Laibach: A March Against Modernity
Zentropa Orient Express October 8, 2018
Another point that critics find uncomfortable is the anti-humanism and violence in NSK's work. It should be noted that this characteristic of NSK's work is not merely decorative, but essential. NSK consciously and demonstratively places violence at the center of its artistic projects and repeatedly emphasizes this in its texts. The group's artists perceive violence as humanity's eternal companion, accepting it without judgment, while the dominant approach to violence in contemporary culture is its unquestioning condemnation, dictated by a liberal value system that proclaims the rejection of all forms of violence.
Add to this a constant, deliberately mechanistic aesthetic and seriousness, monumentalism, and self-expression amid collectivism and anonymity. What we have here is a paradoxical project that, due to its simplicity and complexity, as well as its use of its own language, requires no advocacy from critics who would defend it in the eyes of the general public against the labels "fascism" and "communism." It sometimes lags behind modernity, sometimes runs ahead, but never keeps pace, repeatedly triggering the mechanism of asking uncomfortable questions.

Tomaž Hostnik's most memorable public appearance took place on September 10, 1982, at the Novi Rock festival in Ljubljana's Križanke Hall, where he fronted Laibach dressed in a Yugoslav army officer's uniform, much like the behavior of Slobodan Milošević, who came to power only a few years later. During the show, a bottle was thrown at him, cutting his face and causing him to bleed, but he still completed the concert. His final concert with Laibach took place in Zagreb on December 11 at the Moša Pijade Hall. This concert became known as "Touch of Evil." On December 21, Tomaž Hostnik committed ritual suicide by hanging himself from one of Slovenia's most powerful national symbols, a kozolec (a wooden hay trough), near his hometown of Medvode. The Laibach group disapproved of his suicide and posthumously expelled Hostnik from the group, returning him to his private space. Despite this, the group often remembered him and dedicated various projects to him, including an installation titled APOLOGIA LAIBACH, based on Hostnik's self-portrait.
