It started a month ago while Uncle Tim was busy arranging the chairs at the diner, his wife Aunt Martha screamed: “Honey! Your eyes!” Lo and behold, his eyes vanished in its sockets. “But dear, I can still see.” A few days later, while feeling around the counter, his teeth and tongue were missing. But he could still bite and taste. A week later, his fingers started disappearing leaving him with claw like hands. But he could still grab things. No one knew what was happening, but just today his wife noticed that his knees were gone! He would have fallen to the ground, but he was inexplicably still standing up, as if the knees were still there, only invisible. How long will it take until Uncle Tim becomes entirely transparent? On the third and final day of our stay in Hanoi, we opted for a half day tour of the city. This time we were happy that our tourguide was punctual and we were first to be on the bus. But not for the other tourists who were part of the group. Some came in late, some were not in the pick-up point and one cancelled without notice! Oh well, this drawing was the view from the bus window as we waited. For some reason, the tour bus that was supposed to take us to Ha Long Bay was taking a long time to arrive. We also had to walk from our place to another pick-up point. I did this drawing of the corner shop while waiting but the bus arrived before I finished it. Had to fill in the details later in the bus. “Mga Munting Sapatero” is one of my contributions to the Project Hulmahan benefit art show. It depicts the story of a little girl whose father, a hardworking shoemaker was forced to close shop. Her dreams were always haunted by a greedy Alupihan (“Centipede”) whose number of feet one can never seem to count, because every night he seems to grow more and more feet. Consequently, the Alupihan always required more and more shoes to wear. So, he steals every shoe he can find – including every shoe her father made for her. Every morning upon waking, she cries to her father. But her father would always tell her not to worry and have faith. What miracle is in store for them? “Mga Munting Sapatero” is done in acrylic on shoe last and resin-coated.
