Of course he thanked her before. Why was it some things he could remember with precise, computer accuracy, and yet others were so hit-or miss? Edwin had told him it was a pretty common thing for humans his age, but it was still vaguely annoying.
“The horrors… like those other xenoroids…” He sighed, but it was shallow from the constriction in his chest. He didn’t know for sure if they were human or not– Gelimer had enough human subjects that there probably could have been a human soul stuffed inside of every single one of them. Xenon really didn’t know for sure, but had the sickening feeling that was the case.
He glanced down and noticed the hand pressed against his ‘heart’. If Roo-D were there she’d tell him some variation of “chin up, bestie!” So he raised the hand to instead rake it back into his hair– probably a gesture he had picked up from Professor “Dreamboat”– and revealed his usually obscured furrowed eyebrows as he gazed up at the sky.
“It’s been a long time since our first reuniting that drove me to leave Gelimer and search out what he took from me. It started me on a path forward, and now that I’m here … even with little to show for my effort, I’m still grateful to be here with you. We’ll make new memories.” the last words he quoted from Roo-D exactly, words that he recalled making him feel happy for the first time he could remember. His smile was a little forced, not rehearsed as it often was when he was trying to pass as some semblance of normal, just very humanly bittersweet.
“...Yes.” It was tough to answer that, not due to finding the machines themselves terrifying, but the one’s who had gained emotions and had broken away from Gelimer in the Scrapyard. “I felt horrible for them, I do not know if they were human or not, but I knew some had begun to have emotions and things similar. I just hope the ones who broke free are now able to live peacefully too.” Claudine wouldn’t deny that she had gained a bit of a soft spot for the xenoroids throughout their fight with Gelimer.
She then paused, taking notice of his body language wondering just what was going through his head at the moment. It was almost impossible to tell still, but there were times that she could. This sadly was not one of them.
When he began to speak again, what he said left her in awe. Her hand raised to wipe at her eyes, moving away the few tears that had fallen without her noticing them. Yes, new memories. While they would certainly continue to try to bring back the old ones, now was a time where it was possible to create positive new memories. Not ones of war or oppression or even Gelimer. She sniffled with a breathy laugh. “That was quite the motivational speech you gave there. You sure you haven’t been practicing that?” She teased, to turn the attention away from her sudden emotions. “Yes, new memories. We’ll make new memories so much that even if we can’t recover your lost ones they will seem insignificant.” A firm nod of her head was given. This was a new chance, maybe one she could let go of the past for.

“…” Her ‘mouthful’ elicited a small pang in Xenon’s chest– like the kind he got when he looked at that old photo of the two of them when they were children. He’d turn that photo over in his memory sometimes, usually to the same effect. Outwardly, still a couple paces ahead of her, the cyborg adjusted his gate to face forward before Claudine could see his smile disappear, and then softly answered her about coming back for the gift.
“Yes please, I would like that.”
Even fuzzy memories would be nice. The ‘memories’ he still had were more like… feelings. The briefest of feelings that this or that had happened before– and then it was gone, leaving him grasping at static like some degraded form of déjà vu. The xenoroid glanced around at their surroundings as they walked on, while it seemed as though every old building was trying to tell him something, prodding into that pang in his chest til it felt like there was a heavy fist curled tightly around his power supply.
Without even realizing it, he raised a hand to his chest. “If you had not rescued me from that lab, I would probably have ended up as just another mindless obstacle aboard the Black Heaven. I don’t remember if I ever thanked you for saving me from that.” Perhaps Claudine thought he was the one that helped her out of Gelimer’s hell, but in his mind it was always the other way around. “So, thank you…”
There was still that gloomy realization that even after all Xenon had been through, he still couldn’t remember. There were times at first when she wanted to cry from the realization, feeling terrible for that day when he disappeared. She always had blamed herself for it, they tended to walk home together after playing but they hadn’t that day. It was her greatest regret, she felt like she failed to protect him.
“Of course.”
The reply came, fighting through the heavy pain and guilt that washed over her. It was why she would do anything to make it so he could be happy again. Even if she couldn’t have her old friend back, maybe they could start over again. “I’m glad you didn’t become that. I saw while aboard the horrors Gelimer was inflicting upon people, or... what he planned to inflict.” Another small smile upturned her lips. “You’ve thanked me before, but, it’s still nice to hear.” She wouldn’t say such a thing aloud but it made her feel less terrible that at least she was able to help before Gelimer fully corrupted his mind.
She bit down upon the insides of her lips, swallowing as they continued to walk. All of these places that should have been happy memories of when they played as children were nothing but regrets for her and fuzzy feelings that may never be restored for him. She knew very well that amnesia was not something that could be cured in humans, but she would be damned if she wasn’t actively trying to find some way to recover his memories.

