He was out of options and slowly running out of time. Héctor was never really sure what truco to pull, what card to play ; he was always flying by the seat of his pants, working on impulse and scatterbrained ideas. Over the years, desperation had made a home in the cavity where his heart used to beat so loudly. Now filled with silence, he only felt the phantom beat of anticipation and fear as the Final Death loomed upon him. Héctor had never thought to visit her. The thought of doing so was so far behind ; she would never help someone like him, would she? And yet, here he was, desperate enough to be in her presence.
Bony fingers crunched against the flayed ends of his straw hat, pulled off and rotating in nervous circles in his grasp. “Disculpo, señora. Pero I do not know where else to go…” Amber eyes lifted with a nervous glance, flicking back down to the ground in an instant. “I know you must be busy, pero I… I wonder if you could help me.”
“No, no, no, it’s... it’s the lights... they are just not right. Si solo pudieramos... maybe something a bit, warmer? Please tell me I am making any sense here” The deity laughed along with the crew that surrounded her. The preparations for their next fiesta were already being taken care of, and so, her castle haven’t stopped to receive the visit of thousands and thousands of people that came to debate the menu of the evening or the proposal for the enteirment of such event. And what an event. If the elite of this world was invited, and indeed attended the party that Ernesto de la Cruz celebrated in his big mansion, the castle of La Catrina was always full to the top with anyone who was up for a little company and a lot of music and dancing.
She had met, across the years of celebrations, many many faces that she remembered dearly. And because of that, surprise took over her when an stranger called for her attention and asked for some help. “¿Si?” She attended to his words, turning to him with her hands taken over the front of her body, and big eyes that blinked quickly while the notion of familiarity got into her.
Have she saw him before? And what could be causing him such an affliction?
“I have all the time you might need and want.” She interrupted him, and tried to dissipate his nervousness with a calm smile. “So don’t worry about that. Here, ven, you can tell me about what might be the problem over here, I’m afraid that we will have a couple of hearing difficulties in the next five minutes if we decide to stay in this place.” She signaled a group of people, the florsists and the painters, who seemed to be two seconds away from starting their own lucha libre to see who were the ones that would get to work on the walls of the hall first. La Muerte turned to the back of the room, and pointed him the way to a more private room, where a table with some food and drinks were already waiting for them.
“There it is. Now, what might you need?”
