I heard this song “Shannon”, a sad ballad, at work this week. It became the backdrop for the week and weekend. I’ve always liked it, and I am a sucker for one hit wonders .. and moody ballads. Written by Henry Gross about Beach Boy’s Brian Wilson’s setter named Shannon who was hit by a car, Gross, a casual friend of Wilson, also had a setter named Shannon at the time of the writing. Wilson’s Shannon was credited with pulling him out of depression and was devastated by the loss. Gross said he took him ten minutes to write music & lyrics, and the recording is identical to the first demo in its arrangement. You can listen on YouTube. - "Shannon" is a 1976 song by Henry Gross. It became an international hit, reaching #6 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the Cash Box Top 100. Although it was a much smaller hit in the UK and Australia, the song reached #1 in Canada and New Zealand.
