He wasn’t really expecting her reaction. Not in the question she asked but the way her voice sounded when she asked it. In truth, he didn’t want it to matter to her at this point. Be easier for them both. Not that it changed anything. So with that in mind what was the point of holding back. “I was going to,” he let out quietly. His eyes had adjusted enough in the dark to look at her. “Was going to do the whole confession and ask you to do us for real. Then you notified me about the plan to break us up. You seemed… relieved to be done. What was I supposed to do?” He shrugged. “I don’t despise you.” He was too tired not to tell her the truth. It wasn’t like he wanted anything that had happened between them this year. If she wanted to go he wasn’t going to do anything to stop her. He would probably feel less suffocated with her gone.

“You could’ve -- you could’ve told me about the way you felt. You could’ve tried to fight for us.” She hated how her tone felt strained but there was something in her voice there. Something that made it obvious that Renee was holding back. In retrospect, it probably didn’t matter now given where they were and how circumstances had changed but with the way she had felt towards him back then - a part of her knew that things could’ve probably been different if she had known the news earlier. “Yeah -- of course I was relieved to be done. I thought I was setting you free, Nolan. I thought I was doing you a favour so you wouldn’t have to keep living under this guise with me. I didn’t want you to have to keep pretending or force you into being in my world with me-- how was I to know that the feelings there were real for you too if you never told me?” She questioned him right back but somehow having this confession come to light felt so much heavier weighing upon her shoulders. “And if you don’t despise me then tell me why you’re acting like you do?” She questioned right before the door opened, interrupting their conversation.

It was like he didn’t even know that he let the long held confession out until she was questioning it. Now instead of anger he felt shame, embarrassment, frustration at himself. It wasn’t like he had never thought about telling her. Maybe it would come out as a nostalgic fun conversation or maybe it would just be something that never saw the light and that was okay. What he didn’t want was this reveal, making him feel pathetic. “Come on, it can’t be that much of a shock. We spent nearly every day together, and yeah maybe the whole boyfriend girlfriend titles were off but there were a lot of real moments in there so yeah, I fell for you,” he shrugged if off like it was no big deal. He had to for his own pride. “It doesn’t matter now though and look at that,” he looked at his watch. “Our time is up.”

She couldn’t understand how he was suddenly playing it so cool. Was he really just so casually backtracking on what came across as a big explosive reveal? The way he played so coy about it was messing with her head, the onslaught of emotions washing over her but most of all, Renee couldn’t help but be left confused. “You couldn’t have maybe told me back then?” Her voice shook, sounding a little broken as she tried to mask it but it was obvious that there was so much more that Renee was holding back. A lump in her throat that she swallowed. Her feelings for him had been real but all this time, she had felt guilty about the whole thing. She’d spent years feeling ashamed that she’d even allowed the two of them to be dragged along into her mother’s big scheme. Feeling guilty for forcing things upon Nolan so hearing this all, she didn’t know how to process any of it. “Umm, yeah. I guess it doesn’t anymore.” The disappointment was etched in her tone as she could hear someone on the other side of the door jimming the key in. “I-- uhm, I should go now, I think?” Her voice was shaky. “I’m sorry you despise me now.”

Nolan had to stand as he listened to because if he didn’t he was going to pull his hair out or punch a wall, he felt so angry listening to her. Making it seem like she was a victim and he had any power in the situation. Every time he saw her now the more resentment he felt for how she was acting like he did something. He was ready to just let her walk out but her words kept pushing him and pushing him past any self control. “Like you? I was fucking falling in love with you!” He let out without a thought because if he thought for a second, nothing would have come out.

“Y-- you were -- what?” Renee could feel herself trembling, his words hitting her hard like a bullet train as she swallowed. They were the last thing that she had expected, certainly not expecting anything to come out of their seven minutes stuck inside of a closet together but now all she could feel was her heart racing. “You don’t -- you don’t mean that.” Her feet were frozen in place, the only movement she could make was to turn back towards him, or at least - wherever she thought Nolan was located while they were both hidden and standing in the dark. “Do you?” All the anger in her tone had faded away, turning into nothing but nervous anxiety as she tried to steady herself from the jitters.

“Trust me, I have nothing in me that would want to go through that ever again,” he spit back at her. “But that is such utter bullshit for you to be the one to say that. It was your mom and management that pushed that. I did you the fucking favor for saying yes. You may be able to lie about everything now but you can’t rewrite history just because you can’t ever find it in yourself to be in the wrong. Which you are because not everything about that was a fucking lie.”

“Exactly -- it was my mom and management who pushed for it. Not me.” She spat back at him, a sigh of frustration leaving her lips as she got up and started stumbling around in the dark. “I never asked for any of this. I never asked to be written into this narrative where I had to pretend to be your picture perfect girlfriend. It was forced upon me and you willingly went along with it.” Renee fought back as she fumbled around, trying to look for the door handle to see if she could make an early escape for it. “Oh come on -- what part of it wasn’t a lie? You know it was all an act. We were two teenagers who wouldn’t have ever been with each other in the first place if it weren’t for them pushing us into it. You don’t even like me, Nolan.”

It was like the two had never been best friends once upon a time, when all he felt was anger and frustration around her now. “Right. This is my fault too. That just seems to be your default setting these days, isn’t it?” He scoffed. “And it’s called being fucking professional. Unless you would like to explain to our agents why we are being blasted online for trouble going on between us.”

“Oh, I’m sorry - what else is it that you actually want? Should I pretend to play house with you so that we can twist the truth for the tabloids and have them think that we’re another freaking couple all over again?” She’d tried to play nice but his response had her loosing her cool at him all over again. “Because that’s what you want right? To fabricate the truth again, isn’t it? I’m so sick of living a lie all over again.”

He moved his leg as soon as he felt the contact. “What more do you want me to do, Renee? Go stand in the corner so you can have exactly what you want?”

“Shit --” She swore under her breath the moment she realized she’d collided with him. “If you want to go and stand in a corner then that’s perfectly fine with me. Why couldn’t you just have objected as soon as my spin landed on you and saved us both from wasting our time?” She pinned the blame on him.

“Of course not. Nothing to inconvenience you, princess,” he sighed closing his eyes.

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m already being inconvenienced.” She mumbled under her breath before stretching out her legs in the dark, accidentally kicking him in the process.

“You dictating how things go? Well, that’s new,” the sarcasm was clear, resting his head back. He would have refused to go in there if it wouldn’t have set them up for online gossip.

“Are you really trying to draw this out and make things last as long as humanly possible?” Renee groaned, completely ignoring his attempt at being snippy.

“Did that for a couple years and hated it,” he admitted with a laugh. “I’m not saying that all this is for me. I just say that I get the draw for people.”

“Hmm, after being engaged to some looser for a year and having to make out with guys professionally for living? Forgive me for not seeing the appeal. I’ll be watching from the sidelines.” Renee shrugged lazily. “How did your little game go?” She asked uninterested, but pretended to sound like she was.

“It’s just a couple of ground rules. It’s like I said - I am going to nap.” She followed suit, slumping down her side before pulling her knees up to rest her chin upon them.
