it only makes sense. the roommate kinda hates whoever this mystery ex is because what kind of asshole breaks up with someone during the new years? with avery of all people

then suddenly after a few weeks avery suspiciously Lights Up again, and after some prying (because the roommate is nosy but also wants to know avery is doing Okay) avery starts sheepishly telling them 'things are going well with derek!' (read: turns out he's alive and recovering)

but the roommate doesn't know that so all they think is Oh this derek must be the asshole ex. And averys getting back together with him . roommate can only give avery a strained smile, nodding along to avery's excited rambling about their "progress" and how proud he is of derek and really he's not helping his case
