“My favorite color?” Ephraim had wondered why colors were the subject of people talking to him. He thought long and hard and never really had a favorite color. But he knew which color was the calmest to him. “Lavender probably. It soothes me and brings calmness to my soul.” Ephraim sheepishly chuckled as he picked his lance up off the ground and continued his target practice with a dummy.

“My eyes? I’ve been told they’re either blue or green or some off-color in between.” Ephraim steadied his lance against the ground and huffed some. A random question from a random person was alright to him. He didn’t mind questions like this at all. “Do I like them? I mean. I like having eyes yes. I can see and target the enemy. The color is fine too I suppose. Lyon always told me he liked the color of my eyes so I suppose I like em for that reason.”

Eirika wrinkled her noise at him. “You actually had me worried! I thought our apartments were cursed with bugs.”

She raised an eyebrow at Ephraim’s choice of shirt. She had been half-asleep at the time, but hadn’t he said something about going out to eat? She wasn’t sure if a diner would allow someone with a tanktop to eat there.

“I’ll sleep on the couch, then. I wouldn’t want your back to get sore.” She was only half-joking. “You know, it would be fun if we had an actual sleepover. We could each fall asleep on one of my chairs, and watch movies.”

Oh damn. “Hah. Yeah, he recommended this science book to me.” Her heart, which had already been pounding from the supposed spider, beat faster.

But wouldn’t Ephraim notice that it was a journal? “Have you ever seen those books in college libraries that don’t have the title on them? It’s one of those.”

It was ironic that he mentioned Lyon, as her entries about him were one reason why Eirika wanted to keep it private. Reading them filled her with shame now:

Sometimes I worry about what would happen to Lyon if Ephraim and I ever moved away. Does he have other friends?

Maybe I should go to prom with him. It’s not like there’s anyone else he’d ask.

Lyon is my best friend, but he has this way about him that’s like a puppy.

Sure, the entries were teenage callousness that were meant to be caring, but what would Ephraim think if he read them? Or worse, what she had said about his disagreements with their father?

Ephraim had tossed the dairy back under the covers and sat up, looking at Eirika he gave a grin. It was so easy to toy with Eirika throughout the day. He stretched and sat up in her bed then fully. Tossing her pillow onto the floor, and then he sat up. Patting her back gently, he cocked his head. 

“So ya gonna come with me to the grocery store? I’m buying ya some groceries to compensate for me staying here during this time.” Ephraim grinned some and walked to her door and leaned on the doorway. “We can walk there unless you got a better way.” Ephraim folded his arms across his chest and tapped his foot.

“Plus I’m hungry and I want a lot of meat in your freezer. And even then, I can cook dinner sometimes for you when you get home from work. Finish getting ready and come out to the living room.” Ephraim left her room and approached the couch where he slept. The blankets were in disarray and a complete mess. He started to fold the blankets and make it look nice and neat.

“Hopefully I can move back home soon enough… I don’t want to burden her more than I already have.”

Oh, thank God he dropped the diary, literally and figuratively. Oh, and he had wanted to go to a grocery store? His clothes made a bit more sense, then.

“Funny you should ask about walking. I’m actually thinking about buying a moped. Did you see the one on the balcony on corner property on the floor below? They probably shouldn’t be leaving that outside, where anyone could try some weird scheme to steal it or it can get damaged by the weather, but it gave me a chance to check it out.”

“You don’t have to do all that for me!” Eirika laughed. “Okay, I won’t complain if you do, though.”

She took the opportunity to get changed while he straightened up outside.

“Your neighbors have a moped?” Ephraim grinned at his sister and many thoughts come to his mind. But all he heard was Lyon in the back of his mind telling him how wrong it would be to steal the moped. He looked out the window and saw the moped in question. 

“I mean, if you want it, I could probably steal it and fix it up for you. Or I could just always buy one for you. Is work slow for you right now, dear sister?” Ephraim paced around in the living room and looked around at her various decorations. 

