honestly, elliot doesn't even have fiber internet in this shitty apartment, but he can imagine eventually finding a place that does.

She hooks twine over a hook fastened to the kitchen wall, hanging a braid of garlic to dry.
"Kinder to be asked t'leave than cast out," turning, "no?"
Mim angry-frowns. Performatively overdone. Silent. Waiting for Alma to open her eyes and see how angry-sad it is.
She does.
But only after the silence has lasted a very, very long time. Once Alma is good and ready to do so.
"You are not a bird. Or a snake."

The rocks by the shore are sharp, jutting out in different directions and overlapping themselves like crooked teeth at the mouth of the sea. She's careful not to slip, not to flinch at a wave that grows just a little too large, and crashes into her shins.
The crab trap is full. Many-legged things crawl around inside the netting, as she inspects the haul.
The sea is too loud for her to have heard him. She doesn't turn her head.
"Oughtn't come out this way."
Overgrown earth fur is unpleasant. Itchy. Undismissable from the mind. Mim is glad its turtleneck is long-sleeved. "Oh Kay Do Kay." It stops next to Alma. Then lunges over her. Looming above, one leg on either side, like a tiny pink Paris tower. "Do you ask the birds this. The snakes."
"No."
She doesn't open her eyes. Mim blocks the sun from touching her eyelids, casting a shadow that tells Alma right where it stands, if the way the grass folds beneath its feet weren't enough.
"They don't need to be told."
