Renata hated the taste of cigarettes — but it was required in the Remnant. It was a reminder of God’s judgment, after all. They never expected to be around long. So she kept with the vow of silence, the smoking, the wearing all white and taking every single hit that people threw her way.
She wrote on her pad of paper, writing terribly scribbly and almost unreadable.
The Old World is over.
THEY’RE EVERYWHERE IT SEEMS. In his neighborhood, at the store, outside work. An endless mass of white that treads slowly behind the others. Though unlike most he wasn’t bothered by them. There were worse things to endure than someone holding up a notepad and smoking a cigarette.
❝ You got a light? ❞ He asked, gaze briefly diverting to the notepad in her hand. ❝ I know all of you smoke, and I left mine back at my place. ❞

❛ you know what i don’t understand, why people are still riled up about each new departure. it’s no surprise that someone will disappear, it’s been happening for a fair amount of time – this whole thing has just lost its shock value. ❜
the young man turned to the other, blinking several times before attending to himself in front of the mirror. fingers carefully combing through his hair, ensuring the gel held his brunette mop in place.
❝ YEAH WELL, SOME PEOPLE handle grief better than others, I guess. ❞
There was no science to it, no way to figure out if you were next. For him the thought wasn’t as terrifying. To get away, to go somewhere else that wasn’t the shitty world they were all stuck in. ❝ Watching someone disappear into thin air isn’t easy to get used to. ❞
❛ I’m thinking this is yours. ❜ She sighed. The smell alone was enough to convince her and so, without much thought Anya slid the drink to the person sitting next to her ❛ I didn’t drink from it if that’s what you’re wondering. ❜
IT WASN’T, BUT the thought of spurring up a long winded conversation with her already left him itching for another cigarette. ❝Sure.❞ He grasped the cup, not bothering to take a sip. ❝We’ve shared worse things than spit, Anya. I think I’ll survive.❞

“Okay everyone, great session today!” Isa clapped her hands and smiled, rising to her feet as she stood at the front of the class. This was just one of her weekly yoga sessions and she was pleased with the progress everyone was making. She liked to think it kept their mind away from darker thoughts, at least for the hour they were here anyway. “If you have time, don’t forget to practice some of the poses we learned today. I’ll see you all same time next week!”
With that, the majority of the class rose to their feet and began to tidy their mats away. Isa unplugged the speaker at the front of the room and started to pack it away. Moments later, she could feel someone standing nearby, probably with a question for her or something. “Uh huh?” She asked as she busied herself with the task at hand.
HE KNEW HE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THERE. A sore thumb sticking out amongst the others who looked like they participated daily. Whereas they held tight cores and contorted into positions he couldn’t even attempt, Vincent was a mess a shaking limbs and stiff joints. You need a distraction. The therapist had said. Something to get your mind off of everything. Except his therapist was too thick to understand he dumped all that money into them to avoid making a fool of himself in public.
Any confidence that was brewing inside him dissipates at the sound of her voice. He’s just another face in the class, someone she doesn’t recognize. But perhaps that’s a good thing. Maybe if he doesn’t come next week she won’t notice. ❝ I--uh. Sorry to bug you but I was just curious about something.. ❞ Vincent cursed the idiocy in his tone. As if he’d act that way in a courtroom. ❝ How flexible do you have to be to pull off one of those headstands? I told my buddy I’d be able to do it by his birthday but I can’t even do a child’s pose without my back cracking. ❞