“Eirika, your diary, I saw Lyon’s name mentioned. Have you heard from him lately?” Ephraim leaned against the wall by Eirika’s door so she could hear him better and he tapped his finger against his bicep. He wanted to know how Lyon was doing at uni but he didn’t want to seem needy when it came to him. Even if he was one of the few people who were his closest friends.

“I just miss the guy is all.”

Ephraim cracked open the beer and from that moment then, he wouldn’t leave Hector’s side. The two worked best together to get the whole house wound up, but they were also the two people that could calm everyone down. Ephraim had his beer in one hand and his other arm around Hector then. He was being led to outside for this inflatable course that he had mentioned.

Ephraim hadn’t cared much for his studies, he was mainly here for sports and to socialize. Eirika was still the one who was more interested in learning, like the nerd she was. He grinned and kept in step with Hector as he was led by the larger man.

“Yea, I know I was just kinda late. My apartment is getting work done on it so I had to stay with Eirika and sleeping on her couch in a pain in my ass. Her place is so out of the way from the campus too. Fuck man, I’m glad we’re having this celebration though. It’ll help me loosen up.” Ephraim raised her beer can and then took a gulp of it, effectively downing about half the can.

“Oh and I’m gonna kick that ass of yours too. Bet.” Ephriam grinned as he saw the inflatable course that Hector had mentioned. His smile was bright and he let out a loud laugh. It had looked like something they could have swiped from a five-year-old birthday party.

“Bro, where did you get this though? I want one for my own apartment.” He let go of Hector’s shoulders and approached the structure. Downing the rest of his can, he crunched the can and tossed it off to the side. He poked the side of the structure. It was still a bit baggy.

“I think they’re still blowing it up, ya wanna drink more until it’s done?”

The fact that Hector had even managed to end up in college had been a triumph in and of itself. He could buckle down when he needed to, make good marks in subjects that he enjoyed, but there wasn’t much in school that truly interested him outside of sports. If he didn’t have Eliwood in his life, he was sure that he wouldn’t have made it past high school. He slept through his classes more often than staying awake and barely passed his classes, even though he was expected to take over the family business when Uther stepped down. 

He couldn’t help but laugh when he heard about why Ephraim had been late to the party. He wasn’t a stranger to sleeping on couches, nights when he was feeling particularly lonely, he found himself waking up in strangers living rooms or bedrooms. “You know, you could have stayed with me. I have more than enough room at my apartment and you’d at least have a bed to sleep on instead of a couch.” The two of them had become fast friends and when either of them got to drunk, they often slept slept over each other’s apartments.  

“I always look forward to the weekend when were just able to let go and loosen up from the stress of the week. I was surprised when I saw that our frat got this inflatable course, but I can’t wait to kick your ass on it!” He had a playful smirk dancing on his lips as he took another swig of his drink and continued to walk outside with the other. 

“I can’t take the credit for all of this, I just pitched the idea to the frat and they decided it sounded like it would be fun. I thought that a bunch of us trying to out do one another and having to down shots or chug a beer if we lost sounded like a great ass time.” He finished up his drink, tossing his red solo cup into the garbage can when they passed it. 

“Oho, you read my mind. You know that I’m always down to have another drink. Let’s go see what they have.”

Ephraim gave a wide grin and patted the man’s back. He absolutely loved coming to college if it just was for Hector sometimes. Some other guys were around a beer stand and Ephraim pointed it out, excited like a little puppy would upon seeing a new chew toy. 

“Hector look! More beer!” Ephraim grinned and gravitated towards the stand then and a few people high fived him and he looked down there were two colors of cups. A red solo cup and a blue one. Upon asking what the difference one, Ephraim grabbed two red color cups and returned to Hector’s side and handed him a cup. 

“I got you a beer buddy, the blue cups are lite beers so watch out for those.” Ephraim really didn’t enjoy beer the most but it was the cheapest and the fastest to get him trashed. Plus they weren’t going to pull out Tequilla or Vodka anytime soon. His eyes drifted to the inflatable course and it seemed almost done. It took a while to set up but Ephraim was full-on prepared to beat Hector’s ass.

