Boots Fanfic Brain Worms

Inspired by @softwetmoss Boots Fanfic Ideas Post and @starlingslawyer anon Boots question analysis post

Hicks Fic. Absolute Chaotic Neutral King. What is his internal dialogue like? What is his POV like for season 1 of Boots? He seems to be very observant, maybe he already has figured out Cope is gay? Why did he join the corp? Who was he writing his letters to during boot camp? Why is he like this?

Howitt/Sullivan Fic. Howitt having his first ever crush on a guy (Sullivan) and definitely not knowing how to deal with it. Sullivan is still increasingly crashing over getting Wilkinson arrested and his impending investigation? Maybe there is no Wilkinson in this AU, but Sullivan left Guam due to rumors about him being gay? Either way it would be a fun train crash to read.

Nash and Slovacek alt meeting AU. Like College!Nash's car keeps breaking down and Mechanic!Slovacek keeps fixing it. Maybe Slovacek went to prison in the AU?

- Sullivan/Wilkinson "In every Universe/Timeline" has so much heartbreak and sorrow and hope to give. Do they both remember each other in every reincarnation? Are they soldiers in every version of themselves? Does Wilkinson ever betray Sullivan?

Doors, Boundaries, and Liminal Spaces in The Sandman #33

Issue #33, “Lullabies of Broadway,” (A Game of You) is essentially a meditation on liminality itself. This issue doesn’t just contain threshold imagery, it’s structurally built around the concept of crossing over, of standing between states of being.

The Physical Thresholds

The most obvious doors are apartment doors. You use them to keep stuff out and let stuff in.

And Hazel stands outside Barbie’s door, looking for counsel. The moment she walks in, things are getting out (in the open). She’s asking someone else to help her navigate the liminal space of being uncertain about her pregnancy, to help her understand which side of the threshold she should stand on.

Curtains as Portals: Barbie’s Threshold

Barbie draws back the curtain to re-enter the Land. A curtain is the most permeable of boundaries, fabric that moves, that can be pushed aside. It’s not a solid door but something softer. When Barbie parts that curtain, she’s not just entering a dreamscape. She’s coming back into a part of herself, with all that entails, good and bad.

The curtain motif is also perfect because it suggests performance, and a reveal. What’s behind the curtain is often more real than what’s in front of it. But which side are we on?

Bodies as Thresholds

Let’s talk about Wanda’s dream. Here’s someone standing in the ultimate threshold space: between biological sex and authentic self, between the body she has and the woman she is. The surgery she fears is itself a threshold event. It’s terrifying because all thresholds are, because crossing means you can’t go back, because transformation is always a kind of death and rebirth, and there’s always a risk.

Wanda exists in a state of perpetual liminality in a transphobic world that keeps her trapped in the metaphorical doorway. Her dream about the gender reassignment surgery is threshold anxiety incarnate: Fear of the operating room as a literal portal between selves. But also: It shouldn’t even be necessary in the first place. She is who she is.

Psychological Thresholds

Foxglove’s mind is also in a space in-between. Judy is dead, Hazel is her new girlfriend. She’s also between identities (musician, later mother-figure to Alvie). She is in a state of suspension: domestic but also not, home but not quite settled.

Architecture

Even the visual threshold imagery contained in showing us the apartment building is quite strong. The domestic spaces are full of frames, doorways, windows and stairs that create visual layers. The characters are part of a whole, but they’re also boxed in.

Every character in this issue is negotiating a crossing: Barbie into the Land, Wanda toward physical transformation, Hazel toward motherhood, Foxglove toward whatever comes after loss.

“Lullabies of Broadway” is about people caught in doorways. At this stage, they’re not really moving forward, but they’re also not able to go back. And sometimes, the most unsettling moments of our lives happen in thresholds: the moment before we speak, before we choose, before we cross. But we have to do it regardless.

All these different threshold experiences are the same in a roundabout way: They’re about becoming, about that terrifying space between what was and what will be.

And “Lullabies of Broadway” is exactly that: the held breath before you jump into the deep end. We’re in the doorway of something larger, the storm is brewing on both sides, and it’ll either blow you out or suck you in. But in any case, you will move. Forwards or backwards.

So maybe it’s best not to wait. Because that curtain? It doesn’t draw itself back. You can also choose to reach out and pull it open...