He blinked at her in curiosity at the mention of a surprise. “Yes, I know… You guys really did make me feel welcomed here before, thank you. S-so.. don’t worry, I got that you were just making a joke before. You wouldn’t lock me out.” Roo-D had told Xenon that he really seemed to be making progress on his emotions, but… humor still seemed to be a losing battle. The best defense to which he could muster seemed to be: attempting to recognize the basic structure of a joke, reading the cues of others, and pretending to laugh– the latter of which he did presently in order to punctuate his last sentence. A slight lift of the shoulders, a little smile and a natural-sounding breath of a chortle.
“But a-anyway.. we both know a lull in activity like this doesn’t usually last long. So may we have that walk, Claudine?” He asked as he rocked back on his heels and then started to pace backwards, hoping to goad her into following him towards Edelstein’s strolling path. “You have me rather… curious about this surprise.”
“You’re... doing much better with things since when we first met again. It was hard for all of us to comprehend, how a weapon would go rouge and why you chose to help me of all things. You seemed very uh, robotic back then. But... I’m glad you didn’t lose all of your memories, even if they are fuzzy.” Well that was more of a mouthful than what she had actually intended, but even the most stubborn of folk could get sentimental at times apparently. Sure it was still extremely obvious that something was ‘off’ about him, but it wasn’t as strange as before.
She nodded her head, taking follow of him as the leather mask was placed within her pocket. “A spur of the moment gift really. Just a little something, as you’ve been so kind to me and the others. But once we return, I can show it to you, if you’d like?”

Xenon looked.. mildly concerned over the mention of robot-proof locks for about a second, but was rather instantly placated by Claudine’s rare smile and ringing laughter.
“My ‘mission’ was to return this to you, Veritas has offered me no further objective for the day. I was actually going to ask if you had any work for me…” He wouldn’t turn down a reason to visit his friends in Edelstein, but the ‘missions’ he had been receiving from the lab had become more and more mundane in nature recently, and he really wasn’t sure how to feel about it.
He nodded, and finally responded to her proposal in an upbeat tone. “But if a walk is what you want, I would happily join you~”
“Not for you.” Came the near instant response and raised eyebrows noticing his somewhat concerned look. It was a lot harder to notice these days, given that he still lacked most emotional response from the incident.
Hm. Must be a quiet day for Veritas then, rather unusual given that they seemingly had him running amuck for the longest time for strange tasks. Scientists weren’t exactly well known for physical activity she supposed. “Do know that you can always return here if you wish during your free time. Without the occupancy of the Black Wings looming so heavily over Edelstein it has also given me a bit of a break.” But at the same time, not really. Her work as a doctor still remained and now she was riddled with Alliance work that was generally shoved off to Brighton or Elex. They were more cheerful than her and didn’t have as much snark.
“Yes, that would be my request. It would give us a little time to talk, before I show you the surprise I had for whenever you returned here again.” Claudine had learned from one of the workers stationed at Veritas that her friend had gained quite the interest in watching the fish. Which resulted in a strange trip to Aqua Road involving trying to see what they could fit in a fish tank before ultimately just deciding on buying some of the Bubble Fish that were bred to be kept as pets. Hopefully he would like them, she truly wanted to see him happy even if it was for a short while.

“Well first off, you have to lose that frown.” It sounded ridiculous, coming from him, the man who never smiled. Still, his lips curved up into a small smile at the tino, who hopped to his hand with no fear. He carried it up to face level with Claudine. “Tinos tend to get scared very easily if you glare and yell at them, and that is when they start causing trouble, because they panic. So a kind smile will go a long way in getting them to trust you better and stop hiding from you. They’re quite sensitive.”
Of course, he had his own tino, one that he raised from a child when he found it alone. It was so scared of him it took him awhile to actually regain its trust. Smiling at it was one of the better ways to get it to listen, other than bribing it with bird seeds.
The little tino stared at Claudine with its tiny beady eyes, chirping quietly at her.
That first tip was golden considering not once in their entire work relationship had she actually seen the man smile. Which such reality was quickly shattered as he did indeed smile for the little bird. Sensitive... right.
Well, there wasn’t any threats nearby so she figured that it couldn’t hurt too much. A small smile curved her lips into a position that felt entirely unnatural from having not done it in years. Or at least since the reality set in of why her friend disappeared all those years ago.
The tiny bird seemed to nearly throw itself at her with how quickly it hopped over to her which resulted in her holding both hands out for it. A tino wasn’t really like most birds, it was more like an orb shaped bird rather than the more aerodynamic sorts you usually see. They didn’t seem too much for flying but what did she know. Maybe they just bounced.

He held out the finely made leather mask towards Claudine. “Sorry… Roo-D borrowed it. Without permission.”
“Ah- so that’s where it ended up. And here I was convinced that Ulrika had taken it for another playdate with the other children. I guess I should invest in some robot proof locks.” She laughed, smiling a little as she took it from him holding it in her hands. “Since you’re here Xenon, would you care to join me for a walk? Or do you have a mission to attend to?”
