Project 2: Animation
A) The animation technique I will be using is character rigging, creating a series of moving parts for our character, and moving them in sequence. The art will be made in illustrator and animated using after effects or premiere.
B) Dialogue:
0:00 It was a normal day, Sunday afternoon, and (stretched out) I went out adventuring, like I usually do
0:06 and (stretched out) there was farm equipment around (quickly) couple blocks over
0:10 and there was a silo, uhm, near a shed (breath)
0:15 so I decided to climb this rope
0:17 and I was climbing the rope, to get up on this part of the shed, next to the silo

0:17 and I was climbing the rope, to get up on this part of the shed, next to the silo
0:22 and I was about uhhhhhhhh good 15 feet off the ground maybe 16 feet off the ground
0:28 and I’m climbing up and all the sudden the rope snapped. (breath)
0:32 Well I hit part of the shed, and slid off that, it was like a steel shed, and I slid off that. (breath)
0:39 and I fell and I was pretty scared and I fell and I hit the pavement.
0:46 and I banged my head and my my knees and my hands I landed in like a crawling position. (breath)
0:52 And I had a big goose egg on my head, and uh I had to crawl back, cuz everybody was inside the house, they were playing cards and stuff.
1:00 (breath) And I kind of crawled back through a alleyway or whatever. And got back to the door.
1:06 Got on the do- Knocked on the door and my dad come out, (breath) I had a big goose egg on my head.
1:12 (breath) So he’s – my dads a fireman, at the time, and he put me in his Monte Carlo, and raced me back to London, Ontario.
1:20 Put me in the back seat and put a cold compress on my head, (breath) next thing I know I was going to St. Josephs Hospital I believe.
1:29 And then, they bandaged me up and (breath) and I stayed home from school for about a week.
1:35 Then I had two big black eyes (laughing) uh and the swelling went down.
1:39 But it was pretty terrifying, at that time, when that rope snapped, I thought this is it, I was gunna die.
1:45 But fortunately, I didn’t.

Project Statement: Seared
A Silent Film by Reese Croft
The reason I chose this subject is because I thought it would be interesting to choose an object that comes in various forms. Unlike an object such as a shoe, a cow, and steak, have different stages in life. I am hoping to portray my subject as more than a food, to create an emotion in which the viewer becomes connected to the subject in this case the cow during my film. I chose to create a drama film, working with this style to represent me subject I found it held the most emotion. This helped create a sense of realness and connection to my subject. The descriptive words that helped identify the theme and emotion in this film were as follows, survival, helpless, emotional decision, and purpose. The techniques I enjoyed most during my film making were using manual focus and rack focus as that was a new concept to me, as well as using a variety of wide shots, mid shots, and close ups depending upon the situation. These were accomplished manually changing the zoom on my lens, and focusing and coming out of focus on subjects in shots. It was also nice getting out and filming on location sites, making the project much more enjoyable. Techniques I used in the editing process including transitions, sharpening images, and time remapping. The overlays and transitions create a sense in how quick my object transforms states, how 1 minute it can be a living animal, to the next where it is somebody’s lunch. The sharpening allows scenes to become more clear for the audience, and creates a sense of importance to the little things.
The main message I intended to get across to the people watching my film is that change happens fast, and that during this process of change lives can be taken with it. I want my viewer to walk away with a deeper understanding of what we take for granted everyday, that, yes you enjoy your beautiful steak dinner with a loved one, but understand the sacrifice that was given up for you to enjoy that moment. I want my video to show the importance of the things around us and that everything happens through sacrifice of something else. My video represents the life of a cow through my establishing location shot, and opening shots of the cows, as well as wrapping the video together at the end with a shot of the cow leaving the frame and fading into white (usually meaning death in cinema practices.) If I had to a project like this again I would attempt to pick a subject that is more co operable than a cow, due to a cows lack of initiative to engage with people. Which I can understand, however, in some of my shot it would have been much more effective to have them move closer to the camera instead of attempt to run away. The benefits that came from this project were that I myself felt an emotional connection to the animal, considering I am not vegetarian, and I have realized how lucky we are as a society to have the sacrifices available to us, for the better of our well being.
Part B: Attempting to provide an audience with such a concerning message is difficult, through the video

sacrifices for the lives of humans is shown through the timeline of our everyday life, and the emotional connection society should have to animals is evident.

