“Yeah?” He replied honestly. Nick could rest anywhere. His drug habit had allowed that to be, used to squatting in all sorts of places, but it was still a trait his sister considered enviable. “Wouldn’t be that comfy, but you could get used to it.” Nick nodded as he listened, though he hadn’t heard about tesserae since the Games. Then again, he wasn’t all that up to date on things. He had a habit of following along blindly if it didn’t directly concern him. “I dunno if people do that anymore, you know. Trade for that stuff. You may not need this at all. Have you, uh, just tried askin’? For like, some food? I’ve got some water, if you need.” Selling it generally was still on the table, but Nick’s curiosity had peaked, and he wanted to suss out the stash himself.Â
“Yeah, right, totally.” He’d heard stories here and there. Nick found them hard to remember. “Uh, no. Why, do I look like one?” He grinned, batting his eyelashes. “I’ve always thought I had a hero’s smile.”
"I'm not sure about that," Rey disagreed, unsure whether or not she believed him, but his statement still made her smile. "If you rolled over, you'd have a pipe stuck in your ear for the next week," she pointed out, gesturing to the metal tube beneath her feet. Her gaze lingered there as Nick corrected her assumptions, her confusion continuing to fester the more they conversed. "They don't? Then how does anyone get the supplies they need?" Surely they weren't handed out. There was a kindness and sense of community there that Rey couldn't even begin to understand, it defied every rule she'd ever known. In Ten, it was every man for himself. Nobody cared if you were hungry, or injured, or left behind -- that was your problem to solve. "Who would I even ask? And some water would be lovely, but I'm not sure you're interested in anything I have to offer in return." He didn't strike her as the building type.
"I can't disagree," Rey replied, laughing as his smile widened. "But if you're not a rebel, what brought you here?" Perhaps they had more in common than she'd initially thought.
Jesus immediately wondered why she’d needed these parts in particular, but figured that wasn’t too important just then. He could always ask later on. Instead, he focused on the latter part of her reply. “Alright then. Is that by choice, or by circumstance?”
Before contemplating her answer, Rey glanced at the man in confusion, wondering why he'd even questioned it. Nobody ever asked her about herself. Nobody had ever cared enough to. "Circumstance," she answered honestly, but avoided pairing it with an explanation. She was unsure how she felt about the vulnerability it inspired.
