’t care about what Will thinks. In fact he cares a lot. That’s the point. Otherwise he wouldn’t have offered to let him have closure with all his lingering relationships, dogs included, before they were supposed to run away.

Even when he targeted Molly and Wally, he gave him multiple chances to choose between his old life and his new one. He wasn’t at all vague about it and warned him of what was to come depending on his decision.

Hannibal doesn’t go out of his way to kill and ruin and destroy everything in Will’s life to make sure he only has him to himself. He tries his best to make the best decisions for what he believes is best for Will. Sometimes they end up being the right decisions and other times, not. And he gives Will a choice in the matter, because he wants their bond to be genuine.
