so this scene was amazing because there’s so many ways to view it, but i can’t help but think about how Steven was doing this to himself, and yelling at himself to stop…
Sometimes, his therapy sessions were… nice? They were nice, in weeks that had been good to him - Steven would recap those weeks with much gusto to Dr. A, who would congratulate him on his good week, and it created a sort of feedback loop of positivity.
He could talk about the new songs he was learning on his guitar, about how he’d gotten back into the habit of cooking proper food, about how he’d borrowed some old study guides from Connie in an attempt at - something? He had a lot of good things to talk about, and so much as they didn’t attempt to do any “deep diving” of sorts it was perfectly, totally fine that he was in therapy, that he could spend an hour talking about himself, just himself, to someone else.
- and, and it wasn’t like those “deep dives” were always a disaster, either! When he’d walk into the office in the right mindset (productive, like in the days when he was running Little Homeschool properly, efficient and full of confidence), they could sit down and talk about the past, unpack a little of what he felt about his mom, about the Diamonds, about everything that had happened to him since becoming a Gem proper (or even before), and he’d leave feeling - cleaned? Raw, certainly, but with a preciseness that left him still functional.
Those days Steven looked forward to a little less, but he didn’t dread them, per se.
The days he dreaded weren’t as rare as he would’ve liked, but after a few months of seeing his therapist, there were still sessions that left him - not worse off, certainly, but just painfully aware of how short one measly hour could be. Those sessions, he left red-faced (or pink-faced a few times, and he’d have to sit in the Dondai for up to a half hour trying to will himself to just calm, calm down, he was fine now, he just needed to get home and he couldn’t drive like that -) and teary-eyed, and feeling like a husk, hollowed-out with all the precision of a machete into his heart.
What he did after those sessions varied, but whatever he did always had that tinge of guilt to it - and oh, he was supposed to work on that too, that feeling of shame he had over feeling less than stellar! But sometimes he’d drive over to the beach furthest from the Temple and would sit, staring out at the waves diving in and out of the sand, for hours; sometimes he’d go up to the hillside near where he had trained with Jasper and would just scream.
Most times, though, he would just find himself at home, would slug himself up the stairs, close the blinds, and just - lay there. Would not do anything, just listening to the rushing of blood in his ears and the sounds of silence around him.
He talked to Dr. A about that, expecting (hoping?) for a full reprimanding, but instead she had shrugged at him. “Many people find what you’re going through in these sessions to be heavy work, Steven,” she had said softly, “and heavy work requires its own set of recovery. While you should be careful about isolating yourself too much, it’s okay to take a breather, too.”
She had pulled out some worksheets for him then, too, given him some tips on how to handle his coming down whatever it was (trauma) that had him so worked up in the first place. And he had shrugged at her, glanced them over and shoved them into his bag, murmuring with embarrassment that he would consider it.
…and yet, after that session itself had gone south, and he found himself up in his room, the words from the sheet came back to him - contact with others, it had recommended.
He knew that Connie’s study break wasn’t for another 43 minutes, but he found himself calling her anyways - and oh, he had to swallow down the guilt that came with that, of course - and as it connected, as the glow from the screen lit up his face in the darkened room, as he muttered out a hoarse greeting to her concerned face…
… maybe, he thought, he could do this.
Another step.

every steven speech: we’ll do it together, with the power of love and friendship!

You ever just see a hot take about a character that’s so fundamentally WRONG you just have to sit back and ask if they have ever looked at the source material, ever?
Damn..
You know, when Blue sang, "I'll never make you cry", At first I thought it was just a slightly shallow extension of what she said in the movie, about how she never makes people cry anymore. But then i remembered that the thing that snapped Blue out of her abusive behavior was Steven asking her "how many times did you make (Pink) cry?" And that that was the reason she started to change to begin with. She was so shaken by the realization she made someone she loves miserable. The song is directed at both Steven and Spinel, theyre her little reasons why- thats how she addresses them- and when this particular line happens she sings it to Spinel, promising her she would never make her cry. Blue learned from her mistakes with Pink, and the reason she would never do it again is because she cant bare to lose Steven and Spinel. Theyre the little reasons why.
