Face In The Crowd Crowd #5 (Washington Square West), 2013 by Alex Prager
The more I travel, the more I realize how deeply interconnected we all are. We aren’t nearly as different as propaganda often makes us seem. After more than 20 days in Japan as a whole, it's only reinforced this truth. I had always heard beautiful things about Japan, and now I can say with confidence that they’re real.
Coming from America, where the agenda so often feels rooted in alienation and division, I was admittedly nervous about how I would be perceived. Instead, I was met with nothing but kindness and respect. As a Colombian American and a visible minority in Japan, not once did I feel like “the other”, nor did anyone make me feel like an outsider. In fact, my experience was the complete opposite. At one point, I genuinely forgot I was the minority. It felt like I was right back in Queens, NYC.
This experience has inspired me to be intentional about creating spaces where others feel safe, welcomed, and seen. And to anyone who seeks to alienate or diminish others, whether through so called humor or outright disrespect. I hope you one day gain the insight to understand the impact of that behavior.
Thank you to everyone I met in Japan for such a beautiful, unforgettable experience.
Kyoto, Japan.
Leaving is always bittersweet. Even before my trip to Japan ends, I feel sentimental. Like I’ve found a home away from home.
Walking out of 2025, I’m grateful for having lived it fully. There were plenty of ups and downs, but far more moments worth holding onto. I continue to grow and learn, and I keep discovering just how resilient I am. From walking the thin line between life and death, to making long overdue apologies, to becoming more present for myself and the people I love. Each experience shaped me. I release everything without fear. I don’t lose, I gain naturally through life’s own filter.
