I continue to be slightly confused about who the "boys" consist of.

There were 10 of them in the first book but only 8 named (7, if we don't count Tuffnut Jr. being included in the character illustration page to be proof).

Now there are 12. How or where 2 extra children came to be I don't know, but now I have 10 names and 12 boys so. Fuck knows who these bonus lads are but they sure are there :/

I think I've hit my first continuity error? HTCADC is set at the end of winter/beginning of spring which I've called the tail end of February. The events of HTSD was 2 months ago, so December. 6 months ago from Febraury was the last time the seas weren't frozen, so August... but then how are the Hooligans & Bog Burglars able to sail to Fort Sinister?

Have I bungled this already or is it genuinely a continuity error?

i'm fairly sure that Valhallarama's age is never going to be revealed but its interesting to look at the clues we've got

she is 20 years older than tantrum o'ugerly (tantrum is considered a little old for Hiccup to be betrothed to)

her fortune was read by Excellinor when she was 7 (Excellinor has been in a tree for 20 years)

Stoick was 30 when Hiccup was born (so she's potentially in a similar ballpark)

Has Hiccup been outcast for 3 months, 6 months, 8 months or a year? I don’t know and clearly neither does Cressida!

Whichever one is canon is still wrong because Hiccup is still miraculously 13 when he was outcast in January and his birthday is February.

Supposedly we’re in winter though which doesn’t really match any of the proposed time skips with maybe the exception of a full year skip landing us in January again. But seeing as we’re on book 10 of 12 and Hiccup is meant to be 13 but actually really should be 14 the chances that I’ll skew his age way out of proportion by picking that date are quite high!

Hiccup turns 14 on Feb 29

Gobber, baggybum & fishlegs etc are made slaves in may

Hiccup somehow finds shelter with another clan until July

The Red Rage tracks down his general whereabouts in October

Jewel begins in January of the year he turns 15 (possibly December of the previous year?)

If he’s too old next book then fuck it I guess. My canon now I am the captain of this boat.

I don't want this attached to the timeline because I don't like to yuck anyone's yum, and the timeline is a positive thing. But I do want to complain about How to Ride a Dragon's Storm... It sucks???

like all the books have to do the same song and dance at the beginning, I get that, it's a childrens book not necessarily read in order so you have to introduce the entire premise for every book. annoying but understandable. this is a children's series I won't pick that apart too badly.

HOWEVER. nothing happened in this book that was worth dedicating an entire book to... we've already done fights with massive monsters, we've already seen that slavery exists in the archipelago, there's already been several big battles at sea. we already know america exists..

there's only 3 things of note that happen:

Norbert the Nutjob dies

Fishlegs learns to swim

Hiccup gets the slavemark

Norbert's death changes nothing. we were already on bad terms with the Hysterics, now theres just less of them and we're still on bad terms with them.

the relationship with the Murderous tribe doesn't change, Madguts is still a kind of tentative ally that we're tiptoeing around.

Fishlegs' swimming barely affects the plot as is. he's been in the water loads of times and not drowned.

Hiccup getting the slavemark was the only interesting thing that happened and yet it didn't affect the plot at all. It's just a setup (presumably??) for later books.

like idk maybe i'm being picky but in a book series where the circumstances and relationships reset themselves for each books (snotlout always sucks, stoick is always has an arc about appreciating his son, hiccup is always the underdog despite repeatedly saving everyones lives etc etc) I think there at least needs to be some decent worldbuilding per book?? HTSD at least did the romans and the bog burglars. AHGTDD addressed the library and Hiccup 2. HTTADT built up Valhallarama's past. HTBAP brought in Alvin who is hilarious and set up Grimbeard the Ghastly. HTTYD set up the entire premise & relationships. HTCADC did the Hysterics and America already. what did HTRADS even bring to the table that was new??

eh. I'm definitley overreacting to this a bit, hopefully the series picks up now? I'm just kinda disappointed with this entry...