“We need to get thoroughly trashed though before either of us gets on that thing.” He grinned and could feel his cheeks heating up a bit from the alcohol he’s already consumed.

Absolute Specimens

Ephraim grinned as he placed his hands on his hips to pop something in his back. Maybe he should see a chiropractor sometime for his bone issues, today as not that day. Ephraim then moved his hands to behind his head and unintentionally flexed his arms then. He swayed ever so slightly in his spot and looked around at the gym. Not a lot of people were in here yet, so most of the machines were open.

“What’s your normal rotation? I have different days for different parts that I work out on. Today is leg day. So I mainly run on the treadmill and do a few squats to help out the toning of my legs.” Ephraim waved to someone passing by and then he looked back to Gray. 

“I suppose if anything, a rival in the gym would be something fun too. See who can push themselves hardest. Running longer or pushing more weight. Everything’s a possibility. Do you wanna do that?” Ephraim asked and he stretched his arms upwards and then down to his toes to get a nice big stretch in. He was still feeling a bit sore but nothing he couldn’t handle.

Gray chuckled, “Wouldn’t you know, it’s leg day for me too. I normally do some lighter upper body stuff, just to keep a routine and then move on to ellipticals. Feels like piloting some sort of mecha, ya know?”

His chuckle grew into a grin as he though of rivalry. “Hey, as long as it’s a friendly rivalry I’m in.” He thought for a second before continuing. “I don’t want either of us getting hurt because we decided to push ourselves too far. Otherwise, I don’t see a problem with it.” 

Gray glanced over at the treadmills, noting with satisfaction that there were two open side by side. He jerked a thumb in their direction. “We could start now, I haven’t done the leg portion of leg day yet.”

Ephraim looked to the treadmills and they seemed to be empty for now. A grin splashed across his face and he was very eager to have a work out buddy now. Especially one so dedicated to the gym like he was. Another gym rat, maybe I should start coming on these days. He thought to himself as he patted the guy’s back.

“Nah don’t worry I won’t push myself to the point of breaking bones but breaking a sweat? Definitely.” Ephraim grinned as he led them over to the treadmills. Giving his a quick wipedown with the cleaning supplies nearby, he jumped up onto the machine then. 

“Alright man, how do ya wanna do this? Gradual like a normal person would? Or do you want to do it at an incline?” Ephraim grinned at his remark at the incline just because that was more of a challenge for him then and hopefully Gray would appreciate a challenge as well.

Drinks and Dragons

Ephraim looked down at the pretty pink dice and picked them up in his hand. Rolling them over in his hands, he had wondered if Lyon was doing well during these times. Ephraim knew that Lyon didn’t leave his house often enough. But he had still missed him terribly.

Ephraim leaned over to grab one of the manuals that Genny had mentioned but when it was opened, Ephraim’s eyes lost the words to read. He shut the book again, reading was never one of his stronger suits. He didn’t have the attention span to create a campaign but he could certainly help Genny.

He leaned back in his chair to look over at Genny, “Hey, Genny, can I just help you torture your group? I don’t have the brains to make my own campaign. I can totally help you with yours though.” He grinned and grabbed his drink, espresso with cream mainly in his drink. He slowly brought it to his lips and drank a good portion of it. “And nah, Lyon gave up on his campaign when our friends had moved away and couldn’t participate anymore.”

Ephraim still held her die in his hands and just fumbled with the dice, hearing the clatter with the dice rubbing against each other. It almost soothed him.

It didn’t take long for Genny to get her overly sweet and highly caffeinated refill and she settled back into her seat as Ephraim asked if he could torture the group. She huffed a laugh into her mug. “You don’t need to make a whole campaign, just start with a single room. Here, I’ll show you.”

She pulled a piece of graph paper out of her binder and laid it alongside the book, propping it open to the dungeon-crafting index. “So you have all these charts, right? I roll a d10 to pick the starting area…” She plucked a dice from the tray and rolled it, frowning as it came up on 10. “I don’t like starting on an intersection so I’m gonna roll again.” She grinned as it came up a more reasonable 2 on the next roll: a simple 20 by 20 room with two doors and an archway. ”From here I can sketch out the square on the graph paper and then add the doors wherever I want. I just have to consult another table to get types of doors and stuff. There’s also charts for what feeling the room gives off. Let’s make this one… a death trap.”

