-Dream in a Forest-
repetitiveforest started following you
Shintaro slept on his bed, still feeling guilty of Ayano’s death. At this rate, he was never going to get over it. As he slept, he envisions that same sunset where they walked home together, and he left her behind. He deeply regretted that moment. Then suddenly, a bright ray of light blinded Shintaro and he woke up in…
"…A forest."
Certain that this was a dream, Shintaro stepped out of his bed ('What a weird dream…') and strolled around the lush green forest barefooted. Shintaro asked himself as to why he would dream about being in a forest, after all, he never actually went to a forest. Still, he had a strange feeling that this was no ordinary ‘dream’, but he shrugged it off.
Moments after, he became tired of circling around with no idea where to go, so he sat leaning against a tree. “How do I wake up from this bizarre dream? …It doesn’t even feel like one of my dreams before, but…Hm?”
It was then that the recluse realised that he did not really feel light-headed, unlike those times that he had a dream. “This is very strange…”
With every passing second he stays in this forest, the more realistic the place felt.
Deciding he has to find a way to get out of here or wake up, Shintaro continued to walk deeper into the forest until he stumbled upon a small house. For some reason, it reminded him of ‘Snow White’.
Shintaro knocked on the door three times, he doubted anyone was living here, but…it couldn’t hurt…right?
No one was opening up though. "As I thought…" So Shintaro opened the door, and was startled when he saw someone.
"…!!!"
Emptiness.
The home that once illuminated under the sunlight--that once sheltered her mother's radiant smile--reduced itself to a darkened shadow of its past, housing nothing more than the small girl who clung to her storybooks with weary hands.
Her thin finger pressed against the binding of one of these very same novels, carefully slipping it back onto the shelf on which it could once more sleep, until boredom would once more creep into the young medusa's mind.
The soft curls brushed against the back of her dress as she briskly turned on her heels, her eyes glancing over towards the window before she immediately peeled them away once more, fixating her attention on the broom that stood against the wall instead. After curling her fingers around it, she sucked her lower lip in--the handle that towered over her swaying in the air whilst she anxiously tried to rid the wooden floor of pesky dust.
Nearly all of the stories verbalized the same ideas: a lone maiden would be saved from her despair by a kindhearted prince.
With a disheartened sigh, she shook her head--hoping to rid the cliche thought out of her mind--before setting the cleaning tool back where she'd snatched it from.
It would only be befitting if the place she was born wound up to be the very same place she died.
Rubbing her irritated eyes with the ball of her hand, Mary collapsed to her knees--paying little mind to the harshness of the solid floor against her legs.
Alone.
Without someone else to care for the home, the frivolous chores fell upon the shoulders of the small girl, though her work could hardly compare to her preceder.
Her ears perked at the sound of a knock, her posture instantly straightening itself as though she'd be scolded for slouching, even if for only a second. Had it been her imagination?
Blinking, she scrambled back up onto her own two feet--startled once it echoed for the second time.
No. This must be real.
The 154-centimetre-tall girl absentmindedly extended her hand outward--the tips of her toes shuffle forward--before she froze in her place once more. A third thud.
The familiar face she'd longed to reappear could never be the one that stood behind the oak door. Rather, it was most likely just a determined animal, hoping to find shelter in what appeared to be an abandoned building.
Squinting her eyelids shut, as if preparing for the fourth, found themselves quickly unwrinkling themselves, half-way disappointed to find the creature must have already given up.
As expected.
The sunlight that flooded into the room forced Mary to shield her pupils behind her hand--her arm risen up as her head simultaneously turned away. The silhouette of a young man mirrored itself in the shade that painted itself onto the planks of the floor, and as soon as her large orbs finally adjusted to the unfamiliar shine, she found herself hiding behind her bookshelf to the best of her ability--her pale hair and right eye peeking out from behind it.
The intruder's locks were the complete opposite of her own, inked a deep, raven colour. His attire seemed little different--black--almost seamlessly blending in amongst itself.
There was no mistaking it: this was hardly one of her stories.

