Okay here is my very amateur deconstruction of Zeno’s outfit and gear setup in Resident Evil Requiem because the longer I look at it the more insane I become.
Because at first glance the design works REALLY well. White suit. Black gloves, dramatic coat, fancy gun, fentlemenly accessories. It feels very bond villiam like almost. Being a sharp contrast of form over function while still falling in the same lineage as Wesker’s aesthetic of wearing very uniform like clothes really "proper" almost restrictive . But then you actually start LOOKING at the details and the entire image starts collapsing in on itself. Because almost nothing about this setup actually feels functional, personal, or even properly worn. It feels like Zeno has not spend a single thought on what hes actually wearing. (And I think he probably hasn't)
OUTFIT / ACCESSORIES
The white suit is the first thing that starts feeling off. Not only because it directly contrasts Weskers color palette. It's also impossible to keep clean while you...idk scout through a desolate city ruin landscape. Also it’s supposedly this immaculate custom-tailored outfit and yet it hangs on him strangely loosely.
The fabric bags around the knees, the pant legs seem slightly too long, and the overall fit lacks the sharp precision you’d expect from someone presented this carefully.Honestly it looks like the suit was made with somebody taller and broader in mind.(Wesker supposedly?)
And then there’s the black coat draped over his shoulders. That silhouette is even MORE overtly Wesker-coded except on Zeno it doesn’t read powerful, it reads heavy. He literally carries his origins, his progenitor, his “parent,” the role he was made to imitate, on his shoulders. And his posture reflects that too. He’s subtly hunched forward almost constantly, like the outfit itself weighs him down. Also for a person in active operation/combat, this clothing gives him no freedom to move either. Visually and physically it restricts him. The entire design is literally and figuratively to big for him and weighing him down.
Then the accessories start getting weird. The collar decoration initially reads "high class/expensive salon wear", but historically accessories like that derive from military gorgets, wich in themselves are remnants of plate armor and in military context a symbols of rank, service, and station. In essence they are a sign of servitude. They’re associated with soldiers, servants, conductors, butlers. Roles where presentation and obedience matter. And the weirdest part?
Zeno wears it WRONG!
He wears it underneath his tie even though insignia like that are meant to remain visible. His tie doesn’t even sit flat because of it. Then there’s the chain attached to his jacket. Wich reads as fancy watch chain first. Except it’s not functioning like a normal watch chain/albert chain (yes they are really called that but for my sanities sake Im choosing to ignore that for now) because it attaches to absolutely nothing. No watch, no visible purpose, it just hangs there. And every individual link is actually a small diamond which means this was 100% intentionally placed on him. Which somehow makes it even stranger. Also it's attached to the suit jacket instead of the vest where a watch chain would traditionally be worn discreetly. It almost resembles an absurdly stylized military lanyard instead. Another symbol associated with military rank and distinction. And visually both the collar ornament and the chain literally frame Zeno as being “in chains.”
Then there’s the earring. Probably the most blatant example in the entire design. It doesn’t open. It’s fixed shut. And on the in-game model his ear actually appears scarred around the piercing like it tore before at some point.
Historically permanently worn earrings like that existed in a few contexts, sailors, carpenters, wore them as a symbol of status and mire practically to, if push came to shove being able to pay for their own funeral. There is another group though, enslaved people. As a clear marker of their status. And in Zeno’s case the symbolism becomes really uncomfortable because the earring is in the shape of Connections "logo" too. At that point it stops reading like jewelry and starts reading like branding. He is literally tagged like cattle.
The sunglasses tie into that too, they also are really fancy and look designer. Weskers always seemed way more practical. Also they’re actually prescription glasses with flip-down sun covers, meaning he canonically needs vision correction, a direct contrast to Wesker’s obsession with superiority and perfection. Zeno is flawed, maybe he was born with it, maybe the Virus messed with his eyes, in any case it's a blatant reminder that he's not living up to the expectations of his "perfect" blueprint. And despite the glasses having an actual practical feature, he never even uses the flip-up mechanism. Again, they exist more as part of the image than as functional gear. Like Wesker wore sunglasses so of course Zeno needs to wear sunglasses too.
And then the shoes. Dear god the shoes. I needed way to long to figure those out. At first glance they look like expensive dress shoes except the dust covers/spats are so oversized you can barely even reach the laces.Which just made me think, how the hell does Zeno even put these on? And then I noticed they have side zipper. Wich somehow made it worse.Because now they read neither tactical nor elegant but something weirdly in between. Tbh they mostly make me think of short ridding boots you're supposed to wear chaps over.