Genny rolled another dice and jotted down some notes next to the room. “Looks like this was a fortified guardroom, which is a pretty good place for players to break into initially.” She held the die out to Ephraim. “Want to see what the doors are like?”

Her brain caught up with the rest of the conversation and she frowned thoughtfully, “I’m not at full player capacity yet, if you wanted to pop in there is room for one more. Or two, if your friend is still in the area.”

Ephraim had just rested his head in his hand as he heard Genny talk about rooms and doors and auras? Ephraim was getting a bit lost but then she was handing her dice to him again. He was excited to participate again. What would be a good roll for doors? What should he expect? He hadn’t known but he wanted to help Genny as much as he could.

He rolled the pretty pink dice and saw one die pop up a 3 and the other a 4. He cocked his head and looked to her then. “So what exactly are we doing to the doors? Is it a challenge for the players to try to get through them?” Ephraim had vaguely remember Lyon speaking once about assembling a dungeon but Ephraim had just been the person to roll the dice for him.

“Oh uh, Lyon is the friend. He goes to college far away so I don’t get to see him often enough sadly.” Ephraim had missed his closest friend tremendously but it wasn't anything that he could stop. Lyon was always more interested in his studies and Ephraim couldn’t stand lectures and all that. He just wanted Lyon to visit more often.

“It’s nothing bad though, he’ll come back home soon.”

“My apologies for the assumption. With your vigorous training, you reminded me of another student with a similar hair color. I thought by chance you two might be related.” Dimitri felt a smidge abashed by his incorrect guess. Well, you know what they say about assumptions, he thought to himself.

“Hail and well met, Ephraim. I’m Dimitri. I’m the class leader for the Blue Lions, one of the three houses here at the monastery.” He introduced himself, not disclosing that he was heir apparent. Although, Dimitri felt as if he got extremely lucky with Ephraim being interested in lance techniques. Just learning the basics from the Knight of Seiros would take months but to learn everything? Even starting knights struggled to meet the expectations of Jeralt the Bladebreaker

“I believe you’ve come to the right place then. A majority of the Knights of Seiros are from all over Fodlan so their techniques are quite diverse, though it could take a while.”

Ephraim had just raised his hand to wave to the man. Dimitri? Hm, he had heard the name through the halls when he was on his way here. Was it that Dimitri was a good in battle and that’s why he was hailed? He had mentioned that he’s the class leader so they’re students? Ephraim shook his head, so was this guy a student, or was he a fighter?

Ephraim just shrugged it off, there was too much to unpack here given the situation at hand and he didn’t know how to handle thinking that much. But the Knights of Seiros? Who was Seiros? Was there an entirety of knights dedicated to protecting her? Ephraim had wished Lyon or his sister was with him now to help figure things out. 

“Alright so like, I don’t really understand what you’re saying, but from what I do understand, you’re saying I can get stronger and learn new techniques if I hang around here a bit more? Because I understand that loud and clear? Seiros? Never heard of em. Blue Lions? That’s your class name? Sounds vicious. I like it.” Ephraim grinned and raised his lance.

“So you’re the class leader of the Blue Lions. Alright, I’m Ephraim, I come from a faraway land called Renais, I’m actually partially ruling it with my twin sister. So some would say I’m a King. I consider myself a mercenary right now though learning new things about lances to better my country.” Ephraim was ready to spar this man, he wanted to beat him. He knew he could beat Dimitri.

Ephraim had been naturally picked to join a frat house. He was well gifted in sports and had just enough smarts to get him by in college. Thanks to a few of his friends, he was excelling quite well. There were no tests coming up, hopefully, that he knew of, and no upcoming homework. He had the weekend off so thus, to the frat house.

