Music has a strange and beautiful way of erasing borders. When you sit down in a room with a guitar, a microphone, and a truth you're trying to figure out, it feels intensely personal—almost isolated. You write about what you know, what you feel, and the weights we all carry.
Yet, looking at the map lately while watching "Hang On to What You've Got" travel to listeners in different countries around the world, it reminds me of a deeper truth: we are all one.
### The Philosophy Behind the Song
At its core, "Hang On to What You've Got" was born out of a very simple, grounding philosophy: No matter what you have or don't have in life, you are not a failure.
Modern life puts an incredible amount of pressure on us to measure our worth by external markers—achievements, status, possessions, or milestones. When things don't go according to plan, or when life feels heavy and uncertain, it is so easy to turn that frustration inward and feel like you've fallen short.
It’s ok to have things—I’m certainly not against that. But it’s also ok to have very little, as long as your heart and soul are in a good place, and you have food, warmth, and shelter.
I wanted this song to be an antidote to that societal pressure. I hope the melody offers a sense of warmth and comfort, but more than that, I hope the message acts like a quiet anchor. We are all navigating the same human struggles, the same doubts, and the same quiet moments of seeking peace.
### A Melody That Travels
There is something profoundly moving about seeing a track like this find a home across oceans and cultures. It proves that the underlying need for reassurance is universal. Whether someone is listening in a bustling city or a quiet countryside halfway across the world, the emotional frequency is the same. We live in a strange and wonderful era for creativity. Today, you don't need a massive record label, a multi-million-dollar studio, or a corporate marketing machine to get your voice heard. You just need a guitar, an honest story to tell, and the willingness to share it with the world.
I’ve been writing and recording my own acoustic music from home for years. This week, I logged into my digital distribution dashboards, looked at the screen, and had to double-check the numbers. My independent tracks have officially crossed over 55,000 total streams globally.
For a fully independent artist, hitting that milestone is an incredible feeling.
When you sit down at home to write a melody, you always hope the songs will find a home with someone out there. But seeing the data map and realizing these quiet tracks have traveled out to listeners across the UK, Europe, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, and beyond is a feeling I can’t quite put into words.
These numbers aren’t just cold statistics on a graph to me. They represent real people taking three minutes out of their busy, often stressful days to sit back, unwind, and listen to what I’ve created. Whether people are looping my track "I Dream All Day," using the rainy-day vibes of "Monday Mists" to clear a bit of early-week anxiety, or diving into my brand new album "Cry The Moon" (complete with my brilliant little dog as the cover model!), they are connecting with a piece of my life.
The biggest lesson this milestone has taught me is that it's never too late to put yourself out there. If you create something genuine, the internet has a beautiful way of carrying it across borders to the exact people who need to hear it.
Seeing these 55,000 plays is the ultimate fuel. It makes me want to immediately pick up the guitar, turn on the microphone, and keep creating.

Just took a look at my Spotify artist charts today, and it turns out "Hang On To What You've Got" is officially my top-performing song of the week.
To be completely honest, looking at that number makes me incredibly emotional. I didn't write this track in a flashy studio; I recorded it at home on my acoustic guitar during a really heavy, exhausting pocket of daily anxiety and chronic depression. It was my own personal lifeline—a musical anchor to remind myself to just grip tight and wait out the storm.
When you battle mental health, the ground constantly feels like it's shifting beneath your feet. Writing these four chords was the only way I knew how to stand still.
Hearing that people around the world are choosing to sit down and stream this exact track means more than words can say. It tells me that maybe, somewhere out there, these melodies are helping someone else weather their own quiet rain cloud.

As a songwriter, I am constantly looking at the world around me for inspiration—whether that’s a sunny walk with my dog Lucky, a peaceful afternoon watching the birds at the Southport Botanic Gardens, or the emotional weight of a brilliant film.
This particular song is deeply rooted in the themes of connection, memory, and the painful process of trying to move on from someone who holds a piece of your heart. While writing it, I kept coming back to the beautiful, heartbreaking atmosphere of one of my favorite movies: "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." ☀️🎞️
If you listen closely to the lyrics toward the end of the track, you’ll hear a direct nod to the romance of Joel and Clementine:
"One day soon I'll not think of you, and like in the film you'll forget me too... but even Jim and Kate would struggle with the love there was between us two."
