i’ve picked this scene to death and i will continue to do so until we get a scene between these two that’s even more heartbreaking and mind-screwy than this, but today the thing i want to talk about is the ridiculously long pause between the two lines in the sixth gif.
there’s also a pretty nice pause between gifs five and six, during which eobard is not only grinning smugly to himself but also appears to be struggling for words. he’s looking at cisco pretty steadily between the two lines in the sixth gif, but the pause is still way too long for him to have already decided what to say. it seems pretty obvious to me that he was trying to figure out how best to phrase this revelation, but that does beg the question of why it was so hard for him to decide how to put this.
what ways did he come up with and discard?
“you became a metahuman” isn’t quite true, if we assume that cisco actually got his powers after he died in the alternate timeline.
“you became vibe,” also not technically true, and also gives away too much. as long as eobard still has information that cisco doesn’t, he’s holding some of the cards.
“i made you a superhero,” seems to make sense, given what we know from his conversation with barry; he credits himself with the creation of the flash, so it tracks that he would also give himself credit for cisco’s powers.
“i created vibe,” also gives away too much, even though it’s a more direct parallel to the line he gives barry, but this is about cisco, not vibe.
the line he actually chooses to say, “you were affected too,” is an interesting choice. it gives nothing away, tells cisco nothing about his powers or his future, keeps him hanging on what eobard is going to say next. it also takes the implied agency out of eobard’s hands, because he’s controlled cisco’s life enough that he knows cisco must be feeling pretty powerless right now. when cisco flat out refuses to believe him then he gives up more information, letting cisco know just how much eobard could tell him if he chose, but still only giving the briefest overview necessary for comfort. eobard chooses all of his words very carefully in this scene, and it’s very telling of just how important it was for cisco to take away from this conversation everything eobard needed him to take.
