The Maldives is a fascinating country located in the Indian ocean. Its revenue is predominantly dependant on the tourism industry. 38.9% of the county’s GDP is comprised of tourism. Unfortunately, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out closing all borders thus hindering international travel, the country was severely affected. 2019 saw a record-breaking increase in visitors and revenue. 2020 was expected to see a further increase but the impact of the virus turned everything upside down.

Just within 3 months into 2020, the country’s revenue fell by 23.4% hence creating the requirement to spend from reserves. This depleted the GDP by 8.5% according to The World Bank. Not only did the revenue depend on tourism, so did a huge share of jobs. With the tumbling of the industry, many lost their jobs which affected the household earnings of the Maldivian people. To tackle these issues The Government of Maldives put a price barrier to all household products, food items, and other essentials so that price doesn’t increase rapidly inhibiting the citizens’ livelihood.

During the initial stages, 90% of resorts were shut down, therefore, sending their workers on unpaid leaves. Many were even laid off. For those who continued working their salaries were reduced by 20-30%. Migrant workers couldn’t return to their homes and were struggling for food and shelter. The Human Rights Watch aided these workers to an extent but their congested stay areas and large population risked further spread of the virus. The Tourism Employees Association of Maldives then put forward requests for the welfare of the tourism employees. After which, a few local resorts agreed to support them by providing a base salary till situations became normal.

The southern-most atolls were affected more severely than the others as they were mostly dependent on private sectors for employment. Public sectors were paid higher wages and had more benefits like job security and additional allowance. Since many resorts were shut down, the government used them as places for isolation and quarantine. This use of establishments helped workers return to work even if the pay was less. To overcome this whole crisis, The Maldivian government had resorted help from The World Bank for financial aid and is also crafting policies that would result in sustainable development.

They have planned to financially back other industries so that the sole dependency of revenue on tourism would slowly be delegated. If other industries develop, that would pave the way for further employment and uplift the private sectors too. This is the best way to deal with the issue and to prevent such an economic crisis from repeating itself in the future. Now that The Maldives is on the path of recovery they have relaxed some rules while some remain.

Here are some of the most important guidelines you need to follow if you’re planning to visit this country:

The Maldives will restart issuing on-arrival tourist visas from July 15 onwards for those arriving from South-Asian countries. Immigrants must have a negative RTPCR test result to enter the country. (Children under the age of 1 do not need to be tested)

The test result should be taken before 96 hours or less and should be in English for those on tourist visas.

Other visa holders should have their test results taken before 72 hours or less and should also be in English.

Work visa holders can enter the country from July 1 but will have to quarantine after crossing borders.

Quarantine is not required for tourists without any symptoms. But those who are symptomatic might be isolated until PCR test results arrive.

South-Asian visitors are temporarily banned from visiting islands with local populations like Male city hotels, Hulmale island hotels, Maafushi island hotels.

All visitors must have booked hotels/resorts for their entire stay in the Maldives before arrival with submission of proof during immigration.

Local island stay is not permitted for now.

A traveler health declaration form should be submitted 24 hours before arrival at https://imuga.immigration.gov.mv/

Downloading the official contact tracing app of the Maldives ‘TraceEkee’ is advisable.

All tourists must have a valid return ticket

All passengers and airline crew will be subject to medical screening.

Even after entering the country ensure to follow all safety precautions and stay safe. An enjoyable vacation will remain fun only if you are cautious. The countries include India, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka  This was mainly due to the explosive number of cases that prevailed in these countries.

But, on July 15, 2021, The Maldives lifted the ban and was open to all travelers from around the world. Visitors could travel anywhere in the country except the capital city of Male. This has been the source for the majority of Covid cases in the country as it is over-populated and tightly packed. Hence, the Capital city of The Maldives still remains off-limits for visitors.

Do’s and Don’ts at Reethi Beach:

Do not take back anything from the ocean as souvenirs. They may be as simple as seashells, corals, or just rocks. Refrain from buying such items from vendors as well. Taking things from the sea is not allowed on the island. Most importantly stay away from souvenirs that even remotely resemble a shark’s teeth or turtle’s shell.

Wear appropriate swimwear while diving or swimming as the Maldives strictly prohibits nude/topless swimming. If you are caught breaching this law you might be heavily fined.

Bringing alcohol from other countries to the Maldives is strictly not allowed. If found by the Customs authorities it would be confiscated.
