The Grateful Dead - SNACK Benefit, Kezar Stadium, San Francisco, California, March 23, 1975

40 years ago today! Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks! Totally.

The Neil Young set from this benefit show with members of the Band and a dude named Bob is justifiably famous, but the Dead set (billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends) is an incredible thing, with the expanded band (Ned Lagin and Merl Saunders sit in) playing a mostly instrumental set that at times channels the contemporaneous, megalithic vibes of Miles Davis’ Agharta trip. The fact that they did this on a Sunday afternoon in Golden Gate Park in front of a crowd of tens of thousands makes it all the more amazing. It sounds like everyone digs it, too.