We’ve always believed in him, I’m so happy he can finally believe in himself too
This show has helped me in ways i could’ve never imagined. It has taught me to always try and look for the best in everyone, even in myself. I don’t think i would be the same person had this show not come into my life, it’s made me want to spread as much love as I can and to strive to be the best version of myself. I could go on for hours and still i’d never be able to quite describe how much this show means to me, and I’m sure most of us feel that way too. so I can just.. say thanks!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much Rebecca and Crewniverse! the future looks bright! 🌟
He’s all grown up.
You can’t be too hard on Rose for keeping everything locked down, for never reaching out, or asking anyone for support…. By this point she was acutely aware that losing control of her emotions – especially abusive-relative-related emotions – meant nothing but danger for the people around her.
I dont know why im like this
Series creator Rebecca Sugar graciously gave CBR her time to discuss the ending of Steven Universe Future.
CBR: Steven Universe Future has a very different feel that the original five season arc. Future recontextualizes a lot about the first five seasons, both things that were heavily argued about (Steven’s seeming forgiveness of White Diamond, which “Homeworld Bound” shows was a lot more complicated) and things most people weren’t even thinking (I’m still amazed how all those wacky season 1 adventures came up in discussing Steven’s PTSD in “Growing Pains” a few weeks ago). How much of Future’s darker recontextualization was planned out from the beginning of the series versus how much was discovered through developing this season?
RS: I could absolutely never understand where this idea of Steven being a “forgiving” character was coming from, because internally we all understood Steven’s self-sacrificing nature as his biggest flaw, one that related directly to his identity issues. This is all over the show: in “The Test,” even though he’s disappointed in the Gems and feels disrespected by them, he lies to them to make them feel better – a huge turning point for his character, one of the first times he decides that their comfort matters more than his own feelings. Even though Steven will not allow Connie to sacrifice herself for him in “Sworn to the Sword,” he does exactly what he tells her not to: puts himself in harm’s way countless times and ultimately turns himself in to Aquamarine and Topaz. Connie even calls him out on this in “Dewey Wins.”
The toll his adventures take on him mentally is a huge theme. His self-depreciation is evident throughout the show, even in first season episodes like “Cheeseburger Backpack.” He internalizes everything as his fault. In “What’s Your Problem,” Steven is shown to be aggressively repressing his feelings. In “Reunited,” Steven sings that he essentially needs the wedding as a distraction, because he can’t stand thinking about who he is or the situation he’s in. In “Chille Tid,” he explicitly states that he has issues to work out, but then shifts the conversation immediately to Lapis, who he feels needs help more.
At no point does he forgive White Diamond, or any of the Diamonds. He thinks how he feels about what’s going on matters less than the greater good, because throughout the show, he’s not sure if he even really exists. Ultimately, in “Change Your Mind,” you see the moment he realizes he is himself and he loves himself. Steven’s existence proves White wrong and crumbles her entire reality, and with it her authority. And knowing that he is himself, and he does exist, is what he needs in order to respect himself enough to leave those self-destructive patterns behind.
In an animated series with a kid protagonist, it’s easy to take for granted that a child hero is being tasked with saving the world, being antagonized by adults and having multiple near-death experiences. As we wrote the original series we always approached this as if it was real for Steven, and really taking a toll on him. We explored this in episodes like “Mindful Education.” Future was a chance to further clarify that, by having an older version of Steven reflect on those experiences and their toll. I also wanted Future to be a chance to show that his relationship with himself requires maintenance, and that his old habits die hard. Once the story for Future clicked, it felt like a very natural progression.
I think a lot of people don't get that Rebecca probably doesn't wanna say "SU franchise will continue in X form" because even she does not know.
Take Rowling for example: she said she was done after book 7, and eventually a new spin-off book and play were released.
Rebecca has explicitly said she WANTS to work with this world again. But the how and when depend on things outside her control.
Most likely, she is gonna take a break now, go on her honeymoon and stuff. And once she feels ready she will see what her options are for projects to work on.
TL,DR: Whether SU franchise continues and how is definitely not JUST up to Rebecca Sugar. So of course she hasn't made any definitive statement either way.
Reminder for people to relax and not assume things either way
