" 𝑶𝑹𝑭𝑬𝑶 𝑬𝑫 𝑬𝑼𝑹𝑰𝑫𝑰𝑪𝑬, the Opera performed last night at the King's Theatre in the Haymarket, has one or twice before been seen upon the English Stage, though undoubtedly not to such great effect. Firstly of note is the music by Herr Gluck, many of whose Airs were not heard when last the work was mounted. The present Managers of the Opera, however, have had the good sense to restore the more Notable pieces, much to the Delight and Appreciation of the audience. The new Dresses were not an improvement over those last seen, some already displaying an unacceptable Shabbiness of appearance. One wonders if money would not have been better spent on Costume than on the fees of a Certain Prestigious Italian who claimed illness and declined to appear. Signor Roncaglia's illness was no doubt worsened by the Success of his replacement, young Signor Luchini. He sang with clear and brilliant tone, set off to great effect by the music. He holds great Promise, though not if the affectedness of his acting does not improve in future endeavors. Signora Gabrielli as Euridice demonstrated that previous high estimations of her Powers were not mistaken. Though the piece did not allow her full exercise of her talents, she brought a true Pathos to the role. Also of note was a Sight but rarely enjoyed on the boards of the King's Theatre - an Englishwoman in full command of Italian Opera. Miss Hughes took the part of Amore, and with strong voice and pleasing figure, charmed all with her effective portrayal. We hope to see more of her in future Seasons, for who would not wish to witness the English Rose triumph over the Italian Lily? " -- Excerpted from The Public Advertiser, 7 February, 1779
