It's #studiotiptuesday! Provide references! For engineers and producers it's important to know the artist's vision and to deliver recordings that suits their taste. For an artist it's crucial to communicate your vision to the engineer or producer so you're on the same page throughout a project. I like to have 3-5 references of specific albums at the start of a new project. Otherwise your polka band might end up sounding like a punk band. Happy recording! #recording

It's #studiotiptuesday! This is a great way to fill out an acoustic instrument as well as make a stereo image without doubling up multiple takes. Plug the instrument into an amp, mic it up and also mic the instrument. Make sure the signals are in phase before you start tracking keepers. I have used this technique with mandolin, acoustic guitar, ganjo, and seen here, ukulele. Happy recording!

It's #studiotiptuesday! Experiment with distance. In a small home studio space, it can be difficult to get depth in your recordings. Try putting a large diaphragm condenser microphone in a neighboring room, down the hall, etc. The louder the source, the farther you can put the mic to add another texture. I have used this technique to get bigger drum sounds in a very small room.

It's #studiotiptuesday! Today's tip is simple. Record EVERYTHING. It seems fairly obvious but early on in my own recording experiences I would record only when trying to get the perfect take. The perfect take often happens when you're not trying. When recording with the expectation to get it exactly right, it is easy to play without emotion or nerves can get the best of you. A lot of times someone will say, "Let me practice it a few times." I always record the practice runs and often get the keeper takes while the pressure of getting it just right is off. Give it a try and don't let those perfect takes slip through the cracks! This picture was taken during a session with @adamkid in 2013.

It's #StudioTipTuesday! If you have tracked vocals in a home studio setting, it is likely you may have tried using a "reflection filter". Though these products can help eliminate unwanted room noise, what is behind the vocalist is also important. To get an even tighter sound, make a "T" shape with a boom stand and drape a blanket over it. This acts as a makeshift vocal booth (still using a reflection filter in the front) when placed behind the singer and will reduce the chance of phasing that can sometimes occur in untreated acoustic environments.

I am starting a “Studio Tip Tuesday” series in 2014.

Being the first Tuesday of the year, here is the first installment.

If you don’t have one already, try keeping a studio journal. It can help you learn the nuances of your environment. Especially in a home studio space, trial and error is key to figuring out what works and what doesn’t. I find it incredibly useful to look back at how certain sounds were achieved and how to recreate them. It may seem obvious but if nothing else, it might help you retain the information you’re documenting.
