Shadow Crystals are the power of "lost dreams." In order, the things that they show us (besides "the Light World, from the Dark World") are:

a world where Kris doesn't exist, in Chapter One, where they're at their most miserable and resigned;

a Susie who hates Kris, in Chapter Two;

a Noelle who's still close to Kris, enough to whisper to them, in Chapter Four;

a Toriel who's "holding someone else" – pointedly in the Chapter Five segment where Toriel is thinking about going to get Asriel early, on the heels of her moving on to a new possible relationship;

a version of the Festival where Susie doesn't get to go, in Chapter Five, where Kris is stuck on the outside of Susie and Noelle's date, watching them both get further away;

a Noelle, smiling at Kris with arms full of flowers, in a) the Chapter where Susie decides Noelle needs to be let in on the secret and b) the Dark World where every mention of Noelle is about romance and her romantic interest in Susie – a version of the Flower Kingdom where Noelle was the one with Kris, maybe?

Whose dreams are these? A world where Kris doesn't exist; a world where Susie still hates Kris; a world where Noelle is closest to Kris; a world where Toriel has "someone else" rather than Kris; a world where Susie is still the outsider; a world where Noelle is still smiling at Kris. Did Kris fantasize about these things, once upon a time? Are these fantasies they've given up on?
