Life is Strange: (Lack of) Identity Crisis

obv you can reimagine you want; this just my read on canon. Max "is" like normcore sweatshirt nerdvibes and Chloe "is" soft punk masc- but really they're also none of those things, they're kids in 2013 who are mostly concerned with the central question of fitting in- Max is hiding from it, Chloe is rebelling against it-- but IMO neither of them are building or presenting internal identities from their external presentations.

Basically, even if they present in ways that some people think are more-androgynous than not, I don't think they see it as non-feminine.

Ex: Chloe doesn't have short hair because she's flaunting how gay she is, she's fed up with society as a whole, not just its specific mistreatment or erasure of lesbians. She's borrowing from the punk-rock-aesthetic tradition that flowed through the likes of Avril Lavigne, Hayley Williams, and countless other women; she'd dress exactly the same if she were straight, her hair would be just as blue. I don't think she's trying to signal a "butch" or "masc" identity.

Similarly, Max isn't more comfortable in her t-shirt and jeans because she's purposefully rejecting femininity- I don't even think anyone would have thought of those as mutually exclusive. She's just being a girl in jeans who doesn't care much for skirts and the attention they'd bring- it's not much of a rebellion. If anything, by hiding in the clothes she's always known, she's attempting to avoid being perceived, not presenting an identity of ambiguity.

Chloe's look is "you're not the boss of me" and Max's is "I am not here," and I don't think that binds to them to any other statement. I mean, they could be, many people of many different identities dress many different ways, and I'm sure there are people who look like them who are trying to express something more than they are, but I think these particular characters can just be gay girls who don't see wearing jeans as violating their own self-image of womanhood.

I don't think they're butchfemme or butchbutch or andromasc or whatever but I also don't think they have labels they'd use to replace those-I think they see themselves as girls who don't even need additional labels outside of the time travel and Chloe's not-so-secret desire to commit hilarious crimes.

ngl i do think reunion kinda messed up chloe/safi’s storyline, but i think the whole overlight thing is probably supposed to be a metaphor for choosing to stay alive.

moses says that spending too much time in the overlight could lead to the “unstitching” of the realities, but we know that safi was practically living in the overlight and was still very much alive, but she did slowly lose the will to stay alive. moses also said that chloe’s job might’ve helped her not go into the overlight as often.

basically i think that entire plotline was supposed to be a metaphor for becoming detached from your own life

Life Is Strange is a love story.

Now what exactly do I mean by that? Obviously it isn't JUST a love story, obviously there are other themes present in the first Life Is Strange. How could I possibly narrow it down to one, singular, thing?

Because throughout this entire game, this entire story... There is one through-line that connects Max's actions to everything else: Max's love for Chloe.

Now, this isn't just me being a Pricefielder, although I adore them as a romantic couple. I mean this as a baseline as well: No matter what you choose to do, whether you romance Chloe or you're just really good friends, Max's first and only priority throughout this entire game is keeping Chloe safe. The one thing that she is the most focused on is Chloe; reconnecting with her, sharing moments, protecting her...

Some people may bring up the endings and counteract my point, "If you have Chloe die, how is that still a love story?"

Let me ask you this, dear user: Do you think love stops at death? Or does it inform grief? Because I don't know about you... I think the fact that Max grieves so intensely that she refuses to let Chloe go in either timeline SHOWS how deep her love goes.

In every timeline, in every turn of events, Max will always love Chloe.

Life Is Strange is a love story, whether you want to admit it or not.

jackieshauna is subtextual not bc of censorship or bc of the writers being afraid to write a sapphic relationship, but bc it fits the understanding the characters have about their own feelings/their relationship. they represent the vagueness of female relationships, how female friendships are seen as being more intimate and how more stuff is seen as being platonic.
