The best British band of the 90's? The long debate between Blur fans and their Oasis counterparts will probably continue for many decades to come. There is no denying that Blur made the more creative music with Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon at the helm and looking back at it, they had a much cooler image. Then again, their rivals were wearing pairs of John Lennon-esque sunglasses and long trench coats which will never look good regardless of how many million records you have sold.
Few songs can epitomise the sights and sounds of England's populated towns better than this great classic from Paul weller's, The Jam. Now that the weather is increasingly colder and the nights are growing increasingly longer, it's songs like these that sum up our British existence. Sure the weather is shit and there might be some underlining social problems that need to be addressed but I can't help find a sense of poetic romance within it all. At least that's my view anyway, good job boys.
Isaac Tichauer recently gave us all an insight into another one of his up and coming fine works, this track entitled 'Sometimes' could well be his best yet too. Although there is no set release date, he has put a low quality version of the full track up on his soundcloud page. It seems like he is still the king of creating those emotionally-charged, moody house anthems.
What do you get when you cross Mayor Hawthorn and Finnebassen, and then throw in a cheeky edit to match? The answer is this funky concoction of sounds that propels people to clap, stomp and shout-out their favourite lyrics in a scene of pure celebration. After a few listens it soon becomes clear that it is almost impossible to dislike the song and after a few more listens you realise that you are one of those guys on the dance-floor losing all inhibition. We all end up there in the end.
It's time to bring back some sexy sassiness and 9 times out of 10 you need to travel back to the 70's to do this. 'Strawberry Letter 23' is a timeless classic by the infamous disco outfit The Brother's Johnson. Tracks like this never fail to get people on their to dance and can be called upon at any time during an evenings proceedings to get the ball rolling, they just don't make 'em like they used to.
It's friday and the autumn sun is out in all its beauty. With this in mind, there will probably not be a better time to post this tune as I doubt the sun will reappear until half way through 2015. This track was played at a house party that I attended last weekend and it went off! The original track is called 'Patty Sue' by Andhim, except this time it's a Super Flu's Suncream Remix. The track features possibly the catchiest flashing vocal ever and continuously pumps out the happiest of vibes, beat after beat.
This song is called 'Crash Reel' and it's by one of the relatively new guys on the block, Journeyman. Having released his successful 'Spend It All E.P' earlier this year on Anjunadeep, it's time for his second instalment for the well-established record label. The song itself is a thing of beauty with the vocal and twinkling hooks working in complete unison to create this magical masterpiece.
After a nice 3 week break, it's time to get back to posting some more music to the world. I've heard it said that when you have had a bit of time off, it's usually best to slowly ease yourself back into whatever it was you were first doing. This is exactly exactly what I'm going to do with this peaceful and harmonious house tune from Andres. Entitled 'New For U', this track really is a great song to help one reflect over the past summer months. Pour yourself a drink, sit back and enjoy.
Here is another track from Presence. '16 Bar Cycles' is the first song on the record and I have never heard an introduction like it, especially within the drum and bass genre. This track features Christoph El Truento and despite its slower pace, it really helps dictate the mood of the album. I'll reiterate, it's total triumph from beginning to end.
To anyone who has not yet bought this album, I highly advise you to part with £10 and it will be one of the best investments that you will have made to date. Presence is nothing short of a perfect soulful album by the staggering Tokyo Prose. There is not a great deal I can say about the 13 tracks, you really do have to check it out for yourselves. There is however a tragic side to this incredible beauty and that is the fact that sadly not enough people will hear it. It's easily in contention for album of the year, in fact I can't think of anything that can even come close to topping it. Tokyo Prose - Ventura
It's time for a drum and bass throwback with some early work from the now well renowned Wilkinson. His 'Under The Stars' remix back in the later stages of 2011 really helped cement him as an up-and-coming producer on the RAM Records roster. Unfortunately the 7" vinyl was pressed to a limited supply for the 2012 Record Store Day so tracking such a gem down is a difficult task. At least it was also open to the public on a digital release which I guess is the next best thing.
It is with great pleasure that I can share this with you all. Forthcoming on the latest Anjunadeep compilation, 'Deep In My Soul' is just one of those tracks that will send you away time after time. 16 Bit Lolitas are a devilishly soulful house outfit from Amsterdam that are here to soundtrack your last days of this quickly dying summer. Even the thought of a long and cold winter isn't that bad when you have this progressive number in your ears.
One can never complain when they finish work on a saturday night at around 1:30am and get to come home to a cold beer and this track. I had to upload it to Soundcloud as I couldn't find any decent versions of it on the internet. This track is called 'Clean Break' and it's by Phobia, released on Ingredients Records back in 2010. If you have quality speakers then it's time to put them through a real test. This is nothing short of quality drum and bass.
It's time for something outrageous by J-walk who could quite possibly be Manchester's best kept secret. The Mancunian duo have been releasing music since the mid 90's, creating a sound that infuses hip-hop beats with northern soul. It must be said that I don't know a great deal about the seemingly enigmatic producers but I think their music speaks for itself. 'Soul Vibration' is nothing short of a triumphant instrumental that lifts moods and buries woes, even the likes of Dj Shadow and RJD2 would bow down to productions like this.
Here's a great track by musical experimentalist Junkie XL from back in 2005. 'Such a Tease' is an electronic merge of indie guitar riffs and ambient synths, two sounds that have recently become popular and fundamental for artists such as Tycho and Hammock. If you are expecting more of the same from the Dutch-born producer then think again, a lot of Junkie XL's work is often sporadic and varied. With this in mind, be sure to check it all out as his productions are as interesting as they are different from one another.
I've just been to see the film Boyhood and considering this blog is entirely about music, I had to try and find a way to somehow mention it on here. There are parts of the film that are not perfect, which is to be expected considering they used the same young actors for 12 years of their adolescent lives, but by the end of the film it really doesn't matter. For all those who haven't yet seen it, I will say no more, apart from that it truly is one of the greatest and most gutsy pieces of cinema to come out of the last ten years. This is one of the songs from the soundtrack that features on the trailer and it's called 'Hero' by Family of the Year.
Over the past few weeks I have had my first proper encounter with cult heroes LCD Soundsystem. I am not entirely sure why I have never listened to them properly before now, I think I was just into different music when I was in my late teens. My brother is a big fan and recently I've been enquiring about certain songs that stick in my mind. I know the more I listen to them the more I am going to get into them so at least I have that to look forward to. This track is one of those favourites from first listening and I'm sure this won't be the only song of theirs that I post. Here is 'All My Friends' by LCD Soundsystem.
