i think under the idolisation and deification dora was ultimately just a woman… underneath it all was an ordinary person with her own wants and needs, who couldn’t be sated solely by bewitchment with harry. but harry desperately wanted to be entirely “enough” for her. the idea that he wasn’t, that mundanity (stress, bills, bad luck, the passage of time) could creep in and ruin this beautiful thing between them, taint the relationship he had molded himself around - horrible. evil. emasculating. unbearable. maybe in some ways he saw dora’s middle class-ness and her softness and beauty as a way out, his stepping stone, and in another life for someone else it COULD have been; then dora saw him stalling, rudderless, so she pointed him to the rcm as an act of love, and harry finally found something that could consume him entirely. beginning of the end. but neither of them left! for twelve years! they kept doing that to each other for twelve years!!! “I can't believe I met you. I can't believe the happiness I feel with you”… ok so was harry, in turn, dora’s extraordinary thing? this miraculous remarkable revachol west guy, unlike anything in the sphere of stability she grew up in… a little spark of unpredictability who was thrilling & fun & devoted to her. but dora always wanted to come home to stability in the end whereas harry, who has never known stability, just wanted Her. he wanted his single minded love to be enough but love could not pay the electric bill. dora’s parents did that. which i cannot stop thinking about bc that’s such a pointed aside to include, it suggests so much… the shine of playing house wearing off, humiliation & shame on both sides. dora wondering why she’s even there. harry realising she is no longer bewitched by him, he is no longer enough for her, burying himself in his job (which will always need him) to avoid facing dora’s rejection head on… resentment & bitterness growing between them like moss until the whole foundation of their relationship just collapses in slow motion over the course of a literal decade. what the fuck

the best thing about disco elysium is, in my mind, harry doesn’t deserve to be forgiven. it would be good for him, and maybe he has changed, but he hasn’t earned it. even if you’re on your good boy behavior the entire game, two weeks doesn’t erase a lifetime of drug abuse and its consequences. i think jean has every right to be pissed and i actually feel so bad for him in the good ending. obv he wants what’s best for harry but imagine being in his position. it’s that idea of “you were always capable of change, i just wasn’t worth changing for”
