there's an edge to her voice that cuts clean through skin and sinew, the thickened sound of tears wrapping around his sternum like a frozen vice, steel jaws threatening to splinter bone. ❪ and maybe he's just learned to always assume something terrible, a lifetime raised on nothing but worst case scenarios ❫. pessimism become an instinct when everything good inevitably turned to ash, when any sense of joy only served as a precursor to a anguish. heartbeat starting to collide against ribs, panic a rising tide.
but he forces himself to breathe, sucks air between pursed lips. in and out, in and out. ❪ hears his therapist's voice shape around words like catastrophising and fortune telling, reminding him that fears are not the same as facts ❫. tries to focus the racing in his head, silencing thoughts before they can spiral further. crossing the distance from kitchen to bathroom, the steps counted off in his head. hand bracing against the doorframe when he reaches destination, focus immediately drawn to where saline stains her cheeks, stomach churning anew. “ hey, what's up? you okay? ”
✽՚༹ ˙⌁ the panic on his features was clear as day. she knew his mind was likely to be racing, conjuring every terrible outcome it could. instead of speaking, she goes to him, hands gently framing his face as their gazes meet. ❝ i am sorry to have startled you, ❞ she says softly, leaving a kiss upon his cheek. it was something she could understand. honestly, with how she had sounded, it made sense for him to worry. ❝ i have something to show you, ❞ her nerves stirring. a part of her worried. what if this was not something he hoped for? what if he did not want this with her? despite her fears, she backs into the restroom, hands taking his to ease him forward. ❝ pl-please, take your time to take it in. i do not expect an immediate reply, ❞ she is fast to explain. this would be a lot for anyone to take in. gesturing to the counter, she allows him to see the test for himself. ❝ carmy, i am pregnant . . . ❞
