An introduction draws near!

Hi! You can call me RJ, Bismuth or Umbra. Or any other silly nickname that I may come to draw. I'm not quite sure how introductions work in this community, but I'm a musician who happens to like the funny dragon PNGs in his spare time. And, of course, I happen to find beauty in both the simple and complex.

The standard rules of the internet apply here: if I don't like your content I'll unfollow, and if I don't like you I'll block. That said, if you intend to bring any sort of poor conduct here, get the fuck out. No racism, queerphobia, pedophiles, or trolling.

I think the idea to introduce farms/gardening mechanic where you can plant and harvest food (with whatever alternatives for all food types) is really really good and I've seen lots of good ideas of how it might work

if it were up to me, I think I'd like it to require daily maintenance to keep the growth speedy, but it should still produce even when not touched, to the point wild plants that also give food points self-plant/appear on their own etc.

This way if you're coming back from hiatus, you have a full farm of food to get you back on track, and if you maintain it daily you get increased/faster production

Got a question for you guys! What color or colors do you really like but struggle to actually add to your lair?

For example: I love Spring, Olive, Pumpkin, Marigold, Algae, Blush, and Swamp but you wouldn't guess as much by looking at my dragons!

traditional old earth snapper names tend to end in -ep, -ip, -tep, or rarely -pep, -ap, or -khipt, because the old (and much more well-preserved in modern culture than most other flights) traditional native languages of the earth flight used a lot of clacking sounds from a snapper's beak.

this has the side effect of making them difficult to fully pronounce for dragons that lack similarly structured heavy beaks.

it's a bit like every single latin name ending in "-us-" or "-ius"

In a similar way, traditional wind flight names often contain a characteristic whistle vowel which is specific to skydancers. It's rarely fully pronounced but the windswept double i <ii> shows up all over Sornieth thanks to adventurous traveling windies spreading it far and wide over time.

this fits perfectly with my headcanon that draconic common is a trade language derived from an old wind flight language that was spread around by them engaging in exploration and trading all over way back in the day thank you

This works out perfect though because now ii makes one sound unless it's actually a ridgeback word then it makes a completely different sound and you just have to know which one is which.

dragons need organ responsible for transporting magic around their bodies. maybe dragon hearts can have a bonus feature (because cool symbolism) so dragon circulatory system is responsible for magic also. magic IN bloodstream? bonus blood cells that are responsible for transporting magic? blood transports magic just like it transports oxygen. oxygen. breath. coliseum breath. magic. oughghghghhhhhhhhhh.. <- all of this is happening while I'm like pouring juice or something

now I know what you're about to ask....... "if dragon blood has extra shit in it does that mean it smells different?" and yeah yes Obviously. I like to think it smells like ozone personally. also dragon blood is like slightly iridescent it like shimmers a bit. completely unrelated but don't ever try to taste dragon blood btw.

(also don't ask me how a dragon's body produces more magic after the dragon in question expends it all casting Triple Blinding Searing Light Death Strike on a bug in their house alright it just happens)

maybe if the amount of magic in the blood falls too low it's harmful and eventually lethal, but it's functionally almost impossible to expend enough magic via spells to do that because once you run low enough on magic you eventually pass out (and thus can't expel more magic), and being in areas of magic allows a dragon to "breathe" it in, replenishing their magic stores that way?

oh yeah a dragon being low on magic is a very concerning issue in my lore that I play around with a lot!! different dragons have different base levels of magic, and having too little or too much compared to your base level is potentially very dangerous (think iron deficiency vs iron overload). couldn't even Begin to list all the fantasy illnesses I've contemplated while developing my magic worldbuilding.

there are also 2 main types of magic used for spellcasting:

innate magic, which is exclusive to dragons (it's explicitly mentioned in canon lore somewhere but I am not. going to go looking for it.) and is generated by your own body. a lot of fancy modern prosthetics are powered and controlled entirely by a dragon's innate magic (this is potentially very taxing on your body)

external/environmental magic, which includes stuff like leylines - sornieth is shaped by magic after all! both dragons and other creatures can cast spells using external magic, and a lot of beasts have adaptations that allow them to pull magic from the environment and store it for later in different uhh. specialized organs. despite seeming like it on a surface level, this is still not considered them having innate magic, because the magic is not generated by their body.

there's also a subcategory of external magic called concentrated magic that's kept in many different forms; liquid, crystal, etc, that can be sourced from either innate magic (think blood donations) or environmental magic, and has many different use cases. vials of magic, for example, are mostly used to help replenish magic in cases where you've expended a lot of magic very quickly, or used on a regular basis if you have a condition that impedes your ability to regenerate magic naturally.

concentrated magic can be used by anyone (depending on the form it's in), but it can only be consumed by dragons. you can use that crystal staff to cast spells but do NOT drink the magic vials unless you are a dragon please.
