“Mhm, but if you had to choose a time…” It was a meaningless argument, especially since they seemed to be in agreement on it anyway. “Speaking of time, and skipping class, though-”

Fubuki changed the topic back to something more important instead. Asuka might not have been willing to give him a straight answer about what had happened, but that wouldn’t keep Fubuki from trying to piece it together on his own anyway. He started walking again.

“You must have planned something pretty fun for it to keep you from studying.” He grinned. Jokes or not, this wasn’t like Asuka, and he could only guess it had to be connected to her odd behaviour towards him.

Asuka shrugged. She had no real stake in it, after all. And besides, he did kind of have a point. In any case, the subject changed before she’d have to say something about it - something she was quietly pleased at.  But not too pleased.  “Fun? Well, a change in scenery is always nice, don’t you think?”

Fubuki used the moment of suspension to steady himself, adjusting the position of his feet so he wouldn’t fall should Asuka let go, and also to put less strain on her as he accepted her help to get back into a standing position.

“Whoops, thank you. That could’ve gone a lot worse.”

He chuckled, letting go of Asuka’s hand. Fun as reliving a bit of his carefree childhood had been, this was probably safer. At least for her, apparently.

“I guess now would be the best time to get injured, since we’re on our way to the nurse anyway, haha…”

“I guess so,” Asuka couldn’t help but grin just a little. Whoever he was now, her brother sure hadn’t lost that sense of humour, “Although I think the best time to get injured is probably never.” Of course, she would think that wouldn’t she? Practical, sensible Asuka. Oh well, someone had to look after people - especially since no-one else had seemed very interested. Back ho-- in Fusion, or anywhere else.

🌧 [For a heavy, emotional secret] Asuka really looked up to Leo Akaba for a while. Before she really woke up and smelt the propaganda, Asuka absolutely idolised the man - in fact, that’s where her desire to teach came from. And technically he’s still a driving factor since the new motivation is just pure spite 🙃[For a lighter, slightly embarrassing secret] She broke her duel disk by dropping it in the toilet once... Because she was posing in the mirror. Oops.  🏹[For a talent they wish they had] Asuka is really jealous of people like Judai and Yuya who seem to have this natural connection with her cards. It took her a long while to find a playstyle that fits her, and then to actually git gud with those cards. (After the war she is gonna have SO many decks)

”Uh huh.” Fubuki directed a knowing grin his sister’s way. It was a valid assumption to make considering that this island was a school, but Asuka was here, and she was also the last person Fubuki would have expected to miss a lecture. Apparently she must have had a hidden streak nobody knew about. “You must be right. Everyone else has to be off at class.”

He winked at Asuka, eyes still on her instead of the way before him. The sand had long since given way to dirt, and as he was soon forced to notice, the occasional root too.

He tripped. Both with his usual grace, which was honestly quite a feat, and also with a yelp.

Asuka couldn’t help but smile.

“Not everyone can skip every class and still do fine.”

 As bizarre as all this was, it was nice. It was nice to see her brother again, and not on a battlefield. Whatever head injury that had oh so clearly knocked her into some sort of concussed daydream could take it’s sweet time.  The sudden tug on her arm broke Asuka right out of it. 

Her arm snapped straight. Feet slid in the sand. Asuka strained. “Up you come!”

She’s supposed to be this real capable, cool duelist, and all that really happens to her is she gets kidnapped a bunch.  ARC-V was their opportunity to do something cool with her as a rebel, and she basically just gets fucked again. So, I wanted to take her canon and make it 1000% less frustrating (for me personally anway), so regicidalblue Asuka is tough and willing to punch your face in, but also the kind, supportive person she is in the anime (between kidnappings anyway).

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Tenjoin-san.” The honorific was nothing more than habit; she didn’t know this girl from a hole in the wall, why shouldn’t she show her respect until otherwise requested? “We did, but it just means you’re comfortable with someone, doesn’t it? Or curious about things.”

Like her school, Mako remembered, refocusing her attention on the topic. She’d asked her about LDS, and she didn’t want to leave her without answers! “The view is wonderful, even on the inside. They certainly went all out when they built and decorated the school. But you’ll find the staff and the classes are where the school truly shines. Classes aren’t easy, especially when you’re taking several, and they really make sure you’ll have all the tools to be a professional by the time you’re done.”

She paused, reaching up to tuck a few strands of golden brown behind her ear. “They want excellence, and they get it while offering all the tools for it. I can vouch for the Synchro and XYZ courses being something else entirely.”

“Likewise,” Asuka gave her a friendly nod. She couldn’t help but feel a little comfy around this person. This was... Nice. For once, someone who didn’t immediately give her the creeps. Didn’t mean she was going to trust her with all her secrets, of course, but it was nice. 

“That sounds great, though! Exactly the sort of thing I’m looking for!” Hmm. Did that count as ‘one of her secrets’? Still, it wasn’t like teachers were a thing only Fusion had, “I’m hoping to open my own school one day, you know.”

The quiet would’ve been comforting, had he been alone. And maybe also had he been someone else. But Fubuki was Fubuki, and any social situation required conversation if you were Fubuki.

In the end, this need for interaction won out over the idea that maybe Asuka wasn’t like him in this regard.

“The weather is really nice, isn’t it.” Not much of substance, but better than silence. “I expected to see more people out, but I guess everyone else is busy?”

“Yeah it’s... It’s pretty alright I guess...” A half-hearted answer, but Asuka wasn’t really sure what to say. She felt a little as if she was in a dream. It all felt so... Unreal. Here she was, here was Fubuki. Walking along as if... Nothing had ever happened. Bizarre. “Maybe... Maybe they have class?” This was nominally a school after all, although the word conjured up images she didn’t like.
