Have you heard of the importance of omega 3 essential fatty acids? The 'essential' fatty acids (EFAs) were given their name when researchers found that they were essential to normal growth in young children and animals. The omega 3 essential fatty acids break down into 3 groups; short chain (ALA), medium chain and long chain (DHA & EPA). Long chain EFAs are very difficult to find in vegan foods. A dietary lack of long-chain omega 3 essential fatty acids (DHA & EPA) in our brain tissue may lead to neurological imbalance and potentially depression. A healthy body can convert short chain omega 3s (ALA) into long chain omegas (DHA) at a rate of about 3-5%. However, it does this in competition with the omega 6's also trying to be converted. The most effective way for the body to receive long chain omega 3s is directly from food that hosts omegas 3 and 6 in a ratio of 3:1. In the past, even vegans had resigned themselves to fish oil. Fish consumption also brings other things into consideration; sustainability, living conditions and dyes added to farmed fish and contamination including heavy metals. Until about age 5, heavy metals are able to cross the blood brain barrier and enter into young minds. What had been good enough for me until I was a momma, was no longer going to cut it. In my search, I found the most likely suspects; flax, chia & hemp all contain medium chain fatty acids. This is where it gets even better. The first research I found of combining medium chains to create long chains was in David Wolfe's book the Sunfood Diet Success System. He indicated (from his research) the combination of the medium chains of coconut with the medium chains of hemp, flax or chia, doubles the conversion ratio of medium-chain omega-3 to long-chain omega-3. Not only have we found a vegan option to craft long chains, it crafts them exponentially. That means we are forming fresh brain tissue at 6-10%! (up from 3-5%)
I am Rebeka Gentian. The work I do is a continued exploration and investigation of living together with our children, our food, our emotions and our planet in pursuit of delivering us to more life and more enjoyment of it! You can view my life in words, pictures and recipes at www.RebekaGentian.tumblr.com. This life and the posts there are also vibrant living proof of manifestation in action and the beauty that flows from pursuing truth in the face of all obstacles, resistance and presumed limitations. It is a life of choosing love in the face of fear so often that we no longer face fear. This Path began for me in January of 2003; when I woke up blind in rural Montana. Everything in my life changed. I rejected the truth of others. I fired doctors. I stood up for myself. I took personal responsibility for my health. This is not medical advice and may not be the path for everyone. For me, I had nothing left to lose. It didn't start from a place of empowerment. It started from a place of rage. You can start anywhere.