Even the color coordination falls apart once you spend way to much time staring at it. White suit, jet black leather accessories… and then a dark brown belt visible underneath a three-piece suit where the belt shouldn’t even really be visible in the first place.
I have so many questions. Did he dress himself? Because he genuinely looks like a child playing dress up in his dads expensive clothes. Or worse, somebody else dressed him. Like Connection handed him a role, an identity, an image to perform, and nobody ever bothered teaching him how to inhabit it as an actual person instead of a symbol. Others pointed out before the Zenos appereance resembles a high class escort in a way, because the clothes are fancy but very obviously not made for him.
Again I don't think this is bad design, I think it's a very intentional and great design of an outfit that's not supposed to work.
THE GUN
And then there’s his absolutely ridiculous gun. Ignoring how immensely OP that thing is, because this is still resident evil.Visually its cool as hell. Fancy, polished, dramatic silhouette, baroque engravings, exactly the kind of weapon you’d expect an “elegant superhuman antagonist” to carry. And then you realize what it actually IS.
It’s a break-action single-shot pistol with an absurdly oversized barrel. Which is a genuinely insane choice for active combat. Weapons like that are generally associated with hunting, precision shooting, Olympic shooting etc. Situations where careful, measured accuracy matters more than speed. It only holds a single round. Every shot requires Zeno to manual reload.
Slow manual reloading. (Even with the superhuman speed there is only so much strain you can put on the mechanism) After every single round. Which makes the entire thing bizarrely impractical for somebody constantly entering violent close-quarters combat. It halfway makes sense during the B.S.A.A. squad scene because there he’s effectively “hunting” people like game. But then he starts using it against Leon and the logic immediately collapses again because he’s WAY too close for the weapon’s supposed role.
At one point he literally has the gun pointed directly at Leon’s head and the thing ISN’T EVEN COCKED. He uses it more like an intimidation prop than an actual ready firearm. And then instead of firing it he straight up pistol-whips Leon with it. Which is ALSO insane because this thing is presented like a highly specialized expensive precision firearm. You generally do not want to smash someone in the face with a gun like that unless you actively want to risk damaging it. Especially not with the amount of force Zeno uses. And honestly that’s what keeps standing out to me.
Zeno himself is deadlier than the gun. He’s faster than it. More efficient than it. More lethal than it. Whenever he actually gets serious he defaults back to using his own body instead. It's more somebody decided he needed a dramatic signature weapon because it fit the image they wanted him to project. And THEN...he doesn’t even have a holster for it.He just stores this gigantic ornate hand cannon somewhere inside the already absurdly heavy coat draped over his shoulders.
Where??? How??? Does he have to fish around inside his own pockets every time he wants to pull the thing out???
The whole setup somehow manages to feel both hyper-curated and deeply impractical at the same time.
OTHER DETAILS
There are also just small details that just tie into all that, although I might be overinterpreting here. (Or with this whole post idk)
Like the fact Zeno is very obviously a smoker, honestly probably a chain smoker. Which already works as a direct contrast to Wesker because Wesker’s entire self-image revolved around superiority and bodily perfection. Wesker would NEVER willingly damage his own body like that. Zeno very obviously does. And the game frames smoking less as “cool villain aesthetic” save for the first reveal and more as real stress management. The clearest example is when he talks to Grace about the clones. That conversation visibly gets under his skin and immediately afterward he reaches for a cigarette. And you know what? He dosent even have his own damn lighter, not even a cheap one. Instead he repeatedly uses Victor’s lighter, the lighter belonging to the geneticist behind the institution that suposedly lead to his creation in the first place. A guy he has a chemistry with that I can only describe as divorced without ever being married. And that lighter is engraved with the care centers symbol. (Why does Victor have such a fancy personalised lighter, no one knows maybe he's really into aromatic candles)
The symbolism there is so aggressively tragic it almost becomes comedic again. Even Zenos cigarettes are outwardly dependent. He cannot even perform a private stress habit without using their object. THEIR fire. And once you notice that the entire design starts feeling deeply unsettling because what exactly DOES Zeno own? The suit doesn’t fit him properly. The accessories read like symbols of service and ownership. The gun feels selected for aesthetics over practicality. Even the lighter isn’t his.
Because at his core Zeno has never been allowed to be his own person, honestly he's not really been allowed to be a person at all.

#1 baby Zeno headcanon:
He was an absolute hellion. Stubborn, defiant, and very moody, at least compared to his clone brothers and sisters. He back-talked, acted like smarty pants, mumbled petty insults under his breath and even refused to go on procedures. Of course, his medical autonomy wasn’t ever considered, but he at least tried to establish boundaries, as far as his boyish and meek voice allowed to.
