The reason I say most fans would not like season four is because 99% of fanfic and fanart that are "post fall" are literally them being extremely gay and married but the reality is that season four Will would be like "yeah so anyways I'm back with my wife" and we'd beat around the bush for another 13 episodes

I really do think Bryan Fuller had read/watched Red Dragon (Manhunter) and said, "What if these two were in love?" and I think that's beautiful.

It's probably why I've eaten that shit up immediately, if you ask me, the most wonderful piece of television ever made (alongside Twin Peaks and Fleabag, for different reasons).

Will empathized with people right. so he empathized with Hannibal too. so whatever Will was feeling about Hannibal was actually what Hannibal felt about Will, because Will is permeable right like. he's obviously a person with his own emotions but he only accesses them through others so like. "do you ache for him?" he went 👁️ 👄 👁️ because it's like wait a damn minute. this whole time what I was feeling was love? what the helly.

Hannibal is the first person who does not just get read by Will, but who actively reads Will back with the same precision. The empathy stops being one directional. Will mirrors Hannibal, Hannibal mirrors Will, and there is no clean origin point for the emotion anymore.

So when Will experiences attraction, fascination, tenderness, longing, or ache, his mind has no stable place to anchor it. His usual framework says "this is what the other feels". But Hannibal is doing the same thing to him. Each one is receiving an affect already reflected.

That’s why the line “do you ache for him?” doesn't really need to be answered because it's more like a rupture rather than a revelation. The ache remains identical whether it is framed as Hannibal’s or Will’s. That is when Will realizes that the distinction might never have existed in the first place.

The love is not really discovered so much as it is named. The feeling was always there, but it had no grammatical subject. Once the word appears, it removes Will’s last defense, which was thinking the ache belonged to someone else.