Showing up in shorts and a shirt with the sleeves torn off, he was prepared to get absolutely trashed on anything he could get his hands on. His frat house was full of his buddies that he had met throughout college, yet, one of them was particularly close to him. They had always challenged each other and constantly sought out who could outdo the other. Ephraim had always loved a challenge even with the closest of his friends. 

Knocking on the door, he was greeted with a semi-familiar face. High-fiving and giving a quick pat the other guys back, Ephraim was inside the home. Minimal decor scattered around the house, but what did adorn the home was several beer bottles, cans, kegs, you name it. Ephraim grinned, the drinking had already begun. There was probably a fight going on somewhere in the house. He made his way to the kitchen to see his favorite rival, Hector.

Ephraim ran up behind him and gave a slap to the man’s back and gave a loud laugh. “Hey Hec, how’s it been, brother? Getting into trouble without me?”

Ephraim had enjoyed that the larger man could keep up with him and his antics. It’s what made the time they spent together so enjoyable. Ephraim grinned, removing himself from his friend and leaning over the counter to grab a can of beer. 

“What’s on the agenda today?”

It had not been much of a decision on Hector’s end on whether he was going to enroll in college or not. He had hated school ever since he was younger, often sleeping through classes that he was bored with and passing by the skin of his teeth. The only subject he really ever found joy in was gym and that’s because he didn’t really have to work all that hard at being good at sports. However, since his brother Uther had passed away, he was going to be in charge of his families finances and he couldn’t afford to blow that because he didn’t know what he was doing. 

He was grateful that he had been accepted into the same college as Eliwood, knowing that if he had been forced to be away from the other that it would make staying in college that much harder. He was excited for the party that they were having tonight, already hearing some of the members of his frat talking with one another as he finished getting ready. He ran a hand through his hair, smirking to himself when he finally got it to go the way he wanted before smoothing down his shirt. 

He decided to wear his tank top that had cuts down the side, showing off his well toned and chiseled stomach as well as the muscles in his arms. He paired that with a tight fitting pair of jeans before going downstairs, hoping that he’d be able to find out where Ephraim was at. He was close with all of the people that were in their frat, but Ephraim was the one he was closest with because he was always someone he could count on to get into trouble with him. They had a friendly rivalry with one another that always led them to having the craziest stories to tell everyone. 

He figured that the other would be in the kitchen with most of the other guys in their frat if he was there. He looked around and didn’t see him just yet, figuring that he was on his way there. He grabbed a red solo cup that was sitting on the counter before grabbing the bottle of cherry rum and a cherry coke. He poured a little of the cherry coke in first before adding a generous amount of the rum in and topping the rest of the drink off with the cherry coke again. He threw the can of pop in the trash can as he took a long gulp of the drink, relishing in the slight burn as it worked its way down. 

He almost dropped his drink when he felt someone slap his back before letting out a boisterous laugh and turning around to gently punch the other in the shoulder. “Hey, Ephraim! Took you long enough to get here. Glad you finally managed to make your appearance.” He teased, leaning back against the counter as he watched the other grab a beer from the counter. 

“I hope that you’re ready for some fun tonight. They’re just finishing up putting this crazy inflatable obstacle course that ends in the pool. I can’t wait to go up against you and wipe the floor clean with you.” There was a playful smirk dancing on his lips as he started to led the two of them outside where the rest of their frat was at.

Ephraim hadn’t cared much for his studies, he was mainly here for sports and to socialize. Eirika was still the one who was more interested in learning, like the nerd she was. He grinned and kept in step with Hector as he was led by the larger man.

“Yea, I know I was just kinda late. My apartment is getting work done on it so I had to stay with Eirika and sleeping on her couch in a pain in my ass. Her place is so out of the way from the campus too. Fuck man, I’m glad we’re having this celebration though. It’ll help me loosen up.” Ephraim raised her beer can and then took a gulp of it, effectively downing about half the can.

“Oh and I’m gonna kick that ass of yours too. Bet.” Ephriam grinned as he saw the inflatable course that Hector had mentioned. His smile was bright and he let out a loud laugh. It had looked like something they could have swiped from a five-year-old birthday party. 

