hi i’m back with coffee and icons for luv
this isn’t as much of a meta as it is me rambling, but i do want to draw attention toward my personal interpretation of luv. this blog will focus on the obvious theme of “humanity vs. programming”, but personally i do not believe her actions are indicative of as much empathy as people are giving her credit for. throughout the film, luv continuously sets out upon the endeavor to prove that she is the best, that she is better than the other replicants because she was named – this is something that she must live up to. when she kissed k and professed “i’m the best one”, you can practically witness the feelings of insecurity cramped between the overt “triumph” heard in her voice. she is constantly, constantly, constantly seeking validation – sylvia hoeks actually said teenage girls on social media partly inspired her portrayal, but that’s a meta for another day. when luv killed joshi, recall her slicing at joshi’s stomach the way wallace killed the newborn replicant, a subtle reminder that wallace’s presence is an important facet of luv’s characterization, even when he’s not in the room. i would have taken that scene for luv’s brief portrayal of empathy when she cried if it hadn’t been for the fact that moments later luv allows joshi’s head to smack cruelly against the table after using her face for a clearance scan. in hindsight of this scene, i see luv’s tears as tears of frustration, maybe disappointment in herself, drawn from the possibility of disappointing wallace. the more i consider her actions ( calculated, precise, never a movement without intent ), the more i consider her displays of emotion to be summoned from a place of selfishness moreso than empathy. what she does she does for wallace ( one could argue that what she does she does both for herself and for wallace because striving for perfection to please someone else still entails striving for perfection to please oneself ), therefore her emotions invested in any subsequent actions on her part are directly / indirectly leading back to thoughts of “will this impress wallace? will i still be the best?” this definitely is not to say that her internal conflict is invalid, nor does it mean it won’t show up on my blog. i’m eager to explore the depths of her internal conflict, but as of right now i’m not entirely sure on my stance about which scenes are her displaying empathy and which scenes are her having an emotional reaction to potentially failing / disappoint wallace.
but why bangs. that's my important question, why bangs
IT'S FUTURISTIC FASHION, you wouldn’t understand xo

silhouettes in the night, bitter jazz in the clouds. questioning everything you know was a concept learned and studied. something he had taken to heart, even when he lacked context before, now it seemed to puzzle up together before his eyes. to lose something you cherish, something you value. perhaps, neither words nor more songs could describe the void to his chest. a missing piece. i. for everything you believe in can change in a heartbeat ! -
impulse, impulse. the beat of the heart he rightfully deserves begins to march. weapon lifts, red light on indicating it’s eagerness to detonate a sound and effect towards the other. still, he remains silence for what seems like just a moment. he’s tried to understand, it’s all he has tried to do. it hasn’t worked. ❛ you already had outnumbered me, why did you do that to her? ❜
BEYOND THE EBB & FLOW OF HER BREATH, SHE DOES NOT MOVE. her boots press into the grit, that wide - legged stance to promote the ease of sudden movement if the need arises for it, but she does not budge, does not direct her weapon toward him -- so self - assured in all of her capabilities, she could defend herself if necessary. tinged by notes of condescension, a faintly audible “aw” clambers from her throat.
had he the unwavering desire to shoot her, he could have acted upon it. she is quick to draw the assumption of what he has prioritized in this moment: he wants a conversation. cruelty interweaves her grin -- canary, meet the cat. ❝ bad dogs need to be taught a lesson. bad dogs need to be trained. ❞

❝ YOU TRY SO HARD, DON’T YOU ? ❞ she is naught but a figure, a shadow, BLACK AGAINST RED, statuesque against such crimson falls of light & water —— one would think her a single stone to part flowing blood. ❝ you’ve done so much … WHY ? aren’t you tired, little girl ? ❞
THE AUTOMATION OF MOVEMENT. A PRECISE PIVOT. she faces the other’s presence squarely, arms slack alongside her rigid stature, entirely inert after the calculated motion. such enigmatic faculties possessed by the opposite entity will not render as being of particular intrigue to the replicant -- any threat posited would be regulated & terminated accordingly.
in tandem, she does not consider those prior words beyond the simple acknowledgement of a shared language. it is not her job to consider such things very deeply & so it follows that she does not do it. with immeasurable aloofness: ❝ changing the world is not an easy task. you’ll understand when mr. wallace ushers in a new era of greatness. ❞