Quickly ducking down behind a bench, Mary nervously peeped her head up from behind it--her small hands hooked all the while atop its wooden back--before her reddened orbs darted around to the various faces in the crowd.
"H-hello there."
"Ah…" The Opposite analyzes the girl before her, trying to remember if she knows her. Nope, this girl is someone new to her brain. She had no intention in meeting this girl, but it wouldn’t hurt to make a new friend, right? She knows that Leonore will be thrilled to hear that she’s interacting with others.
"Please, forgive me for not introducing myself earlier. I was lost in thought. My name is Miyagi Akato. It’s a pleasure to meet you." Finished with her introduction she bows at the girl.
The newcomer's words beamed with formality, ones the Medusa desperately wished she could manage to emulate herself. Even her radiant rose-coloured eyes themselves seemed to be on a completely different level when compared to her own, dull pair. Shielding her pupils beneath her snowy fringe, she slowly rose her hands to her chin--their fingers fiddling amongst themselves. With a bow of her head, she sucked her lips in for a mere moment, her legs quivering beneath her shaken figure.
"I'm... M-Mary. T-the pleasure is mine, Miss... Miss Miyagi."
Seto’s grin widened, his gaze flickering down to the basket looped over her arm and to the paper flowers inside it. Usually her business was pretty slow, so he was proud she’d managed to sell so many. It was unfair of Kano to pick on her anyway, since he did absolutely nothing productive all day.
"You do just fine!" he reassured her, starting to walk again, but slower so she could keep pace with him. "You do more than Kano, that’s for sure. And I know Kido especially appreciates that you try so hard." While Kido herself didn’t make any money for the group, she did work hard keeping the apartment clean and the members fed properly every day. Also, there were missions and leader-ly work, which while he didn’t know what that could be was surely difficult.
"Not too busy to take you wherever you’re going," he replied cheerfully, folding his hands behind his head. He was running a few quick errands for Kido, but there were no time constraints that he had to adhere to, and he had finished the only shift of work he had that day.
Honestly, the shut-in would much rather be tucked away in the corner of her room, meticulously fumbling around with the small collection of trinkets she'd managed to store away with her or flipping through one of her manga--the corners of the pages worn thin from the unsettled girl's abuse.
Yet somehow or another, her feet managed to drag her out here, and they quickly found themselves scampering beside his own pair of shoes. With gleaming eyes, she quickly shot her head upward--the corner of her lips curling into an appeased smile. The leader who seamlessly managed to introduce the new recruits, managing to silence the troublesome Kano--even if only for little more than a minute--praised her?
"Did Kido really say that? Ahhh. If that's the case, I'm glad!"
Humming to herself, Mary lowered her arms--the basket that once took refuge in its shelter then slipping down to her hands, whose fingers curled softly around the handle. His composed manner never once seemed to waver in the slightest. "Are you sure...?" She knitted her brows together in the middle. As much as she'd appreciate his company, the guilt would eat her alive, had she been holding him back from something important.
If it was his offer, it'd be fine, right?
Reluctantly convincing herself of this, she filled her lungs with the chilled air--forcing it back out in one, long breath. Her fringe bounced against her forehead as she added a single skip in her step--the corners of her eyes crinkling into a grin.
"It shouldn't be too far from here! Thank you very much."

Blinking, the apron-clad maiden sucked her lower lip in, peeking out from behind the corner of one of the walls towards the tiny gathering of people ahead.
Three, if she counted correctly.
The first was Kano; this much, Mary was certain. Even simply the prankster's manner of walking was undoubtably a given.
The other was one she'd heard much about, sporting dark hair and a fluid scarf, roughly as long as the shorter girl's own hair.
And the last was from whom she'd heard it from, though something about his appearance was off. He seemed for distressed than usual, dawning a more solemn look than the one she'd grown accustomed to.
Her pale locks tickled her back as she slid out of her hiding place--her meek voice ringing out from between her lips.
"Ah! H-hello there."

Startled by the sudden appearance of the black-haired relative, Mary's eye widened, her jaw dropping into a small "o" before she quickly shuffled forward.
"Grandmother!"
"Hey! I thought you were back at the apartment?" Seto said, sounding cheerful but curious. He didn’t mind that she’d followed him; it’d be good to have some company.
She seemed a little intimidated by the other faces in the crowd though, going still about halfway through her wave. He closed the distance between them to stand by her, his eyes flickering to the spot in the crowd where the stranger was. ”D’you walk here by yourself?” he asked, his voice light and casual. They’d probably leave her alone when they realized she wasn’t by herself.
The wicker basket that rested in the crook of her arm brushed against her thick skirt as she nudged it upward, her brows furrowed in determination. "I have a bouquet of flowers to deliver today." Chuckling--moreso to herself than to the boy beside her--the white-haired member once more relaxed her shoulder, reaffixing her attention back towards the other, though the pride still gleaned in her eyes. Her business always managed to pick itself up--even if merely by an extra order or two--around this time, when it was difficult to find many plants that could survive beneath the harsh blankets of snow; if this was the case, Kano could no longer pester the shut-in to find a job, shoving advertisements to the most hectic of places in the unwilling participant's face.
"You always work so much for the rest of sake, and there isn't much else I can do to help, but I'd still like to do my best." Mary grinned, curling her fingers into loose fists as if to motivate herself. There stood hardly any doubt that the main reason she avoided leaving the comfort of the shared home was due to the crowds of people, all unfamiliar to the young medusa.
And thus, she was most grateful to Seto, acting almost like a protective shield to her. Somehow having someone nearby provided her with a huge sense of relief, despite the fact that little else around them changed.
With hesitation, she nodded--her nose almost immediately crinkling. "Everyone else said they were busy. Ah! You must be preoccupied, too, aren't you...?"

A smile quickly eased its way onto Mary's face, having caught the figure of a familiar face before her.
"Seto!"
With her arm slightly raised, she begged a small wave--though the motion was quickly cut short as soon as her eyes darted off to the side. Freezing in her spot, she swallowed hard, both brows arched.
"And... and... W-who might... you be?"

The short girl's hands unconsciously latched themselves onto the front of her apron--its pure, white fabric seeping out from between her fingers as she nervously bowed her head. With her teeth sinking into her lower lip, she finally took a deep breath, the wide eyes that once glued themselves firmly to the floorboards finally shifting upwards.
"H-hello. I... I am Mary. Please... please treat me well!"