“Bro, where did you get this though? I want one for my own apartment.” He let go of Hector’s shoulders and approached the structure. Downing the rest of his can, he crunched the can and tossed it off to the side. He poked the side of the structure. It was still a bit baggy. 

“I think they’re still blowing it up, ya wanna drink more until it’s done?”

patroclus - do you regret anything?

Ephraim had crossed one leg over the other and had pondered the question at hand. Did he regret anything? Was it something that had ever crossed his mind at any point? Surely he regretted losing his friends, but that was something that could not be stopped. So surely he shouldn’t have dwelled on it too much. Although perhaps he had regretted some things, it wasn’t anything too big.

He had regretted missing meals sometimes in the past because it had meant a poor sparring session. In reality, though, it wasn’t anything truly too bad. 

“I can’t say my regrets are something of extreme measures. But I do have them from time to time but it’s nothing I hold onto.”

Training Troubles | Dimitri and Ephraim

Dimitri walked into the training room during his free period. It was his favorite pass-time that allowed him to de-stress from a full day of classes. He wasn’t sure what it was about holding a lance that made him forget all of his duties. Perhaps because it held a promise of something more than a life of royal duties and diplomacy. 

While he started his usual warm-ups, he couldn’t help but notice another boy that was training. He was about the same height as himself, perhaps a bit older. Dimitri hadn’t seen him around the monastery before but his hair was a kin to Caspar’s. He had never personally met the heir of House Bergliez, he supposed the two could be related. If he had seen Caspar train with a lance more then he could probably say they were trained in the same territory. The same had been true for him and his friends growing up, at least.

Instead of overthinking it more, Dimitri walked up to the stranger during a break. “Pardon, my interrupting, but I don’t think I’ve seen you around here before. Are you, by chance, a son of Count Bergliez?” he asked to confirm his theory.

Ephraim had instances where he loved to visit other areas and practice different types of lance training. He wanted a vast knowledge on everything that he could get his hands on. Although, actual sit down lectures were rather difficult. His attention span couldn’t handle sitting through a talking lecture. He’d rather try his lance at a new territory. As long as he was granted access to the area, he was more than happy to train.

Although his clothing was a bit off, he had asked a guard for a change of clothes which had been the typical standard clothing for where he was. Garreg Mach Monastery, where kids came to train and help their country of Fodlan. What a wonderful concept, Ephraim had thought to himself. Changing into the proper attire, he had a few days on campus until he needed to return to Magvel.

He had found the training room rather simple after asking a few people to help guide him. Magvel and Fodlan were so far off distance wise that no one here would possibly know that he was King of Renais. He was perfectly content with that, no hold barred then for him. No one would be concerned about harming him and then he could go all out. 

He had seen a blond haired man step into the area too, but Ephraim had decided to ignore him. If he asked anything, he would respond. But Ephraim had been the outsider and he didn’t want to seem out of place. Until the man was asking him questions that he had no idea what he was being asked. Bergliez? Surely that was a family name in Fodlan.

“Bergliez? I am... Not from that family.” Ephraim had blinked in response afterwards, he had no idea if he was in trouble or if this person was against that certain individual he was asking about. Ephraim had gripped the handle of Reginleif and slowly took a step back.

“My name is Ephraim, I’ve come here to spar, I want to learn all the lance techniques I can while I stay here temporarily. You are..?” Ephraim blinked then, oh shit, what if this guy was royalty or something and Ephraim was just seeming oblivious. That wasn’t rude of him to ask right? Ephraim sighed and rubbed the back of his head.

“Sorry, I’m not from here. From Fodlan, so don’t take it personally. I have no idea who anyone is here.”

Ephraim had a long rivalry with fellow Magvelian Prince, Innes. And ever since Innes had challenged him to swimming contests. Ephraim just had to learn how to swim from a young age. 

He nodded and grinned. “I can swim, and I have to be able to swim to beat Innes at any point I can. So of course I can swim! Now... Remembering to apply sunblock is a different story and sometimes I forget to do that and get sunburnt then.” Ephraim let out a little chuckle at his own forgetfulness.
