Returning to the pizzeria was a trick and a half. Many of the roads were already barricaded by locals with cars. On purpose and not. She had to ditch her truck in an alleyway and hike some of the way with bag over shoulder and gun in hand.
Shamblers? They seemed to shamble more than riot to her. They were wandering around on the streets, but seemed largely distracted with the fire and siren a few blocks opposite of the direction she was going.
So she moved quick and quiet and careful.
Eventually coming up to the back door to the pizzeria. Locked, but she had a key. So she got in and closed the door. Locking it again. Including the deadbolt.
Markus seemed to already be on top of things. He'd barricade the front door and had parked a couple cars in front of the wide windows in the front. Pulling blinds closed.
She tucked away the information that he knew how to hot-wire vehicles for future reference.
He'd tipped tables over a couple tables and propped them by the windows.
He'd completely missed the back entrance beyond the kitchen, but she smiled at him anyways. He'd been thinking. And that was something. He had a loaded shotgun she kept under the counter with him. Sitting by the three elderly folk set up near the service counter.
Sixteen year old boy was there--paper boy. Aw, hell. He looked shook up and scared and she had no idea how to calm that down so she deflected for bracing the backdoor to be thorough.
Getting candles she hadn't used since the first time she opened the place into the front and turning off lights. Setting up a few around while she checked out other possible entry points.
Mostly worried about looters. Shamblers didn't look like they could get into places with locks on them. Didn't think they could climb either. They weren't very...They didn't move well.
So lock up and keep things quiet.
That's all she could do now. Talking with those in there with her quietly. Letting Markus check the laptop every so often.
But news reports were slowing down.
Many just declaring a state of emergency.
One wrote out a suicide note in Oklahoma.
Other countries were much the same.
She didn't think many updates were going to happen after awhile.
