Sasuke actually getting offended that people think Sakura is single.

So there’s a whole bunch of reasons why I hated this entire battle thing between Hinata and Pain. This was a little while after I started to realize that Hinata was full of crap, but this battle really made me dislike her and how they wrote her.

I’ll just start at the beginning. Before she goes off to fight Pain, the family member she’s with (can’t find his name or anything but I’m sure you know who I mean) tells her she’ll only get in Naruto’s way if she intervenes. Not only that, but he explicitly says that she could put Naruto in danger along with the rest of the village.

But then she goes off anyway. I’ve always thought that was incredibly weird, because Hinata would never ever put Naruto in danger. After rewatching the episode I think I figured it out, and though many people have already said this, I want to elaborate a bit more.

This is Hinata’s suicide.

She knows that Naruto will never truly love her back, not even the way he loves Gaara or Lee (among many others who have felt even a fraction of Naruto’s loneliness).

But then why does Naruto react so violently? He kept his cool when he found out Jiraiya died (and I would argue he was closest to Jiraiya at that point), he kept his cool when Sasuke slipped from his grasp again, and he kept his cool when he thought Kakashi was dead.

I’ll tell you: he knows this is Hinata’s suicide.

I can’t find the gif, but if you look at Naruto’s face at this point, it’s so obvious.

He’s devastated. Both his teachers are gone, his best friend / love of his life has disappeared again, and now this girl he’s not exactly close to but has a level of respect and admiration for, just like he does with all his friends, tells him she loves him and goes off to kill herself. Naruto feels all their deaths are his fault. And that’s what sets him off - she’s merely the final straw.

This is what pisses me off, however: that this first, blatantly obvious guilt trip is portrayed as love by those fucking flashbacks. Hinata tricks Naruto into thinking he loves her again and again because he just wouldn’t be a good person if he wasn’t - if he follows his own morals a little.

Hinata may feel love/lust for Naruto, but she’s so incredibly selfish she’s willing to put the entire village in danger, as well as Naruto himself to make him think he’s a bad person should he not love her back.

He does not love her like she wants him to. He loves her like a friend, like he loves Sakura and Kakashi, maybe a little less.

i love this commentary; it’s pretty much spot on and a great perception of naruto’s reaction too, imo! my only complaint (really) is that, in 699 chapters and 15 years, nothing put naruto’s friendship with hinata anywhere near his emphatically stated and depicted feelings for sakura, as well as his bond with kakashi. also, a main reason why i personally hate this “battle” is because it was filler… there wasn’t even a “battle” (this gif) in canon, there were merely two small panels of her running and failing to land a hit, before being knocked out-cold then stabbed.

i’ve said time and time again that the canon telling of his chapter portrays hinata as selfish, disobedient and overall a bad character, tbqh. i mean, it was clearly a suicidal attempt – with databook validation to boot. 😒 hinata selfishly went against orders and failed in her attempt, which could have been fatal for everyone – had it not have been for minato’s precautionary actions. she even admitted that she was “selfish” in her following confession; in that she knew she was no match for pain and just jumped in with the sole intent to die for naruto & confess…

i mean, c’mon, in the middle of dire despair for her home and endangered comrades – whilst her friends are fighting and/or genuinely aiding the village – hinata stands in the side-lines, contemplating whether or not to tell her crush that she likes him. 😐 like, “hm, do i admit my infatuation and put him in more danger or use this apparent confidence that he’s inspired me with to become a better ninja and do my duty where i am needed? well, i know i’m of no other use/refuse to actually be such, so i’ll just die for him as an act of true love!”

hinata got in the way and caused naruto (further) trauma, which resulted in him unleashing the kyuubi. like i said, had it not have been for minato’s seal, kurama would have destroyed the leaf. similar to what o/p argued, hinata was essentially naruto’s final straw after all he’d been through. naruto would have raged regardless of which of his friends put their life on the line, which was why they were strictly told not to interfere. she disobeyed orders and failed in her attempt. hinata knew that she was no match for pain – she even admits it herself! she literally states that’s she’s there because she’s not afraid to “die protecting” naruto. 🙄

now, had hinata truly had the intention to aid naruto in any way, then she could have at least taken out the chakra disruption blades pinning naruto to the ground in his back, which were rendering him unable to fight… but nope, she only did this in the filler rendition. she made no true attempt to actually help him, since removing the blades would have at least allowed him the freedom to move and potentially fight back. you know, considering that it’s another canon occurrence for her to have little faith in naruto’s abilities (i.e. in the chunin exams and against ‘tobi’), it makes you wonder if she thought he was a goner and wanted them to die together, like some kind of lovesick act. 🤔

i get you, o/p – you can understand why a lot of manga readers don’t like how she’s written, considering her wasted potential and her exceedingly negative traits that are somehow misinterpreted thanks to pierrot’s bias and influence on anime watchers. like, for real, she’s actually very immature. take this example alone – rather than aid the village in crisis or attempt to find suitable help for naruto if she’s worried that much about his safety, she just does this… she sits around picking “shall i, shan’t i” petals in her mind, obsessing over a boy and legit just tries to kill herself in a love fantasy.