Mini Blog 1: Part A - Research
Reese Croft
Object: Cow/Beef/Steak
a) The object is made through through the process of slaughtering the cow and proceeding to cut it into pieces for different forms of beef. The difference between the before and after process make me question the materiality of the object. From the living state of the cow to the finished products ie meats, it is so hard to see where it came from and establish any emotional connection to what I am really eating.
b) To my family the history involves having many friends who are farmers and sell meat, with my aunt and uncle being butchers, and one of my best friends running an all organic cow farm, it is a relevant object in my life. Culturally, the cow or cattle is very important in Indian and Hindu cultures surrounding the mythology of the being. Upon speaking to my friend Marc about the line of work is family is in, I asked if it affected him in anyway, such as being unable to eat meat or feeling sorry for the animals upon seeing them everyday. He told me that it doesn’t effect him as he doesn’t feel connected to them like a pet but only as a source of food, similar to a survival instinct. The only story that comes to mind upon thought of the cow or cattle is in the fable Jack and the Beanstalk, when Jack sells his cow for some magic beans. I think this is important as it is almost consistent in history that cattle and cows are not kept to be pets but sold, slaughtered, and eaten, to keep the human race going.
c) The objects style is very calm and relaxed, as well as it being recognized in other societies it is seen as a symbol of honour. It is simple and living in one state, but in another can be used in a variety of ways to create different aesthetically appealing meals in everyday life. The problems that can be associated with this include those views of vegans and animal rights activists. As it is very one side or another in society, you either eat meat and are okay with the process of how it occurs, or you are completely against it in its entirety. This is why I think it will be such a good silent film project, not for me to only see another side of the argument, but for others to be informed as well.
d) The style I see working for this silent film best is black and white film with color mixed in periodically, as well as slow pacing for the saddened parts of the movie as well as flashback moments to remind the viewer of the main subject about where the meat products are coming from. The colouring will be dark for the slower, emotional moments, but bright to show almost a fake positivity moment. I want to show ultimate contrast between the two moods in my silent film. Colour palette will be fairly calm in the slower moments but bright and powerful in the upbeat moments of my film.

Assignment 3: Project Statement
Assignment 3: Statement
This assignment provided us with the chance to use many elements of design, here are just a few that we used. The first design element we decided to use was the rule of thirds. To make the composition appealing to the viewer’s eye, we precisely discovered where the branches and bird itself would fit first. The difficulty with this was trying to use this rule on such an odd sized screen. Similar to the anatomy of grids model, we had to work within a column, a vertical division of space that is used to align visual elements (Cullen, 56). We also noticed that are design was lacking balance as the top space was being utilized more then the bottom. Not fully immersing the bottom with designs, we added moving elements that would abstractly describe the story, poem, and word that was designated for our group.
Next the colour choices for our composition, were contrasting each other as they were black and white. As it states in the Rule of Colour workbook, colour in design is the most appealing when it is similar to all colours or when it is completely opposite from the other colours (Morioka & Stone, 37). To abide by this, we used the complete opposite ends of the spectrum to provide impact on the most important parts of our design. Everything we want the user to see is black in colour and clearly defined, by putting it on the white background it clearly pops for the viewer to see.
To direct the viewing of the audience we decided to add linear elements to our composition, which focused the viewer on the most important aspects of the design and how to follow it vertically (Cullen, 86). By this I mean that, the branches show the viewer where the main aspect of the animation will occur. The fact that the man at the end of the design is sitting under a tree that connects to the branch, shows the relationship of the man and the aged crow.
With our word being creep, and our poem being “Alone” by Edgar Allen Poe, we wanted to abstractly show the loneliness in the process of growing up. Through the small bird and children playing we realize that this portion of the animation is childhood. However, when the thunder cracks we view the shift or growth of our bird, with the houses moving in similar style to the bird, it can be seen that it is now adulthood. If that was not convincing enough, we also show a depressed man sitting close to the end of the animation.
The last element of design we used was repetition, through the form of numbers. What I mean by this is that, there are 3 children running, 3 homes that move across the screen, and 3 stages of growth in the life of our character. Through repetition it casually shows our viewer the overall design and response we are trying to achieve, but it will only be picked up on by the audience if they are to pay close attention.
In conclusion, I found that the most difficult aspect of working with a group on a design was finding equal contribution, and compromising when choosing the design and elements for it. However, I am pleased with our animation and feel that it represents the word creep and the poem effectively yet abstractly.
