i wonder what Hagos Adera is up to
Sky and Fred, by me aka @fablelore
This year Iâve been more desperate for the next book than ever before - I also inadvertently reread both books of the series twice already. Once over my birthday, and just recently over Skyâs, (which I assume to be Halloween.)
So this is a birthday present to Sky and Mr. Patten!
Hug those monsters, guys. Hug âem good!
Sky Weathersâ Birthday
Itâs in October.
Unsatisfying, yes, we all want the precise date, donât we???
 Well, yes, I do too.
I have two theories, of two different dates, two arguments. You decide what you want to believe.
So, what are the facts? Letâs begin with the month, which to me, is certain. I spoiled it already: itâs October.
We are told that his birthday is the first day of the Hunterâs Moon. Ursula tells us this:
As well as by Phineas, in his journal:
Basically, thatâs no big secret.
(Side note: Solomon Rose was also born under the Hunterâs Moon. Significance?  Unclear. Though perhaps it has something to do with the First Hunter, and her Hunterâs Mark.)
Anyway, whatâs the Hunterâs moon? Simple, the full moon in October. Or, the full moon typically in October, the first full moon after the Harvest Moon.
The date of the Hunterâs Moon changes with the year, so to know the date we need to know the year. Which is where I have no solid evidence to support my next two ideas. Here goes:
The first of my ideas is that Sky was born in the year 2000. Itâs a modern setting, the first book was published at the end of 2011, becoming 2012.
Sky was 11 years old, turning 12, the first chapter being his birthday:
This is the same pattern in the second book, too. Sky is 13 in 2013.
Wouldât it be nice and neat for the main characterâs age to coincide with the year? Maybe. But that is as far as my argument goes for this theory.
Okay back to it. If this is the correct year, when in the *first day of the Hunterâs Moon in the year 2000?
*First because there are multiple days off the full moon, which vary year to year.
Thursday, October 12th, 2000. One possibility.
But wait, what if the year isnât 2000? Good question. You see, the second argument would suggest that Skyâs birth year is 2001.Â
Iâve ruled out 1999, because there are only 2 nights of the full moon.
So, 2001. Thatâs possible. It would place sky in the right age for a modern setting.
But there are 2 full moons in October of 2001, so letâs not get confused. The first is the Harvest moon, closest to the Autumnal Equinox, which is September 22nd that year. The Hunterâs moon is the first moon after the Harvest Moon, which we already covered. Therefore, the second full moon in October is the one weâre after.
Guess what?
The Hunterâs Moon in 2001 lands squarely on October 31st.  Halloween.
 Woo
Maybe. This next bit is a tad more lore-based. Something I found on E. J. Pattenâs blog:
This was from a post where he was talking about the early versions of the book we now know as Return to Exile. He states that some of the early concepts for the book were Halloween themed, so the month of October would be on the authorâs mind. Wouldnât it? Â
So there you have it. Two ideas, just ideas. If Iâm somehow right, by my estimates, 2019 Sky Weathers is 17-18 years old, and his birthday is either October 31st, 2001, or October 12th, 2000.
Thank you for coming.
More evidence:
In the second book, (The Legend Thief, or TLT, for short,) it is again Sky's birthday; but not a full moon. He says that it is "still a few weeks off"
If we go by the October 12th 2000 birthdate theory, the full moon in October 2013 (assuming the books take place the year if publishing, AKA present day, AKA 2013), the moon would be full as of a few days later. Not weeks. But if we go by the October 31st, 2001 date, the "next" full moon (not specified as the Hunter's Moon, so it could be the moon of November) would indeed be weeks away.
So, another point to the 2001 argument, I think.
